Did my 12th in Humanities and BSc in Geography in India (local university - Assam), finished my MSc in Geo-information Science in the Netherlands and am about to start my PhD in Engineering Geology in Italy. The IIT non IIT debate is slowly getting irrelevant tbh nowadays. Lots of students from tier 2 and tier 3 institutes are getting really good jobs in top software firms nowadays. A few years back you could say that non IITians were at a disadvantage, but with so much resources related to coding today , honestly anybody can earn the big bucks nowadays.

Probably a long post, but I am sure will help anyone who's lost at the moment.
There are many students jinke furthur studies ki capability zyada hoti nhi hain, new theories seekhne ki capacity rehti nhi hain. It is hard to accept for some, but woh shuru ke 2-3 semesters gives the premonition. I was one of them.
I passed my 10th in 2008, flunked my 12th due to hypothyroidism and ladkiyo ka nasha, got into a 3rd grade Diploma college in 2011, got out in 2014. Was never a good student, always scored a bit less than 80%, though I studied in CBSE all through my life.
Couldn't get into B.Tech, even a Tier 3. Loan le sakta tha, but was sure it would've been a huge mistake. Got with school friends on FB. By then, many of them had been into IIMA, some were into their doctorals at Harvard. Bade papa's sons was one in European Central Bank, the other in Goldman Sachs in London as an Analyst. Chacha's son was into a NIT. Padosi ka ladka was well into IIMB. Even the guy who never got into 11th was in merchant navy, working his way through the ranks. He will be a Chief Engineer in 10 or so years from now. I was jobless, skill-less. Depressed. At age 23.
By then I knew that jobs mein security hain nhi aur expecting a linear growth is useless. But I needed skills. Joined a company in Pune as a trainee, with a 13k per month stipend. 12-13 hrs ki shifts. Spent 2 years, got a job as a JE over there itself. Salary was 25k a month. Khub kaam seekha. Got into the stock market, started selling covered calls and hedged credit spreads. 3 more years passed, applied for a site supervisor post in France, was selected through an online interview. The company paid for my airfare, visa, medical, insurance, a 6 month certification course in industrial safety in transmission & distribution, a driving licence and living expenses as well. Salary was €4.9k a month post taxes, which I saved almost entirely. I know, not much over there, but for me it was huge. Itna to mere company mein M.Tech kiye huye Deputy General Managers ke baap pardadao ki bhi nhi hoti ek saath milaake.
What was strange was that skills were valued more over there, than degrees. There were many secondary school pass technicians from India/Bangladesh/countries like Poland who got much more than me owing to their experience and their ability to do OT. I came to know of many Indians/Spanish/South American people who weren't even 8th pass, working odd jobs in warehouses/hotels/commercial hmv driving etc, but saved much over there than most Tier2 grads make over here.
Btw, also came to know of some bankers in BNP who lived out of their cars to save money. What an ingenious idea, isn't it? 😂
Owing to my friendly nature, made some 60-65 year old friends over there who owned chains of restaurants, one such being in Switzerland.
Think about the pressure our families put us in exactly after getting a job- buy a house, get a car, get married. Nothing like that over there. Savings ki culture India se udd ja rhi hain and log 1.5-2 lakh per month ki naukri kha mili, kharid lete hain 2 cr ka 1000ft2 flat on a 30 year adjustable. 😣 Aur usse rent pe chadhao to 30k se zyada milti nhi even in places like Juhu/Malad.
Also, there wasn't any khichpich about working over-time, for everyone was well paid. In the company that I worked in India, there were people who'd get offended with me working overtime. Although my immediate boss and his bosses were doing shifts as long as mine. I will never forget the amount of motivation their hard work gave me. 56/57 ki age, but they worked no less than I did. For a workaholic, leaving an unfinished job to be taken care of tomorrow is unacceptable. And so it was for me. Ek saath sutta break lete thay. 😉 On-site became a second home, the sound of huck-bolting guns and HT current passing through half insulated cables became music to my ears.
You are right. Koi class nhi hain wha pe about work, unlike here in India. Also there's no flashiness anywhere near to what we have here.
I started my holding company on a visit to Mayfair, London. Have good solid plans about it, currently raising funds for investing them in income generating real-estate worldwide.
Bought a 15 acre ranch on a visit to rural Nevada, repaired my toota-hua family flat here in India (which I didn't let my father mortgage for my studies). Finally could arrange for my sister's marriage.
Next contract is with the same company in France starting 2023. Getting better offers from others as well. Will apply for a PR in 5 years if everything goes right.
Looking back, I now understand why my bade papa's sons decided to do their undergrads & postgrads from outside India. There was a time when our relatives used to scoff at them, like they have betrayed their motherland. But now I understand.
Indian colleges are perhaps the worst when it comes to value for money. The coaching institutes are outright criminals, selling a dream to anyone that can be lured with. I can only imagine those over here who took loans to study/for coaching and couldn't get into good jobs/into good colleges.
Hardships teaches us resiliency. In 2014 before joining the trainee post, I was ready to sell tea from shop to shop in another city. Meine kisi bhi kaam ko chota smjha nhi. Nahi meine apne kismat ko kosa/parents ko sataya ke "you guys couldn't afford a good coaching/college for me, despite me having a good rank". I am immensely thankful to myself that I didn't agree to taking that loan. It'd have put me in a "ache marks lane hi honge warna tumhara family home will get repossessed" type mentality. And I didn't listen to those relatives that tried talking with a condescending tone to me.
I know now I am secured. Because I have the guts to face whatever darkness that lies ahead. By 31, signs of ageing starts showing prominently. I am thankful to my past self that I won't have to work till death.
A long post, but to whoever reads this- be frugal with your/your family's funds. No river flows forever, just don't add to it's drying up.

The opinions of relatives and society people matters more to the parents than the happiness of their son or daughter. No wonder the youth wants to run away from all this bs and study/work abroad. It is not about being from IIT or not. It's about culture. In India, we don't have a culture of genuine learning, collaborative learning, innovation, etc but a culture of rat race (life long rat race), labeling, percentages, etc.
If any of you think that this labeling and rat race stops after getting into IITs/IIMs/NITs other good colleges, then think again. It NEVER stops. If you get into good colleges and didn't do well, and by well I mean 30-50 lakh ka package (which I guess is the only measure of success in our Society's eyes, earning loads of money), tab bhi log tana marenge. The person who couldn't get into tier 1 college earlier in life, will get resentful towards people from tier 1 colleges (although not all, but the majority). I will tell how bad the situation is. When I was in 9th standard, our Physics teacher once mentioned that he knows a guy who is from IIT+IIM. I said so what? What is so special about that? His reply was (that too in a very harsh tone), "Do you know the worth of such a guy? He will be earning at least 50 lakhs/annum". I wasn't very impressed by that answer because I personally know many small businessmen who earn way more than that. But what saddened me was, it still do, that why do we measure the success of a scholar through how much he/she earns.

But if you are from outside you really have to struggle hard to reach the position where IITians are and the percentage is low, say 100/3 crore as total undergraduate students in india is 3.06 crore. Totally agreed, majority of JEE Aspirants as well as Engineers in the rat race are because of peer pressure.
Instead they should speak up for themselves wherever they are now and choose an appropriate career path.
And also parents should be approachable.

as a current nitian i can bet on it ki yaha bhi halat kharab hai, no placements and no jobs despite the fact that your degree is from nit. Instead of focusing on skills recruiters heavily focus on the branch or specialisation of your majors (CSe)...the job market usually tends to be conservative in India and since I am from another branch rather than computer science there are no openings and at this point it makes no sense or real difference where you are graduating from. What matters is what branch of engineering you are specialising in..

With all due respect IIT Bombay is indeed a prestigious college and recognised in whole world. But it's rank is 150ish.
The highest any indian University have got is of IISc(around 90 or something) which is just brilliant in it's field.
The problem is Indian students have a mindset of getting job.
They just want hefty packages. If every student going in IITs utilises it's resources greatly it will surely get in tier of top universities.
This is where IISc beats IITs. They have a rigorous curriculum and they make their students use it Their resources wisely.
