HOW TO WIN A BIATHLON RELAY RACE or MASS START:
· Slow ski on the first stint (relay) or first lap, biathlon is opposite to cycling. When they're in a bunch biathletes are very slow, sometimes it's close to a minute.
· Make sure you shoot 100% on the first and second stints (relay) or laps. If you do not miss you will hold on to the leading bunch as long as you are half-competent when skiing. The leading bunch tends to last for 2 stints/laps, then it dissolves.
· The 3rd stint/lap is the key one, it is time to give your best. Give your best, the race will be a time trial for the final 3 laps or 2-and-a-half stints. Whether you're up front or behind it's highly likely you will be alone or just skiing with people that aren't your level (faster or slower).
· The final lap is the same for both relays and mass starts. If you're alone and think you can go to the finish line without getting company, it's time to keep the time trial attitude. Ride at your best pace, do not push more than what you would do in any time trial event. If you are with someone or might get company, slow yourself down, remember the profile of the skiing course and attack at your best moment, whether it is the final climb or the final straight.

I think, the first position is the worst to start for Mäkarainen. 2nd or last would be better
i think she do that knowing her team will don't win the relay so she do that to enjoy the race being faster than other and make finland shine until the end of first exchange :/

yeah of course but the others finland's athletes aren't enough fast to make that possible :s
I know what you mean, but the first athlete can just try to stay with the main group and it makes more sense to try to escape being the second athlete for example
