Toy companies back then were sort of fearless. A Kojak action figure seems like something that would probably fly with adult collectors stricken with nostalgia for a show they remembered fondly, but this? This was targeted at kids, who were absolutely not the target demographic for that show! Yet another fascinating look at the mad cap state of the toy industry from years past, bought to you with gusto in the powerful Plaid Stallions style! Excelsior! I miss Stan Lee.
In the UK, I had the blue suit version of this figure - my older brother brought it home for me one Leave from the Army. I loved it! I used to watch the show with my Dad (along with others like McCloud, McMillan & Wife, Columbo, The Streets of San Francisco, and F.B.I.). :)
I didn't have any Kojak toys or memorabilia...but my father was Kojak! No, he was not Telly Savalas, but my father was bald and wore a full suit in his white collar job for HUD (Housing & Urban Development). He even had a beautiful selection of fedoras to protect his bare scalp from the sun, so he looked even more the part! When "Kojak fever" was running rampant, co-workers would gently tease my father by leaving lollipops on his desk. I got a respectable amount of free candy that way. My father claimed that one time somebody stopped him on the street, honestly mistaking him for Savalas. Smiling, he turned to tip his hat and joked, "Sorry, no; but I wish I had his money!" Side by side the only commonalities were their lack of hair, general frame and similar wardrobe. My father's nose was considerably more slim than the actor's. But he took it in stride, having a laugh.
I was hoping the Norm MacDonald joke would make an appearance and you didn’t disappoint! My Dad loved Kojak. You’re right on the Power Records! Everyone I see is usually sealed, even the one I have! Lol!
Yes, I do have a handful of Kojak items- the action figure, an accessory set for the figure, and a pack of Monty Gum cards. I highly recommend seeing Telly Savalas' appearance on the "Alice" sitcom. Funny episode. I also find it strange that there is so much Kojak merchandise, considering the mature nature of the show. I remember lots of children watched the show back then, enjoying the lollipops and the "Who loves ya" catchphrase. I'd like to buy more Kojak merchandise on Ebay soon. There is something undeniably charming about it.
never been huge on cop shows but man i loved Kojak. savalas was just awesome in everything he was in -- from twilight zone to dirty dozen to horror express. i'd buy a new Mego of him off the shelf hands down
We recently had Kojak back on TV here during the UK lockdowns, and it was great to see the series again after all these years. I will admit that probably played a part in buying a mini - Corgi Kojak Buick recently, plus it looks good with Starsky and Hutch's car as well! Much appreciated to hear about other Kojak merchandise out there, thanks.
I do remember the car! When you wheeled it along, it made the gunman leaning out of the back window make a clicking noise as if he was shooting. And Kojak lollipops in sweet shops, I remember those! I'm from the UK by the way!
Lol! No, I was unaware a Kodak action figure actually existed until a year or so ago. It amuses me no end because my mom was a huge fan of the show (well, of Telly) watching it when it was on and later in syndication. I assume that if she'd been aware of it, she might have gotten one for me for Christmas. One Christmas, my sister and I between us got all the Sweathogs, so it was certainly possible. But I was much more of a science fiction and superhero kind of kid, and was pretty burnt out on police/detective shows by the late 70s. An interesting deep dive. Thank you.
8:55 Horror Express is movie that every monster fanatic must see! by the way as a kid I did have the Corgi Juniors Kojak car, and it was one of my favorites die cast toys.
LOVED! Kojak as a kid in the UK in the 70s. Had the Corgi car (though still have my Starsky and Hutch Ford Gran Torino). We would hit the sweet shop before primary school and buy Kojak pops. Who loves ya baby!!! Do remember a friend having the talking car also, which suspiciously had a similar mechanism to the Palitoy Dalrk, K9 and Trumpton Fire Engine "pugh, Pugh, Barney magrew, Cuthbert , Dibble, Grub". Lol!
Here in the UK I never saw the figures but had the car from Corgi and a metal .38 special cap gun with a badge (probably a kojak knock off. I would have loved the figure to go with my Starsky and capt pegleg and capt hook figures.
Yesterday, as I stood with my kids looking at the Seinfeld and Queer Eye Lego sets, I thought: "Well, I'm pretty sure they made Kojak toys, so it's not that weird." They must've lingered for a while, because I was three months old when Kojak went off the air. And I didn't realize until now that those Kojak TV movies introduced the world to Andre Braugher, another of TV's greatest cops (in multiple roles).
DIG THE SHOW BABY!!! Because Who Love You Baby?? I saw the show Kojak as a kid in the 70's. As a person of 55(be 56 in Jan) I would just like to say one more thing. Just one more thing Sir,Oh just one more thing miss,Please... just one more thing. If you could. Did any company make a Columbo figuret back in the 70's. Because I would look high and low for that.
Watched the show with my dad every week! Reminded me of my grandpa with the sly grin. Never knew there were toys, but since I was 4-5 years young at the time, probably wouldn't have been on my parents' radar. I want all of them now😎
That pin-stripe costume reminds me of an old joke: "I asked my wife to go to Kochs and buy me a seersucker suit... unfortunately, she misremembered... and went to Sears."
Ong I did I the eBay search for a kojak doll now I want one and yes since bits December I will watch the kojak Christmas episode. Keep these videos coming Brian they are awesome
I remember seeing Kojak and the playset in the Christmas catalog. Never saw one in person. About 15 years ago I stumbled across the Kojak cigar on eBay for $5. I picked it up for my custom Mego Julius of the Planet of the Apes.
I'm intrigued by the SHADO badge on the front of the German MAD magazine. From the UK and, yes, KOJAK was very, very popular over here, circa 1975, 76. One of the biggest cop shows, along with Starsky & Hutch and The Sweeney.
While I share your incredulousness at who would have made this happen, I also kinda get it. They look pretty awesome.. Just watching this, I can see how I probably would have been at least a little interested as a kid. And I DEFINITELY want one as an adult collector now, haha. Also, hard disagree about the would-be cameo in Superman-- that would have been hysterical!!
Yes I had Theo in the blue suit. Already had his car from Corgi here in the UK. Kojack often felt Fonzie's collar as that was the only figure that I had in that scale that looked a little shady!
Don’t forget the annual! You said it yourself there’s always an annual in the UK. Presumably in the word search puzzle you had to find, Heroin, drug bust and pimp.
No Kojak in my toy box, but you did jog my memory about the Emergency! figures, which my brother and I did have (Johnny and Roy, anyway). I'd love to see a feature on that line.
It seems odd there are power records stories for Kojak. This reminds me of Kenner's rated R movie toy lines. At least as far as kids' interests based off films or shows they might not see. Were adults listening to the Kojak records. Like a radio show? I mention this but as a dinky one i loved Hillstreet Blues.
I never knew about this figure but did see it at a toy show once and thought it was a custom. I do miss companies making figures of obscure properties as they always added a fun element to my action figure battles as a kid. Despite this, I found I just couldn't incorporate the Fonz into my superhero and ape battles. Maybe Kojak would have fared better.
Love your videos. Would love to see video of redressing Star Trek figures. Example comes to mind of Kirk in that blue suit is what he wore in a piece of the action. So many possibilities.
Telly Savalas, man people forget him. Let’s face it as far as popular culture. No one remembers him. However that man was fantastic! Shows you the shelf life. Like look at Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, (older then telly, I know) all gone, out of culture and 90% of people never heard of em. Bogart, maybe Casablanca is his only saving grace that keeps him relevant in maybe a college course or showing up on a best movies list. So many Actors, James Cagney when does anyone say that name. Lol I put Telly in a higher caliber class. But I was on a rant. Lol 😆. Nice video. Ps loved Telly in Kelly’s Heroes. The Clint Eastwood WW2 action/comedy film. You can’t be cooler then Telly Savalas for his time and space in fame.
I was familiar with the show and I'm sure I watched a few episodes. And I remember seeing the book & record set, but alas I didn't own it. Or any of the other merchandise either. Now I kinda wish I had.
Yeah Kojak toys=1970s goodness I'm amazed what was made into toys back in the day....a certain R rated movie about an ill fated space mining mission comes to mind....
I didn’t have any Kodak stuff as a kid but I do have a Mask from Target called lollipop man & I have the Corgi junior version of his Buick now. My grandfather was a cop so my grandparents watched the show religiously.
Well, At least they put a little more effort into this other than just recycling the Uncle Fester heads used for the Addams Family toys I'm sure! Of course, if they had a lollipop accessory I'm sure the plastic FOR THAT would have turned an "interesting" puke or brown color by now!
The novelty of a honest to god figure of the actor is alone worth tracking one down.
Toy companies back then were sort of fearless. I think Kids watched a lot more cop shows back then. I used to watch Quincy a lot.

Good stuff Brick, these “how & why did this become a toy?” properties always fascinate me 🤔 Love Boat is another good example 😅
I'll be doing a Love Boat episode soon.

I think Telly Savalas would've made a great Lex Luthor.
Yes.
They based Luthor's appearance on Telly Savalas for the Superman Animated Series in the 90's.

Yeah, they were showing it on ITV4. I was surprised to discover that I didn't remember the final season theme tune.
I do remember the car! When you wheeled it along, it made the gunman leaning out of the back window make a clicking noise as if he was shooting. And Kojak lollipops in sweet shops, I remember those! I'm from the UK by the way!

Please do a video on the Rookies and Emergency! figures..
I totally had the Rookies ones and yeah remember the Waltons ones...omfg
Man it would be cool if we got a new MEGO of this charater. Or a Executive.
I remember Ving Ring played KOJAK in an updated (yet short lived) series several years ago.
Yeah, it didn't work.
I remember watching the TV show. But do not remember the toys or merchandise. Thanks for sharing Brother 😀 👍 ♥️ 🎉🎉👏👏🎉🎉💯
Really appreciate it sir, glad you enjoyed it!
Very cool! I have that Kojak LP....and yes, still sealed. LOL
I opened mine, so there is one less sealed copy in the world. ;)
8:55 Horror Express is movie that every monster fanatic must see! by the way as a kid I did have the Corgi Juniors Kojak car, and it was one of my favorites die cast toys.
I love Horror Express, it's a perfect film in some regards.
I laughed like a maniac at the "Foot Locker" bit. Top notch!
Thanks!
Who loves ya baby!
I love the vintage 8 in Kojak retro action figure and i want him in my collection.
Even my parents were too young for Kojack's target demographic when this show aired.
Awesome thanks for taking me back in time, I saw reruns on tv , but didn't have any toy's back then, but always saw them in different shops 😀👍🏽
Happy to hear you enjoyed it.
I would turn that Kojak figure into the character from Horror Express. I love that movie & Cushing & Lee.
It's a fantastic film.

You made a dull toy line interesting! 9:49 minutes of fun. The Kojak figure escaped me but I did steal his shaved head look.
A lot of guys took that look, it's pretty commonplace today.

Aw thank you so much.
Didn't expect that surprise Bill Duke.
Weird right? Apparently he hates this appearance.
Kojak was a great gritty 70s era detective show . No doubt one of my favorites along with Cannon and The Streets of San Francisco .
Whenever I hear Kojak i think of the Phil Hartman SNL skit .. the players with your self club … we’re talking 2 ply baby !!
me too. players never have to rewind!

Getting that an awful lot.
I love Kojak. I have the doll and a few corgi cars in the toy room.
Very cool!
Great episode. Had the car back when I was 7 or so in Edinburgh so likely a 1978 uk re-release. Now i need to go back and rewatch the TV shows.
Who loves ya baby? I had the Kojak corgi car. It went with all my other police vehicles including Starsky’s Grand Torino. :D
I'm going to get a ton of these.
I remember having the car in two sizes. A small hot wheels size one and the corgi bigger size. Not as good as the Starsky and Hutch.
I forgot to mention the Corgi Jr.
As a toddler, I confused Kodak with "Kolchek", another detective show.
Very interesting. Didn’t know there was a kojak action figure.
Yeah, it's a bit obscure.
Yes I had Theo in the blue suit. Already had his car from Corgi here in the UK. Kojack often felt Fonzie's collar as that was the only figure that I had in that scale that looked a little shady!

amazing video. You'd be my top pick for time machine travel back to stock up on rare 70's toys :)
That's a great compliment, I've got my bags packed when you invent one.
