Something people may not be aware of is when using a compass to navigate while traveling the back country is get out of the vehicle. All of the metal and electronics in most vehicles have an effect on a compass. To get an accurate reading on your compass you need to exit your vehicle and step away from it. There are some vehicles that for whatever reason don’t have an effect on a compass. The only way to know for certain is to take readings both in and out of your vehicle multiple times in multiple places. As always it’s better to be safe than sorry.
    Cheers mate and happy trails

Lots of good points Jason. I have always used a compass and paper maps. Started using maps when I was a kid. Also have a stack of topographic maps from the USGS. Handy!

Give Gaia a shot sometime. Really great app, and really good customer service if you ever need it. I’m sold on them.

Out east there isn’t much in the way of public land so this information is theoretical for me. That said, I’m hoping to spend this summer further west so this is a great starting point in finding primitive camping when the time comes. Thanks!

Cool tips Jason! And here I was getting ready to say "Yeah, but on the east coast...", thanks for the tip on Caltopo. That's a new one for me. A resource for here in Pennsylvania is Purple Lizard Maps. They have some very awesome maps of several State Forests here in Pennsylvania with details on trails, roads, some history, and tidbits that most people never know. Besides, a good paper map doesn't need cell service, GPS, or electricity.

Usgs (US Geological Survey) mapping, for hard copy out of cell signal delorme and/or benchmark each state is about $20 or so on amazon. Also, you can get area specific maps and regs at the individual unit websites. State and national forests and blm offices.

There are a number of great sources for learning navigation. Once learned, it will open up a new world.
Start slowly, by getting a good map of familiar locations, then begin the process of visualizing how a map is just an overhead view.
Then, add in a compass for orientation and practice! Major landmarks will soon become evident.

Good info. I have a collection of almost all the national forest maps for Oregon and think they are an amazing tool. Although some are definitely better than others. Most of
The cascades are mapped in great detail but the central Oregon districts leave much to be desired.

Thx again for another dose of useful info. I've been using a paid app called US Topo Maps for a while. I loved it at first, but your right some of these apps are a real pain when it comes to transferring waypoints from phone to PC. Honestly I think it's gotten worse in the last couple months. Also Google Earth on the phone is not the same as on the PC, I still haven't found an easy way to swap waypoints back and forth.

If your in a tight spot in a new town, always head for the railroad tracks.
Its under federal law but usually the local cops don't patrol it and you can get atleast a few days rest with litte or no interruptions.
However, if you do see others there. Dont be friendly. Keep to yourself and be quietly stern about it. If your soft, you'll get stolen from. Stay a potential threat and they'll keep their distance.

Good informative video. Google earth is fine for a general overview. I use it more to rule out areas, but have located a few gems. In the last few years it seems that a lot of information is being left off of paper maps. I have to use a combination of Green Trails, The Atlas and Gazzeter for Washington and Oregon. and the basic Forest service maps to get an accurate view of an area. I would like to get a hold of a set of the Ranger maps that Government agencies use.

One thing that I would like to ask: How about bears and wolves ?
I am sure you take into consideration that there are forests and mountains where bears and/or wolves
are still present. Being myself somebody who is absolutely ignorant about camping I would be
scared to death to end in such geographical locations. But you are a "pro", how do you manage ?

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors  6 років тому +1

They are not that big of an issue here in Oregon, we do have them but encounters are far and few between.

another great video, I am a little older than you and tend to use hard maps, other people, and just hard exploring to find good camping sites. I start with USFS or BLM maps. often will call local offices and talk to resource staff. They have been great. Here is a tip for a spot that will yield great photos of Cascades. N 44 05.952 W 121 32.457 Not far out of town and roads could be worse. It is my go to spot when to check out wild fires when burning near my cabin.

After spending 20 years in the US Army I cringe thinking that someone doesn’t know how to use a map and compass. Cell phone signals get lost. GPS and cell phones get lost, broken and run low on charge. No map, no compass, didn’t bother to learn? Yeah, good luck with that.
