  • We live in an era deeply shaped by secularism. Because secular ideas are at the heart of our culture, modern people tend to think in secular ways without realizing it-even the most well-meaning of us. How then do we live in, but not be of, a secular culture? We need to understand the enchanted, Sacramental way that the early Christians viewed the world, but we also need to understand secularism. To truly understand Christianity, we must unlearn an entire secular worldview and become participants in a sacramental worldview instead-a worldview that embraces reality as it truly is.
How do you explain the Sacramental life of the Church? To the early Christians-and to all ancient people-the idea that physical objects had spiritual power was very intuitive, whereas modern people tend to find this idea difficult, bizarre or even un-Christian.
Join Hank Hanegraaff and his guest Zac Porcu for a discussion on his book, A Journey to Reality: Sacramental Life in a Secular Age.
Topics discussed include: What is Christianity? (4:11); what are the mysteries of the Church? (6:49); what is religion? (10:53); Arche-a foreign unfamiliar word for God (13:05); the Trinity-why do we care about the Trinity? (16:30); what does it mean for God to be the ultimate reality? (18:32); what is the most important thing about Jesus? (20:28); what is the distinction between a secular and a sacramental of thinking? (22:29); what are the Sacraments? are they necessary in Christianity? (33:42); is baptism necessary for salvation? (38:23); the importance of the Eucharist (46:05); the seriousness of the Sacrament of Marriage (48:55); the role of the priesthood in the Sacramental life of the Church (52:06); Chrismation-what does it mean? (55:43); do Sacramental objects-such as relics-have spiritual power? (58:24); are we living in an enchanted world? (1:02:52); what makes the divine liturgy divine? (1:05:48); why is all liturgical time present time-proleptic (1:08:26); what does the liturgical cycle of the Church calendar reveal about reality? (1:10:32); the relationship between the Bible and Holy Tradition? (1:12:03); the truth about icons-what they reveal about the participatory nature of Christianity (1:16:10); how the existence of evil is an argument for the existence of God (1:20:49); is free will critical to the nature of Christianity? (1:23:42); why didn’t Jesus spare himself from death? (1:26:41); “He Who Is” (1:33:14); repentance is not a momentary act, but a lifelong process (1:34:17); the fallacy of neutrality when it comes to separations of religious belief and how we govern society-separation of Church and State (1:36:26); Journey to Reality-what does it take for us to become real? (1:41:06).

I absolutely enjoyed listening to this podcast. I think it beautifully summarizes what the Orthodox Christian faith is about and I will absolutely recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more.
My journey to Orthodoxy began last year in March during Lent (according to the Western liturgical calendar). I was actually looking for material on the CRI website related to fasting, when I stumbled upon podcasts where Hank, Metropolitan Yohannan, Nathan Jacobs, among a few others, were discussing topics like divine synergy and true worship from an Orthodox perspective. Being raised a Protestant, I was completely unfamiliar with some of the things that they discussed, but still they immediately resonated with my soul somehow. I wanted to know more! Before that I had already learned (and unlearned) so much by listening to the Bible Answer Man podcasts through the years, but when I accidentally learned about Hank's conversion to Eastern Orthodoxy and the controversy that it raised years ago, I became curious. Before that time, I knew nothing about the Orthodox Church, as there is no Orthodox Church presence in my country. Then, after a year of exploring, it came to a point where I was convinced that EO is the truth and I wanted to become Orthodox! The Lord brought me in touch with a nice and very knowledgeable priest from a Russian Church Outside Russia mission serving the Caribbean, and I joined his online catechumen class a month ago.
I thank God for His grace for bringing me home to the Eastern Orthodox Church. I am grateful for the incredible blessing that the CRI has been in my walk with Christ. I also bought a few books from the CRI bookstore and I will continue to do so and support the ministry. Hank Hanegraaff, you are by far my favorite Bible teacher. Thank your for the wonderful personalized birthday wishes - I've kept them all. 😊 May the grace of the Holy Trinity be with you, your family and the entire CRI crew.

Hank is enamored with ritual likened unto catholicism thru orthodoxy. Holy Communiion is a remembrance of Christ's ordeal. That is all. Those who believe that it's magical are ridiculous. It is not necessary for church service. I prefer services that don't waste time with this

@lindseycox-mcqueen5806 Nothing supernatural or sacramental connected to partaking in the Lord's Supper? Just a memory?
