I’m LOVING how this huge audience was singing right along with the band, and how you can actually hear the audience in all of the songs in this performance.
Freddie Mercury did have an amazing voice; even more so in this video since he had laryngitis the week before this concert. His doctor advised him to cancel his appearance and rest his voice, but he ignored the advice and went on to make rock history.
One thing you may not know is that this was the first time that any television was broadcast live across the world from two different countries simultaneously. For sure one of the best performances in rock history. Glad I saw it live on television. It’s still just as moving today as it was then when I was a young man. Some things that exist are just timeless.

You must keep in mind that the crowd (Live Aid) even didn't know they were coming, because Queen were added to the list when all the tickets were sold out. THIS WAS NOT A QUEEN CROWD BUT STILL THEY STOLE THE SHOW.

(Wembley and Philadelphia) and HAD THEM IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND. Queen's performance at Live Aid is voted MOST ICONIC festiwal moment in music history.

No, Queen was announced at a press conference a month before the concert and before tickets went on sale. See "Against All Odds" part 1 -- a documentary on Live Aid -- at the 54 minute mark, where Geldof named Queen and a number of other bands as being on the slate even though he hadn't confirmed it with Queen or a lot of the other bands/artists he named that day. But as far as the ticket-buying public was concerned, they were confirmed. It wasn't a Queen crowd in the sense that some people were buying tickets for the entirety of the show, some for other favorite bands, so not necessarily specifically for Queen, but they were not a last-minute addition. It was Lady Gaga's ex manager that started it by singing Radio Ga Ga when she walked in as some of her vocals reminded him of Freddie. There are numerous interviews

To hear him and to Watch him is to love him--I love seeing him so happy here, and all the times he was on stage! One of the few rock stars to stay out of drug and alcohol disasters, to stay close to his friends and family, to have so many god children and be so giving to so many people and I've never heard of any other celebrity who was described so many times as "kind, gentle, loving, intelligent, witty, hilarious, well educated, thoughtful, so much fun" besides the obviously gifted in all ways musical, (Brian calling him a "human metronome!" and all the wonderful musical and personal compliments opera singer Caballe said about Freddie after making the album with him.)

Michael was a huge fan & friend of Freddie's & Queen... He used to come hang out backstage with the band when they were touring in The States (in California). Michael said that Queen's Hot Space album was the inspiration for his Thriller album. (Hot Space came out just before Thriller.) Michael got a lot of inspiration from Freddie, including some of his iconic looks, like one metallic glove (which Freddie wore in the 70s) and his later military look (Freddie wore during Queen's last 1986 tour). It was actually Michael who convinced Queen to release "Another One Bites The Dust" as a single, and that song ended up being Queen's highest selling single at-the-time. ("Bohemian Rhapsody" has surpassed all these years later, as now being the most-streamed song... EVER.)
Michael & Freddie also recorded three songs together:
"THERE MUST BE MORE TO LIFE THAN THIS" (A ballad available here on YT.)
"STATE OF SHOCK"
(My FAV! They only recorded the demo, which IS available on YT... Then they had trouble getting back together to produce a "finished" version, so Michael also produced a version of the song w Mick Jagger... but the demo version with Freddie is BETTER!)
Also the song "Victory"... which is hidden away in a vault somewhere.😉

July 13, 1985, the Live Aid concert events were held in Philadelphia and London. Billed as the Global Jukebox, Live Aid served as an international fundraising platform designed to raise money and bring some relief to those suffering in Africa from the Ethiopian famine. The concerts took place simultaneously in London, England at Wembley Stadium and in Philadelphia at John F. Kennedy Stadium (now the site of the Wells Fargo Center). Orchestrated by Boomtown Rats lead singer Bob Geldof, the legendary promoter Bill Graham, as well as Larry Magid and Allen Spivak of Electric Factory Concerts in Philadelphia, the Live Aid concerts were star studded affairs with some of the biggest musical acts in the world. It is estimated that the concerts were watched by almost 2 billion people worldwide in 110 countries, and raised approximately $127 million for famine relief.

Nearly 2 billion watched on TV. Freddie's vocals were a bit off because he had a terrible throat infection, but still sounded great. Queen was crowned the best band that day. Freddie's stage presence was fantastic, and the band was great as always .

Between the two venues and the TV audience, close to 2 BILLION people watched this concert. That was around a third of the human population at the time.
You should review The Show Must Go On, and the live performance of Who Wants to Live Forever from their concert in Budapest...both songs are fabulous!
Love that Freddie strut! If you'll watch closely, especially during Radio Gaga, you'll see the security guys in yellow. Now who is security supposed to be watching? The crowd of course. Who are they watching? Freddie.
I loved that. And during that song, the press pack in front of the stage are looking at the audience clapping out as instructed by Freddie! They are amazed!
I love to see you youngsters having a 'come to Jesus' moment over this concert. You had to be there. I was. 80,000 in Wembley, and another 90 to 100,000 in Philadelphia's JFK Stadium in the USA, watching on a jumbo screen live. During the evening live stage acts started playing at JFK and we Brits swapped to watching the broadcast from there.

You were right about the Africa bit. Thee was a huge hunger disaster going on in large parts of Africa at the time. This concert,, featuring tons of bands doing 20 minute sets, was televised across the world. When the Wembley, Stadium in London ,portion ended, the Philadelphia, U.S.A. concert kicked off. A handful of artists played in both London and Philadelphia. It was a pretty special day..
It is unlikely that something like that will ever happen again. No one seems to care about the suffering other people go through, anymore.
The whole thing started when Bob Geldoff, of the Boomtown Rats, got a bunch of top U.K. Artists together and recorded "Do They Know It's Christmas?" Thy called themselves Band-Aid
Other countries followed suit. Canada put out a song called 'Tears Are Not Enough ' by the Northern Lights, featuring top Canadian talent like Gordion Lghtfoot, Anne Murray, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and others. The .U.S. put out 'We Are The World', by U.S.A. for Africa. Australia, and many European countries also did the same. Then Bob Geldoff organized the Live-Aid
concert in London and Philadelphia.. This was all back in the day when many of us cared about what happened to other people in the world.
It would be nice to see some of that sentiment come back today. It seems unlikely in the U.S., there are too many Evangelical Christians. Back in the 1980's,, many Christians followed the teachings of Christ., now they follow the teaching of Trump
Freddie was modest about his guitar skills. I would be too with Brian May in the band! But Brian said Freddie could play the guitar well and wrote Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Ogre Battle on the guitar. Brian was also impressed with how beautifully Freddie played the piano. The interview about this is in two different documentaries about Queen. Roger said they were all musical perfectionists which created fights then great songs and performances. Brian and Freddie were careful and clever about selecting songs for each performance. These guys knew each other since college. So they knew how to work together and were all supportive of one another and they knew Freddie would surprise the audience with something each concert. 😊

The second song you hear called 'Radio Gaga' is where Lady GaGa took her stage name from. It's about how all the stuff playing on the radio had become pure garbage.
The first song you hear called Bohemian Rhapsody is really over 6 minutes long, and was partly made that long in order to prevent it from being played on the radio: see fun fact #1
Queen was not originally scheduled to perform at this concert and were a last minute addition. Therefore none of these people had even bought their tickets to see Queen, yet every one of them knows every word to every song.
The song 'Hammer to Fall' is about Russia and it's oppression of it's people at the time.

I thought "hammer to fall" was a brave choice, b/c not well-known... but a fantastic rocker... the entire band was amazing here... especially Roger's vocals & Brian's guitar.. not to downplay JD on the bass.. he was the total anchor... there was an "encore" later on.. hope you see that, too "The World we Created" with just Freddie & Brian...

yes !the Hollywood did make a movie about him but the movie is not presented the fact of Freddie nor how the band were in the real life, the movie will have you miss understanding about all of them along with the whole history from the start & how their roles in the band among one another

I believe the stadium crowd was 72,000 people.
So fitting in the beginning because Freddy was so sick they didnt even think he would be able to perform, he kept losing his voice in the weeks before. Just shows what a true performers he was, and if I remember right, it wasnt long before this he told his band members that he had caught Hiv/Aids virus

Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 66 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person!
NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience.
NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?).
NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him.
SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW:
nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves!
LAST FUN FACT: His Lead Guitarist is playing on a Guitar he & his Father made. When he first starting to learn they were too poor to afford a high end guitar. So, they just made one! The included some “extras” that would normally have to be separate instruments to get all those features (think Concerts when you see guitarist changing Guitars depending on the Song….that’s why he didn’t)!

LEAD GUITARIST: Brian May’s family couldn’t afford a Guitar so he & his Dad made it from an old Cabinet. Because they were making it there are a lot of extra features that he wanted. It is truly a “one of a kind”!

Queen wrote every one of these songs. Queen rehearsed the set to insure all fit the 21 min each act had that day for entertaining the 72K in London's Wembley and the 90k plus simultaneously in America's JFK (I'm thinking). Then and now over 37 yrs later this Queen performance is deemed The Best concert ever. I agree Brief but domineering every moment, each of the 4 Queen musicians perfect individually and together. EDIT:I don't like the movie. It misrepresented Freddie. From the beginning his was an A-1 personality, a stellar, considerate team player/entertainer/musician/creator for the Queen family. They say we must remember it was a 'biopic' put together to entertain. I say Bah-Humbug.

This performance was only cut by less than a minute.
