  • Volosovo is the town in Leningrad Oblast (region) of Russia. It is located in 80km southwest from St Petersburg.
    The railway station of Volosovo is located on the railway from St Petersburg to Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia. There is only 75km to the west from Volosovo to the Russian-Estonian border and 280km to Tallinn.
    Volosovo is named after a pagan Slavic god of stock raising called Volos (aka Veles). In 9th-10th centuries, before the baptism of Old Russia into Christianity, there was a pagan temple on a territory of Volosovo where Slavic pagans prayed to Volos, the God of Stock Raising.
    In 18th-19th century the land of Volosovo village and an area around it used to be owned by Wrangels, the noble family with its roots from 13th century who came to Russia in the times of Peter The Great, supposedly from Denmark.
    Their Mansion used to be one of the fanciest around the mansions of the suburbs of St Petersburg, the capital of Russian Empire those days.
    In this video I search for the ruins of Wrangels mansion in Volosovo.
    Nowadays, Volosovo is the town of Leningrad region of Russia with a population of almost 12,000 residents.

    The Wrangels didn't come from Denmark, we descend from the German knights that settled the Baltic region. The Wrangels that moved to Russia came more specifically from one of the Swedish branches. When Sweden gained control of the Baltic region, the Baltic-German noble families were introduced at the House of Nobility in Stockholm and elevated to Counts af Salmis and af Sauss, and Barons of Adinal.

      True, Olaf von Wrangel, one of the Wrangel noble family was a member of the German parliament from 1965 to 1982. His grandfather was the German general mayor Nikolaus Alexander von Wrangel. Russian and German noble families share a long common history.

      I moved from St Petersburg to NYC like 30 years ago and still cant kill the habit of comparing some of the rural places in Russia to the ones in US... I once took a bus from NYC to Woodstock.... And as soon as you cross George Washington bridge... there are places that even a Russian finds disturbing :) (when you drive you dont really see them... but the bus makes stops off the highway )

      Yes, living in Seattle, I was thinking that too (lots of wooden houses in the Seattle suburbs, built in the 1940s by Scandinavian immigrants). Love all the wooden houses. Do you have conservation districts in Russian towns where very old houses can be protected and restored?

    Thanx for another nice video Sergey. It tweaked my curiosity, so I looked it up. One of Alaska's oldest towns is Wrangell, Alaska. We have many names left from our Russian era here in Alaska. The town of Wrangell was named after Ferdinand Wrangel, along with the Wrangell Narrows (near Petersburg, Alaska) and the Wrangell St. Elias mountains on our outter coast. Ferdinand Wrangel was the CEO of the Russian America fur trading company from 1830 to 1835 (Vitrus Bering was the first European to discover Alaska (in 1741). Russia owned "Alaska" for 126 years and sold it to the US for 7.2 million dollars in 1867. The US ownership surpassed those 126 years in 1993. Thanx again for a nice video.

    The settlement originating from a conglomerate of dashas, has retained its flavour throughout changing times. The openess and the absense of high structures makes Volosovo very attractive. I´m certain that residents value these traditions and will work to restore the manor, other representative structures, and conserve their easy-going lifestyle. The entire region is totally attractive.

      I know the guy who is recovering the whole village in Kaliningrad region of Russia. The private persons are also allowed restoring the historic buildings but the main problem that it is very expensive in terms of paperwork. You can’t just to rebuilt it the way you want or can. It must be done the way it used to be. And you need to attract an experts, historians, then pay for the plan of renovation, etc. etc. Before you can start just making a renovation itself.

    • @david_4739
      @david_4739 2 місяці тому +1

      That must be frustrating when you're trying to restore a place and you just want to get on with it. That place reminded me of an old local hall near me. I took an interest in it some years back. It would have made a great museum if it had been restored. The local council had been entrusted to look after it, but.like so many places around here, suddenly it was burned down and the land sold to a housing company. Now it is a big housing estate. That's what happens when criminals are in power. So maybe the rules there are a good thing all in all. Keep on making these wonderful videos Sergei. @@baklykovlive

    What a beautiful Mansion it once was............it would be nice if it could be restored back to its' original state? Maybe it can be rebuilt! It is hard to believe that this was still occupied as a Museum of sorts in the 1990's! Neglect and vandalism can certainly take its' toll.
    There must be photographs of how it once looked?
    If you could show those photographs it would enhance the history of this magnificent home and once the grand Palace it was in past years.

    QUESTION: IS THE LAND AND WRANGELS MANSION REMAINS FOR SALE AND HOW MUCH?

    • @baklykovlive
      @baklykovlive  2 місяці тому +6

      I don’t know exactly about this mansion and land but the government is selling a lot of objects like this to those who wants to recover them.
      But it’s not easy to find a buyer for it. Because you can’t just buy such a ruins and do whatever you want. You only can rebuild it exactly the way it used to be. For this you need to attract an experts, order a creation of the architectural plan of recovery, etc. etc. and only after it all will be confirmed you can start the renovations.
      And the thing is all that makes the price of dealing with all of that as expensive as it would be way cheaper just to construct exactly the same copy or just any other fancy house.
      So, that’s why or the government do it, or a really rich guys who are the fans of architecture.

      It is not how it works for the historic buildings like this which were recognized as an architectural and historical heritage. It have to be renovated (rebuild) based on what’s left instead of constructing a totally new copy even though that would be way cheaper and probably easier.
