You may recognize Monty Collins as the director in "Three Missing Links", or at the beginning of the first Columbia Stooge short, "Woman Haters". I see Bud Jamison was the original butler, and it sounds like Stanley Blystone in the role we normally equate with Vernon Dent. Listening to the dialogue, I get a feeling for what was originally written, and how much the Howards added to it, in "Crash Goes The Hash". (Moe voice) "They give you an appetite like a horse.", for example, is missing.
Just about everything in the movies was old hat on the live vaudeville circuit. Originally, it was thought that Abbott and Costello movies would bomb, but the nation went wild over the old skits......and still do!!!!
More like Moe does Monte's role and both Larry and Curly do Tom's role. Because keep in mind New News was released in 1937 (seven years before "Crash Goes The Hash" released in 1944) and the stooges short is a remake of the Collins and Kennedy short.
I like this version a lot better. The Stooges remake is okay, but it was rather made more economically. I have a photocopy of the original script (it was Vernon Dent's personal copy) that had some stuff not included in the actual short.

It's a great pleasure 2 watch these non-stooge comedies from Columbia.
