Hi, Turin! If you're reading this I want to let you know of a sort of "secret" way to extend your influence really fast. You actually saw it in the AoE4 official HRE cast they did a couple months ago. If you even START to lay down a building placement, even if you don't build it, you can sort of make a phantom influence extension without risking any villagers or buildings. For example at around 9:00 here you could have dropped a house between your lumber mill and archery range to give that tower access to E-repairs. In this particular instance you maybe didn't have enough wood to do so, but just for future reference. I saw you lose a keep in that massive 1-1/2 hr HRE v China match yesterday that could have been saved if you made phantom influence. I use it all the time as an HRE main, and it's saved my bacon so many times. Just something to keep in mind! give it a try on another match, you'll see what I'm talking about. Sometimes, if I'm flush with wood but can't risk building a TC in the middle of a map for a sacred sight, I'll even do a real jank line of invisible houses on my forward keep just for influence alone. Really fun!
Prelate first gives +40% to your whole eco. If you have 5 workers somewhere 40% is like a two worker bonus. I THINK it makes sense to go prelate off the bat as his total overall bonus increases with worker count effectively
I'm a huge fan of Prelate play asap. I have been trying builds that get one right off the bat, and it seems like it quickly pays for itself. I find it leaves one open to early pressure, so beware if facing a known dark age rusher!
@@hybralisk Prelate, vill, vill. This gets you to 8. By the time you get the 8th vill (prelates can inspire up to 8 at a time), you have banked about 150-250 food. This gives enough of a buffer to start another "prelate party", or 8 vills and a prelate, and not idle at all while gathering another resource. You can then go to 5 vills and repeat the process. I like for land maps, investing into a prelate party on gold till about 600. This sounds weird, and isn't really efficient out of context, but in context it's going to be used quickly for age, prelates, and allows you to then swap to wood and move to hunting a boar, deer, or fish if they are a slower civ. it also allows for survival techniques with less investment compared to other civs, as you get more bonus faster and quicker. If micro'd effectively, and getting maximum or near maximum efficiency for your prelates, you are getting about a 20% increase on resources gathered compared to if you are not using prelates at all, presuming you stay on 1 tc and don't use increased resources to, you know, boom or get more favorable trades.
I think the income boost from one Prelate right away is totally worth. Can more than make it back for it's cost and still hit Feudal in a decent time. Vrs all except maybe a super agro Mongol on a small map. xD
I want to advocate for rams in open field combat. It's especially useful for HRE. Fill the rams up with those melee bois, run those loaded rams up to enemy siege units. Unload them and laugh as they pop most siege. It works vrs just about every siege except for Ribauldequins, and spaced out Mangonels. The real strength of this ram push is when facing tons of Archers/Longbows and especially Crossbows. Those units all barely scratch the rams, but would otherwise decimate the poor melee bois. :)
Yeah, some possible counterplay to this ram strategy is blocking the rams with units and such. It doesn't work too well in tight areas around buildings too, so beware. Lots of them might not be able to attack much else after their first couple targets die. I feel like this is an excellent way to get a ton of use out of the Lansknechts, *except* when facing any form of splash damage. They will die even faster than they normally would. XD
So, you engage the enemy with some other units. Say like, archers for example. Let's say that the enemy has archers of their own, but they keep kiting away from you. The whole time your rams are getting closer to them, they are giving up ground, letting you have map control. If they sit and wait for your ram, nice. Either way seems better than letting your melee take hits before they are upon them. Let's say you are being besieged. They have a bunch of melee and ranged protecting their siege weapons. If you just send in your melee, they will take hits long before they reach the enemy. Especially from Mangonels. Well, in a ram, they take zero damage until they exit, or the ram is destroyed. The best case would be you get to unload your force on top of them, and the ram has some juicy targets to hit if they built forward structures. Worst case is your ram soaks damage that would have slaughtered your melee otherwise, simply buying you more time to work out some other engagement. And maybe, just maybe, that soaking could have been enough to get your melee into position to win. Another thing. In big open battles, especially in team games, people aren't going to always notice every detail. If you load up a ram and send it into the fight, there's usually a good chance the ram is going to live and reach whatever destination you give it. I'm basically just saying it's a great tool to have in your pocket of strategies.
@@ShaggyLunchCake It trains villagers in 5 seconds when training a villager normally takes 20 seconds. It's quadruple speed, so either the tooltip is poorly written or the building is coded improperly. The game has a lot of examples of this, where they say "trains X% faster", but they really mean "production time reduced by X%".

PSA, villagers complete their current task before going onto the next. Specifically when you shift click commands. Not saying Turin, just seen a lot of people in general running into issues with unbuilt buildings. Remember if a villager is mining, chopping wood, or whatever they will complete doing that specific task before going to construct an armoury for example. TLDR; be careful when shift clicking to make buildings because the initial click needs to be without holding shift to pull villagers over.

Charlemagne is also buried here. Aachen is an old city rich in History with many old buildings still standing from times influenced by the HRE!
This unfinished house was infuriating, even supply blocked you for a bit ahah (you ordered the worker to build a mining camp before the house was finished).
Couple of HRE tips - If you go Burgrave then build your farms around it. You can fit like 30 farms and mills around the thing which makes them about 30% better - which is better than alot of farm -specific boosts of other factions. Invest in Mangonels! - People counter HRA MaA with crossbows. But mangos counter crossbows. So mangonells and MaA is a great unit composition. Landskneckts - arent really worth it. They do high damage but their archer-tier health and armor and 100g cost is way to high to ever pay off. By age 3 I only build Men at arms if im going infantry. The 2 handed tech - is currently bugged. But still worth it. Church - It has a tech to improve inspired gather rate by 10% (To +50%!) and has a tech to grant some of all resources for relics in addition to gold. with 3+ relics this is a no brain buy.
Hey pressing F1 auto-select all your military buildings so you don’t need to group them, doing so will center ur cam on the selected building but you could always turn it off in the settings.
Hey Turin, enjoying the video! I noticed you said the spearmen can brace for calvary with the V mode. You should probably test this for yourself rather than just take my word for it, but I believe they dont have to be in the V mode to get their braces down for calvary. Like I said, probably should test it rather than just take my word on it, but I think thats how it works!
The F1-4 keys are hellah useful. F1 = All military production F2 = ECO upgrades F3 = Military upgrades and F4 = Landmark/Town Centers (I think, might've mixed up the order) Edit: Also, as a hopeful HRE main, you give me hope. Really enjoying the Delhi rn :)

The takeaway I get is that it's better to use the stop command and make your spearmen idle before a charge hits as they will automatically brace for it from any direction, where as hold ground is only directional.
Even though HRE has some clear weaknesses keeping it out of the high tiers, I really like their style. I think its worth playing the faction you like, more than the "best" faction. I love the solid HRE play. Win or lose, your content is fantastic. With Regards to the Man at arms upgrades. I read that getting 2 handed weapons is better than maces because if you get both their attack speed goes down which actually calculates to an overall DPS loss. So until it's patched, only 2 handed weapons is worth taking.
Someone made a video on it. You get -1 attack but the 2handed tech has a secret +15 hp. In a 30MAA vs 15 knights you end up at about same %hp results. So same result but with +2dmg vs non armored targets Edit: waddling duck has the video
I'm a noobie, and I find funny how fast these games are decided. I was under the impression we were in the mid game just to realize the video had just 2 minutes left to end. I was like... how come? wtf. Yup, one small fight and it's over.
Just an idea but maybe finish the keep first before warning the enemy that you are taking the sacred sites :) I feel like with the keep you would have a decisive advantage. Didn't expect I would enjoy AoE content this much, keep up the good work man!
Hey Turin - i discovered that hitting S on your spearmen is actually better than hitting V - they automatically brace from all directions instead of just the direction they are facing. Try it. It actually works.
French having great units for each age feels a bit unbalanced. Plus they even get a great boat too. A bit too much to be honest, though I don’t want the nerf hammer to be too severe like it often is (going from S rank to trash tier in one update lmao)
What do you think about a English tier 2 all in with men at arms spears and long bow rams take all villagers build watch tower in enemy base and keep all workers there to use as archers?
I think rome infantry is surprisingly good. They can tank cavalry long enough and rekt archers I wonder how tanky are they with the cost, are they cheap?

@@turinRTS when I play Starcraft and this game I have a little rule for myself that I don’t have more than 2 workers queued up after the one building per base. Helps me not tie up too many resources
Shift and right click queues movement waypoints, so they'll follow the clicks in order! This also works for villagers, for example constructing a building then queue to harvest wood with shift click and is really useful in general.
No landsnecht? Kept hoping to see a fat 5 of them out of the bergrave, but maybe that's not optimal. They're vulnerable to archers, but they can also just decimate them if you do get a couple in. GG though!
My sense is that you are far too ambitious with your walls. It would be far more realistic and still extremely valuable to do internal walling. Like on this map, you could have walled from the forest by the berry bushes towards your TC. This would force the royal knights to walk into range of your TC to access the back of your base, but also create a natural interception point for your spearmen to drag down the filthy french. It is really not that expensive to build a gate, and palisades are relevant later on, to deal with harass (about all they are good for, later on, as any push will knock them down almost instantly when they are in the middle of nowhere and the enemy has siege and mass melee). This would also prevent direct approach to your outpost, which as you can see... is not invincible. You could also then have moved the outpost forward a little, to cover the wall... and it will pretty much be safe until you delete it, and mid game, you can either delete it to allow worker passage through, or put in a gate and have somewhere to retreat to when your workers get harassed. really, spears only counter cavalry in enclosed spaces, when the horsemen are isolated from archers. Walls are how to achieve that, and they are incredibly cheap, as you can wall like 3 miles with the wood needed to make 2 spearmen. even if you HAD established that wall in the middle of nowhere, the english could have burned it down reasonably quickly, or just went completely around and still been able to approach your base from any angle.

Early harass in this game is in such a weird place. You can straight up beat their defensive response and still not recoup the cost spent on the harassing units because it's too easy to keep your economic units out of too much danger. I like starcraft more where you have to have an effective response to early harass or your economy is destroyed. In this game it's harder for your attempt to harass to go bad but the reward is also so low if it goes well. Starcraft is the complete opposite, it's high risk and high reward.
I think it's still just amateur hour for defenders. Like look at this defense. 30 wood would build a giant wall from the berry bush forest towards the TC. Then you could move your outpost forwards slightly to cover the wall from melee attackers. This would make it impossible to threaten the outpost (and it's workers) without taking shots from the TC, and impossible to threaten the wall without taking shots from the outpost (except from archers, but it takes like 1500 arrows to knock down a single section of wall). Way less lost mining time, and you could prevent tanky harass units (like knights) from being supported by squishy slow support units, like archers. This would also create a choke to enter and leave the base, which would allow you to force a fight with your spearmen, just by intercepting cavalry in the choke. This sort of thing, I suspect, will start getting hard crushed by proper base sim city, in a week or two, once people figure out how to actually lay out a base properly. The reason starcraft doesn't look like this is because people have already figured this shit out. Try watching a zerg vs terran sometime when the terran screws up his wall off, or the zerg somehow stops it from being properly established. In fact, it is what SC multiplayer DID look like at the start: zergling rushes in every game until finally terrans learned the secret of walling off. In both brood war and SC2, it looks even more one sided than this, and walling off in brood war is a LOT more complicated than it is in AOE4, when you literally have a building called a "wall", that doesn't have arcane rules around how stuff can be positioned around it to allow passage or deny passage to small and medium units.
@@timmietimmins3780 I agree but that just makes what I said worse. Once defenders get better harass will become EXTREMELY niche. Defenders are already barely using any of their options to defeat early aggression and can take minimal damage from a failed defense. Early harass right now is low risk, low reward. Soon it will be medium risk, no reward as people get better at defending and people will stop harassing. Early game will become all about timing pushes to try to win the game and outside of that there will be no early game.
I think they will have a place to patch it from at that point. The reality is, you can't balance the game around people who fundamentally don't understand it. Once people start building properly, they can reduce building health by a lot, I suspect. Or make archers do much more damage to walls, to make breaching them realistic before siege equipment comes out. I do wonder what age of empires 2 competitive looked like though. I get the impression they had really strong fortifications, but that game supported a competitive scene for a long time, I think.
The only issue I have with this game and it's probably just a bit of a learning curve is it's being played "too fast". You are jumping over the map like you are on speed and you even talk like you are on speed. I'm doing well at my own pace but this type of fast play is not much fun for some of us. I know I'm not alone in this.
So I love Age 4 and all and I get that it's the meta, but could we also mix in some total war stuff still? It's honestly sort of annoying that the SC2 channels I follow are doing Age 4, the total war channel I follow (you) is doing Age 4, heck even the Hearthstone guy I follow is doing Age 4. I have really enjoyed your Age 4 content, but a mix of content would be preferable to me at least.
Love the content and iam working hard at getting gud to play on one of your tournaments. But iam sure I speak for alot of us when I say watching or playing against the French is getting really really old.

Should definitely spam villagers out of the Palace of Swabia if you have it: It builds villagers at quadruple speed at only 12 food each.
I dont think its quadruple speed, only 1.75 faster. Thats how 75% faster works, 400% would be quadruple speed.

At 26:20 you see just how good springalds are as a counter to French knights. Definitely an underused unit.

Hey Turin, enjoying the video! I noticed you said the spearmen can brace for calvary with the V mode. You should probably test this for yourself rather than just take my word for it, but I believe they dont have to be in the V mode to get their braces down for calvary. The F1-4 keys are hellah useful. F1 = All military production F2 = ECO upgrades F3 = Military upgrades and F4 = Landmark/Town Centers (I think, might've mixed up the order)

The takeaway I get is that it's better to use the stop command and make your spearmen idle before a charge hits as they will automatically brace for it from any direction, where as hold ground is only directional.
Even though HRE has some clear weaknesses keeping it out of the high tiers, I really like their style. I think its worth playing the faction you like, more than the "best" faction.
I love the solid HRE play. Win or lose, your content is fantastic.
With Regards to the Man at arms upgrades. I read that getting 2 handed weapons is better than maces because if you get both their attack speed goes down which actually calculates to an overall DPS loss. So until it's patched, only 2 handed weapons is worth taking.
Someone made a video on it. You get -1 attack but the 2handed tech has a secret +15 hp. In a 30MAA vs 15 knights you end up at about same %hp results. So same result but with +2dmg vs non armored targets

Shift and right click queues movement waypoints, so they'll follow the clicks in order! This also works for villagers, for example constructing a building then queue to harvest wood with shift click and is really useful in general.

My sense is that you are far too ambitious with your walls. It would be far more realistic and still extremely valuable to do internal walling. Like on this map, you could have walled from the forest by the berry bushes towards your TC. This would force the royal knights to walk into range of your TC to access the back of your base, but also create a natural interception point for your spearmen to drag down the filthy french. It is really not that expensive to build a gate, and palisades are relevant later on, to deal with harass (about all they are good for, later on, as any push will knock them down almost instantly when they are in the middle of nowhere and the enemy has siege and mass melee).
This would also prevent direct approach to your outpost, which as you can see... is not invincible.
You could also then have moved the outpost forward a little, to cover the wall... and it will pretty much be safe until you delete it, and mid game, you can either delete it to allow worker passage through, or put in a gate and have somewhere to retreat to when your workers get harassed.
really, spears only counter cavalry in enclosed spaces, when the horsemen are isolated from archers. Walls are how to achieve that, and they are incredibly cheap, as you can wall like 3 miles with the wood needed to make 2 spearmen.
even if you HAD established that wall in the middle of nowhere, the english could have burned it down reasonably quickly, or just went completely around and still been able to approach your base from any angle.

Early harass in this game is in such a weird place. You can straight up beat their defensive response and still not recoup the cost spent on the harassing units because it's too easy to keep your economic units out of too much danger.
I like starcraft more where you have to have an effective response to early harass or your economy is destroyed. In this game it's harder for your attempt to harass to go bad but the reward is also so low if it goes well. Starcraft is the complete opposite, it's high risk and high reward.
I think it's still just amateur hour for defenders. Like look at this defense. 30 wood would build a giant wall from the berry bush forest towards the TC. Then you could move your outpost forwards slightly to cover the wall from melee attackers. This would make it impossible to threaten the outpost (and it's workers) without taking shots from the TC, and impossible to threaten the wall without taking shots from the outpost (except from archers, but it takes like 1500 arrows to knock down a single section of wall). Way less lost mining time, and you could prevent tanky harass units (like knights) from being supported by squishy slow support units, like archers.
This would also create a choke to enter and leave the base, which would allow you to force a fight with your spearmen, just by intercepting cavalry in the choke. This sort of thing, I suspect, will start getting hard crushed by proper base sim city, in a week or two, once people figure out how to actually lay out a base properly.
The reason starcraft doesn't look like this is because people have already figured this shit out. Try watching a zerg vs terran sometime when the terran screws up his wall off, or the zerg somehow stops it from being properly established. In fact, it is what SC multiplayer DID look like at the start: zergling rushes in every game until finally terrans learned the secret of walling off.
In both brood war and SC2, it looks even more one sided than this, and walling off in brood war is a LOT more complicated than it is in AOE4, when you literally have a building called a "wall", that doesn't have arcane rules around how stuff can be positioned around it to allow passage or deny passage to small and medium units.
@@timmietimmins3780 I agree but that just makes what I said worse. Once defenders get better harass will become EXTREMELY niche. Defenders are already barely using any of their options to defeat early aggression and can take minimal damage from a failed defense. Early harass right now is low risk, low reward. Soon it will be medium risk, no reward as people get better at defending and people will stop harassing. Early game will become all about timing pushes to try to win the game and outside of that there will be no early game.
I think they will have a place to patch it from at that point. The reality is, you can't balance the game around people who fundamentally don't understand it. Once people start building properly, they can reduce building health by a lot, I suspect. Or make archers do much more damage to walls, to make breaching them realistic before siege equipment comes out.
I do wonder what age of empires 2 competitive looked like though. I get the impression they had really strong fortifications, but that game supported a competitive scene for a long time, I think.

The only issue I have with this game and it's probably just a bit of a learning curve is it's being played "too fast". You are jumping over the map like you are on speed and you even talk like you are on speed. I'm doing well at my own pace but this type of fast play is not much fun for some of us. I know I'm not alone in this.

I have really enjoyed your Age 4 content, but a mix of content would be preferable to me at least.
