Which .NET on a Mac type are you?

- dotnet, or .NET as it's been known from time to time, has grown into a nice cross platform framework that even runs natively on Apple Silicon now. The environment around dotnet is still under development if you're on a Mac or Linux.

A lot of Rider fans out there. I tried it out after making this video and so far I’m pretty impressed. Going to have to do some more hands on work with it and maybe even a video on Rider vs Visual Studio. If interested, thumb up this comment, or reply. Cheers!
Yes please!
Of course rider beats visual studio 😂😂
Rider is awesome
i’m waiting for this :)
Yep, I switched to Rider to do all my .NET API work when I switched to MB pro M1. I tried all the solutions you posted and Rider was by far the best. Then stayed with VS Code for the front end.
Jetbrains Rider all the way!
Much better experience on the Mac
Whats so good about Rider compared to VS? Still better on a Windows machine?
Long time ago, people had Visual Studio and they installed resharper. Rider is more or less like VS (there are some differences) but with resharper built in.
Jetbrains Rider on Intel Mac
I vote for Rider too
Rider works just fine on either intel or m1 Mac
Visual Studio 2022 for Mac 17.0 Preview 5 now natively supports Apple Silicon 🙂
Finally!
I use a MacStudio M1 with Rider. I’ll be interested to see how the C# Dev Kit for VS Code works out. Would love to see some Rider on Mac vs Visual Studio on Windows comparisons especially for .Net Maui development.
Thanks for the video, as helpful as usual. I’d thank for a deeper video in this topic.
Hi Alex, On January 25, 2022, Visual Studio 2022 for Mac version 17.0 Preview 5 was released, which supports Apple's M1 processor. Which Preview version did you test?
thanks for making such a useful tutorials/videos
Thank God you know about Rider. It is far better than VS 2022 for Mac. Great Video
Hey thanks for this video.
I had similar performance problem on m1 16 max and visual studio 2022 running on win 11 through parallels.
What helped me to increase the VS performance was to increase the parallels vm cores and ram from 4 core 4 gb ram to 8 core 16 gb of ram.
I use Rider on my M1 Pro. The only drawback with Rider is their boilerplate applications are a bit lacking.
Also no LibMan:(
it was a really useful video, would be nice if you make a series of videos telling us about your experience developing this webApp
The coincidence! I just got my 14” MBP and I’m setting up my .NET environment, got to say it is kind of a mess, but I was able to setup VS19 and VS22 for mac. I’ll buy rider later
Rider works very well in MacOS. Btw, what sweater are you wearing?
My daily work is as .Net developer, my main drive a M1 Mac 16", and I wouldn't develop anywhere else than on Jetbrains Rider
the .net sdk has been broken so many times by having other sdks on the m1 Mac.. You had the best experience I've ever seen
Thank you for this video!
Sure :)
Currently running .Net 6 on M1 Max using Jetbrains Rider.
Can u please a tutorial on “How to download GCC compiler in m1 macs?
How well does Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) work running under Windows 11 arm?
I am using Parallels and installed VS 2022 on windows 11
So can you use it without problems? Can you write about your experiences?
Hi how was it? Is it possible to create winforms?
looking for a video comparing vs to rider on mac
Hey great video dude. Need to know how you get on with that. I cannot decide whether to get intel or m1 macbook pro. Can you do all that u need in vscode on mac?
Believe me, I share the same feelings. I don't want to go back to windows so I guess I'll just switch to the cli side. Thanks for your sharing...
it is good idea take m1 pro with 16ram for use .net developer in parallels and windows 11?
This is very helpful.
Can you please help me to run window form application on VS for mac?
So it means should I sell my M1 Pro and buy again Windows machine? Or keep Macbook and wait for stable version VS 2022 for MacOS?
Still waiting on the sql sever docker image for arm!!
😂
+, azure really sucks at this point. Hope microsoft is going to do sql server
sqledge image works fine for me
Azure SQL Edge runs in a container on my M1 every workday
Hi Alex! Really keen to see some examples of relatively complex web app launched and maintained using VSC. It's interesting to see how working with different projects inside one solution as well as debugging and running the unit tests are handled there. Thanks for all your videos!
Why can't I work with wpf or windows form?
Any motivation to use mackbook for .NET Developers.😀 there r many topics and jargon from azure platform from azure developer to IOT services might not work in macbook .
Truth is It is used by architects and managers for designing ppts and system diagrams only.
I'm using Visual Studio for Mac! But for now, I'm just learning C#
I am a dot net fullstack dev using windows all life but want to switch to mac can you make a comparison video on windows vs mac
can I/we get:
- 1 video on creating a .NET (Core) app in VS20224Mac in MAUI then same on Parallels WS2022 (ultimate next gen .Net and next WPF as cross platform)(I know its all beta but I want to use my Mac OS and the old migrate from .Net Framework project and give up on parallels cause as slow as i3 from 2014 in some cases (Intellicode background analysis; when opening WPF forms first time)
- 1 video on any other MAC WPF equivalent in VS20224Mac (non MAUI video to see if productivity is increased even if features not on par the the old .Net Framework WPF build your UI w drag and drop old old but still the easiest method)
have u tried remoting into your windows machine? even iPad pro can use rdp, offloading much of the processing. windows on arm isnt there yet.
Z
The ARM version of Windows 11 does not support any version of IIS. I suspect that might be why your code can't be served within Visual Studio. I had to install Apache to spin up a web server in Windows 11 ARM (although I suspect there are other options available).
Oh IIS Express works, but the project won’t start if https is enabled
@@AZisk Well now that IS interesting. Everything I've read has suggested that no version of IIS, including IIS Express, works on Windows on Arm. How did you manage that? Does VS install its own version or something?
@@angrysob7962 yes it comes with vs
@@AZisk Are you sure about IIS Express? .netCore should be using Kestrel as a IIS Replacement for multiplatform support.
Do you find that M1 macbook air with 16GB of RAM should be enough for DevOps tasks (VS code, IaC tools like terraform or ansible, cli tools, Docker, kubernetes, scripts writing in Powershell, bash, Python, from time to time coding and compiling applications in C#) or should I go with the new MacBook pro with M1 pro chip?
yes
Please make some on react js
Please share also SQL Server + SSMS. I tried on paralells but can not install SSMS
On the M1 I have been using Azure SQL Edge in a container and either my IDE or Azure Data Studio as a database client. Rider for IDE. VS for Mac is just Xamarin Studio and will never be good.
When Apple came out with their brand new PowerPC computers, Microsoft was caught putting in millions of NOOP loops to make Office look really slow. Not saying this is the case, but...
I come from a world where my monolith solution takes 45 mins to build and with tests another 30 mins. Visual studio is the only option . And even that crashes every other time
Vim and yes .Net learning videos would be great!
Maybe I didn't understand something but for me Visual Studio works fine through rosetta.
I hate visual studio for mac because I am a beginner and as soon as i got used to Visual studio on windows, I switched to mac, and i had hard time getting used to visual studio for mac. Please do a tutorial on vs for mac, and with vs code. Love your videos!
jetbrains Rider IDE is also good option
They dumped Visual Studio 2022 so I jumped ship to Rider and never looked back.
jetbrains
I found Visual Studio a real pain to use... Ok it does lots of things, but with MANY simple things, such as embrace a selection with braces, it fails miserably
Hi, actually I use .NET Cli
Im using Rider
Just started using jet brains rider.
Unity mode is VMWare ;)
Old habits
VS for mac is gonna die this summer ;(
Visual Studio 2022 on Windows 11.
Visual Studio 2019
Great video. Hopefully Microsoft puts some effort into performance on arm in the future
I seriously doubt that. Mac and M1 chips are only good for video editing. Everything else is fubar.
Hello, there is something i do not understand: You say Visual Studio is slow under Windows 11 virtual machine because windows 11 translates x64 instructions to arm. But Visual Studio is written in .Net ? So there are no translation because this is MSIL instructions ?
Has anyone tried VS 2022 windows version using wine?
I started using mono and MonoStudio/XamarinStudio on my Mac. When VS Code was released and .NET Core came out I was working at a startup and migrated to .NET Core over a period of 6-12 months. When VS for Mac came out, started to use that...but it's even buggy to this day that I've gotten so used to using the cli and VS Code. I made 1 project using Xamarin Forms that I'm slowing migrating to Xamarin iOS/Android and will eventually migrate to native because the whole experience has me frustrated. In summary, thanks to .net core I feel like I can do more with .NET than before when I was a Windows dev since I had to learn how to manually do things being an early adopter. I feel like I just ended up in a different place than the start of the comment 😆 just like my .NET journey 😆
Visual studio 2022, and vs code
Rider ❤️
And today I started to think sell my M1 and buy a Ryzen PC instead :( I couldn't make SQL server work on M1, Parallels 17, Windows 11 insider ARM version. Anything I found indicates I wouldn't be able to, still I am trying but at my wits end.
With sqlserver image on docker it will work
@@lukasglaser5679 Well I have to repeat once more here. I don't want to use docker image, I want to use local SQL server. And mind you, already moved to a Ryzen based PC for development and I am glad I did. It is much faster than my Intel based mac and way faster than M1 Mac.
@@ahmettek315 faster than M1 mac? What M1? Pro? Max?
@@mokanin8894 M1. I only used Mac Mini M1 2020 (Model A2348), 16 Gb RAM, 1 Tb disk.
It is still with me and I am doing almost nothing with it at this moment. But think to create a 3 monitors setup, then connect to Ryzen based PC via remote desktop. Thus I can work on windows development fast and also do Mac development all from the same machine. It is sort of hard having separate monitor and keyboard, trackpad\mouse. Remote desktop is certainly way better than virtualizing (yet alone my Parallels subscription ended 9-10 days ago and they are asking too much for renewal, maybe VMware fusion 13 Player or UTM - both free - would do but RDP is a good choice for me now).
macbook m1, dotnet and using neovim xd
Jetbrains Rider
Sadly the main project I work on is still .Net Framework so can't use my new MacBook for it.
first keep it up king❤
Rider !
My experience of trying to use Visual Studio for Mac is DON'T! It's a half-baked crock, and absolutely clear that Microsoft can't write Mac applications! I have wasted hours trying to get Visual Studio for Mac 2022 to run a (blank) templated Blazor app - it just doesn't work! Error after error, and it's slow and buggy! Life is too short to mess around with this type of software!
VS code works excellent for me on m1 Mac.
@@warrior100girlvs code is different from visual studio lol
For me the only one really decent piece of software by (micro) (soft) is vscode.
Everything else including windows is just huge pain in the ass. Per my opinion of course.
So glad I once picked Java and ditched that bs, agh ms.
VS 2022 sucks also on a regular Windows machine. Forced to step back to VS 2019...
just dont use .NET
Rider!
