In 1965 I served with the 2AC / 34th Artillery out of Nurnberg. Border Patrol along the Czech border was my charge. I supported units with mobile radio repair. Nurnberg was my city and Lainey was my girl. I left her behind and it broke my heart. How stupid was I? Now it is 55 years later and I still think of her. She and I are both old now and she may even be dead. There are times I wished that I never came back to the USA. It was only two years of my life that I will never forget.

Served in both 2ACR and much later in 14th. I was there in 1986 to 1989 when the Soviets fell apart. Was a great time to be in Germany.

I remember asking a vet who served in Germany if they were bothered by the radicals. He said in these areas they were very friendly to Americans especially the farmers who made their own wine in these parts.

Been there done that, I was a guard at a Nike Hercules nuclear missile site in West Germany 7/76-1/79, my second tour was in the 8th Infantry Division Baumholder, West Germany 3/85-1/88 also participated in REFORGER 85 almost 6 years in country. Best times of my life. Shout out to all the cold war warriors.

The Fulda gap was a big concern for mass tank and armor movement should a war erupt.

1-37 Ar Bn, Ansbach and then Vilseck 1988-1990. We did a border rotation when 2 ACR went to gunnery training, I think in 1990 just before the wall came down!

I'm glad those armored cav regiments were there guarding the border. The Soviets were a threat, but it was mostly perceived. But, we had to be ready just in case. After the USSR crumbled in 1991, the US Army worked directly with the Czech army. We learned that the Czechs had no intention of invading western Europe. They hated the Russians and the soviet empire for even stepping on Czech soil. The Czechs had a beautiful country only set back 45+ years behind the iron curtain under the soviet thumb. Now, they thrive again.

the ussr/russia wasnt a preceived threat but a genuine and potential one at that time.
