I remember them and their artistry. SO good. FYI: i'm a 70 year old straight grandma who fought for women's rights, civil rights and gay rights. But they were pioneers. Don't you young people who haven't gone through this shit forget the shit others went through for you. SINGING! : )
My dear friends. Many beautiful memories of producing concerts for them or assisting them in Chicago. Wonderful talents and wonderful people. Michael Callen was my special angel and opened up a whole new world to me of thought and people. Thank you Dick Dworkin for introducing us; I shall forever be proud of knowing Mike.
Joel, I am writing a book about Michael Callen--I know "Dickie D" quite well and have published a number of academic articles about Michael's music already.. Would you be interested in chatting with me about your friendship with him?
I remember going down to the Village every Sunday night to hear them at the Actors Playhouse. Just wonderful joy and music and activism and empowerment all rolled into one.
They were deeper and more real that the term PC suggests. I remember seeing them in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Callen was wonderful even though he had to lay down on the stage to rest between sets.
Fritz, I have the CD. Not sure how to connect with you, but I will share if we find a way. Love from Las Vegas NV. The Flirtations were incredible. I love them all then and now!!
This CD was my comming out CD ... I would like to find a copy ... this is so powerful, and uplifting for all our LGBT youth .... PLEASE send this to all the ones you love. If anyone has a copy please let me know.
I think they are only being called politically correct, and not the fact that they are gay, is that they tackle issues regardless of race, nationality, gender, etc. The man who wrote this song suffered under the duress of racism in South Africa. The Flirtations merely just took it on as a project to assimilate it to the gay fight for equality.
Not quite, he is British and started writing this song when he watched a documentary about South African apartheid. And while he was writing it, he realised he was also writing it about his own gay life experience.

I loved these guys. Michael Callen had the voice of an angel. I know that he is singing in the Heavenly choir.
I still play their songs from the original CD. Great harmony and whimsy and poignancy, And I'm a 70 year old straight grandma.

I was a close friend of Michael's when he lived in NYC. I loved him and miss him very much.

The Flirtations from the 1990's :)
I always loved these guys.... I think they might have been wise to have chosen a different name.
