Summary:
This is a killer performance all around. This is arguably the greatest Talking Heads lineup (with King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew in scorching form!) and most of the "Remain In Light" material performed when it was groundbreaking and new. Fans should love every second of this incredible performance.
Just the fact the dude is playing the whole synth part by hand...not a loop
I know I'm a bit surprised aha
Bernie Worrell of P-Funk.... we lost him recently. died because he was unable to afford his medical care. welcome to the united states....
Youd think it was sequenced....nope!....a real hand made syth bed:)
If im not mistaken, his name was Bernie Worrell
I dig the rolling 3-over-4 pattern.
He is doing it unconsciously, which is quite fitting, given the songs primary theme
And you may find yourself watching this in 2020~ and you may say to yourself; “My God where has the time gone!”
david krent sooo freaking true.
Same as it ever was.
Too bleeding right 😂
best comment !
Happy to give this # 100 thumbs up. "Time isn't holding us. Time isn't after us."
2:12 Feel the Bern "Berrnie Worrell" keyboardist for Parliament / Funkadelic
R.I.P.
The best part? He's doing all that manually. In the pocket. NO SEQUENCER.
that's talent.
David Byrne is unique talent.❤
You may say to yourself, what a fukn lineup of great players, once in a lifetime.
Great reply George.....
Well said George
you can see the sense of greatness inside these lyrics, it just gets bigger and bigger until it reaches a state of intemporal apocalipse. it was big in 1980 and it's still as huge and relevant in 2020, truly impressive
Same As It Ever Was..
In-F’ing- Deed!
I love them but youre an idiot
same as it ever was
Bernie Worrell on keys Adrian Belew on guitar just made this much more of an epic monstrosity.
Those are hosses.
Bernie Worrell. A legend. Love his keyboard work here among his other work. #RIP
Im feelin' the "Bern"
To the lost 🍻
In many ways Byrne is a musical Sheldon. Just as brilliant. Just as awkward. Just as beautiful.
" and I say to myself" .....as I approach the middle of my 5th decade on this planet, this song makes more sense than it did when I first heard it in school! "into the silent waters"....."how did I get here?" ........"and as the days go by"
That song will never be out of style ...NEVEr!!!!!
This song makes me feel so good. It has since the first time I heard it. I expect it always will.
Anyone brought here by David Byrne’s #SNL performance on 2/29/20? Sounds good as ever.
His voice is stronger here - more like the one heard on the record. But SNL performance at 67 years old was amazing.
You betcha. Wow.
you tube removed the snl video 2020 performance b/c of copyright i think
Great drumming. Solid as a rock.
This is dope!! Bernie Worrell from Funkadelic on keys and the bass player Busta Jones is tight too!!
Adrian on guitar.
@@MilesBellas He's dope too!! :)
@@MilesBellas How did he play a guitar down by his knees, though?
@@stevekastenbaum6678
Yes !!!!
It moved up in later years in defiance of gravity !!!!
My favorite lineup of this band.
Great performance!!!
2:03 is by far the best part.
for me this Capitol theater show is the zenith - this lineup and performance.
Bernie Worrell. A legend. Love his keyboard work here among his other work. #RIP
The growth of this band's music from their formation in 1975 to the time of this 1980 performance is extraordinary.
To be alive is a fine thing. It is the finest thing in the world, though hazardous. It is a unique thing. It happens only once in a lifetime. To be alive, to know consciously that you are alive, and to relish that knowledge - this is a kind of magic. Or it may be a kind of madness, exhilarating but harmless....Don't waste your time to make new dreams. but waste it to make one of your lifetime dream, come true....
Well said!
Touchè
petros pappas Thank you.....
you have said the word! Buddha word :)
Wow. Just, wow.
Never ever tired of this....pure genious
The B-52s played 3 days after this...I was 6 months old. The true golden days for the Capitol Theatre.
I think it was February, I don't know. I just know for sure it was the same year though, but The Clash also performed there. Golden days indeed
this performance is the future i'm still waiting on.
1 of those rare songs that has everything 👍
I grew up in the 80's but somehow didn't get into this band back then. Now I find myself blown away by them. I mean I heard the hits and MTV made sure WIld Wild Life and Burning Down the House got heard a lot. But at that time I was to young and stupid to appreciate these guys.
It's okay. When the student is ready, the teacher shall appear
This song never bores me it is like a forever hit !!! ❤️❤️
So much better than the official video! Raw talent. ☺️
Ahead of there time live love and leave a legacy they’ve done it❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Damn. Hard to decide which one is better - this one or the SNL performance on 2020-02-29 ... BRAVO!
It's definitely good to see him freed from behind the guitar. (Why keep playing guitar after you add Adrian Below to your band?). IMO, that opens up a whole new dimension to his weirdness when he's running around on stage acting out his existential angst.
Just came from there. Great!
I liked that, in the SNL performance, he acted like a motivational speaker. That matched the lyrics perfectly.
This one is much better. It is the real thing after all. The SNL version is him trying to recreate magic that's already lost now. I personally think the Stop Making Sense version is the best
@@jaspergillgannon4991 yep! STOP MAKING SENSE!
The message in this song comes thru here way more than it does in the "hit" version.
What a perfect amalgamation of musicians. The sweet sweet ways of the universe...☺️🥰
Damn, almost 40 years ago. Where does it go...
My favorite song by this group I remember it in 1983 the official video was awesome I'm jealous over David Byrne he was great over this one song that's powerful good job david

Wow. What a great concert. They look like they're having a lot of fun up there.
I didn't 'discover' them until the 1990's. Loving this song still in 2021; Bernie Worrell on keyboards is manic.
Bernie is amazing in this. All so cool.
MILES Ahead of Anything going on right now! 42+ years Later...Still!
legend says, the keyboard dude is still playing that riff
Wow. What a great concert. They look like they're having a lot of fun up there.
How come Tina is not playing the bass? and who is?
Simply awesome... Love the talking heads!!!
Best live version ever!!!!
Taking me back, THIS IS HOW IT WAS...
Wonderful time, much fun and many things to do without dangers like we have today...
GREAT music THAT will be remembered like "muscle cars" and this particular era.
Gawd, seems so long ago !
SO BADLY NEEDED AGAIN 😢...
"And you may ask yourself how do I work this" the line here is used by myself daily from now on! Thanks David
the best
Wow, what a performance.
Timeless truth. Letting the days go by.
Time isn’t holding us 💫
Time isn’t after us.
I ve seen them twice. I miss the 80s
I'm not a Talking Heads fan but I cant help but admire how way ahead of its time this song is.
I'm kind of a jazz snob, have not really got into rock but have listened to some. I would have to say I LOVE THIS!
I love it too and I find a lot of Miles' "On the corner" vibes
Masterful truly Superb.
Timeless Groove.... Music for your soul.... Look how hard everyone is feeling it...
Sublime...
Same as it eva was.......
♥
Timeless and thank you for a great upload.
You may say to yourself, no auto tune or anything else added! Just real musicians. I love it😂
Aaaaaaaaaah speechless. Except for unforgettable.
Sublime...
🎼🎶🎶🎶🎤 for me the best "once in a life time"👑 great times the 80's Talking Heads my biggest 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great performance!!!
You can feel how fresh this was. They’re digging it themselves;
I think this is better than the SMS version.
I like all the singers impact
THIS IS A TALENTED SINGER 🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶🎵🎶🎶🎵🎶🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶 DAVID BYRNE 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 WHAT A LEGENDARY GUY😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

2:03 is by far the best part.
Andrew Heakes lol
THE BEST.
Simply awesome... Love the talking heads!!!
You can tell yourself this version rocks!!!
for me this Capitol theater show is the zenith - this lineup and performance.
Better than the official video. Just brilliant live footage.🎼✌️❤️
I knew Talking Heads had to have some black musicians, this song has that funk groove to it, this band is just bad-ass!
Can you believe one web site voted Talking Heads the best artist of the 1980's? And rightfully so🤩.
Epicness and history right here.
Pure greatness.
Anyone brought here by David Byrne’s #SNL performance on 2/29/20? Sounds good as ever.
U may ask urself what kind of acid am i trippin on ? Ah, the good ole days, same as it over was !
2:03 is by far the best part.

Hell yea...
Their greatest tour.
感動しました!!
my mom was born 18 days later...I'm now 13 and I love Talking Heads
Absolutely brilliant!!!!
one of my favorit live versions , way better than the one in LA 1983
Great share!!! This would be unforgettable if I had been there.
nice and jagged funkiness with a manic edge!!
GENIUS !!
Seen them twice great band
wish i was there
This is so great!
incredible
Brilliant! Just brilliant
Hard to reconcile they were this good when I viewed them as a goof novelty act from their video on mtv. Eh I was young.
Great music still love this
Awesome 👏🏻
Yes
Pure Greatness!
This is just too Vicious! Black and White grooving as 1!
Best one ever …
This the best version: a sling shot rhythm with Belew & Byrne guitaring, and those grooving Black musicians bompin' to eternity, "there is water underground" with the Id doing a backflip amid poppy-smoke rising...
Does everyone realize that there is absolutely NO rhythmic modulation in this song, from start to finish. It is one giant philosophical meme sung over one chord. Amazing!
I wouldn't have minded at all if the camera would have just stayed on Tina the whole time.
Wow adrian belew
2:03 is by far the best part.
And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again in the silent water
Under the rocks, and stones there is water underground
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? Am I wrong?
And you may say yourself, "My God! What have I done?"
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again in to the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Look where my hand was
Time isn't holding up
Time isn't after us
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Once in a lifetime
Letting the days go by
Letting the days go by
No auto tuned, everyone is playing thier instruments and Dave is not lip synching his lyrics. Back when live music was great!
Has anyone noticed that 'The Talking Heads' quote "Gloria" by the 1960's group 'Them' in "Once in a Lifetime"? "Once..." is a metaphysical spiritual song and since it's late 20th Century pop music, instead of quoting the classical music "Gloria in excelsis Deo" they quote a musical theme from the third quarter of "Gloria" by Them. Ha!...what a neat hidden reference. "Once in a Lifetime" is such a cool philosophical song, amazing they made it so that it became so popular given they're talking about time travel, instantaneous translocation; and playing off the Ancient Greek Philosopher Thales who said "everything is water" or "made of water"; and one of the main symbols of Taoism are flowing streams; and "Turn off your mind and float downstream" lyrics from 'Tomorrow Never Knows" by Beatles. Such a cool song.
