In England it used to be thought it was rude to call someone black and polite to say coloured, that is what I was taught.
Yeah, same in Scotland. Guess the UK as a whole.
I don't remember when it was changed. It seemed like coloured became a "no-no" early 90s or mid 90s.
They are not black they are brown
@@tellitlikeitis-rg4ny I`m not white either, I`m pink with brown spots ( freckles ) 😂
Yeah. There's the famous Not The Nine O'Clock News "Constable Savage" sketch, where the racist policeman's boss asks "Would I be right in thinking Mr Kodogo is a coloured gentleman?" which would at the the time have been the polite way of asking if he was black.
We used to say black, then in the 70s you were told to say coloured, it’s no wonder the older generation like my dad can’t keep up.
"you look like you escaped from a jar of marmalade" is the funniest line. Robertsons Jam used to have Golliwogs on the labels
I saved up jam jar, labels to get a ceramic, pin?
this should be broadcast in this day and age..full warts and all, if you dont get the message then you never will....joan was brilliant all through the series.
I used to watch this as a kid and we were brought up to have equal respect and we did, we learnt watching this that cheeky insults were shared no matter what your skin colour was and these neighbours a lot like our own neighbours deep down respected and would do anything for each other, we are all humans which is confirmation we are one race 👍
Jack was a lovely bloke and the least racist / race ignorant person you could meet. His son, Adam, is married to Rakie Ayola - a black actress.
I remember watching this first time round, in (ironically) black-and-white, and even as 12 year-olds we knew Eddie was a dickhead and Barbie was gorgeous. And it was funny. But we were also aware of the underlying message and that was down to the beauty of the writing.
As you say there is no way in hell that could be broadcast today and personally I think that's a bit of a shame. Like Till Death us do Part it showed the racist up as an ignorant git.
But probably the 'woke' generation wouldn't understand the nuances.
Pity!
How true. Programmes like Love thy neighbour & in sickness and in health, showed the absurdity of racism & racists. I was about 10 yrs old when love thy neighbour started. And even as kids we knew Eddie & Alf Garnett were the one's being shown up for wankers. Glad you're enjoying love thy neighbour in the spirit it was meant to be. Peace out.
The problem was, especially with till death us do part, the racist didn't grasp that it was actually making Alf Garnet look a fool, they saw him as a hero. The far right brain cannot grasp irony, which actual studies have proved.
Barbie was gorgeous.
Eddie always wrong the black guy always won.
You are right about the so called woke generation not getting this sitcom.
I'm proud you take this on. I was in junior school when this came out, we all laughed at it, we (black & white) knew it was edgy, and why. I'll have half was the funniest.
Wasn't he in another sitcom where his line was "I 'eard that, pardon?"
Uncle Staveley or something? Sure he wore a box on a string around his neck, or has this been a recurring dream?
That was Mr Peacock from "Are you being served?" behind the bar
There are obviously large parts of this series that aren't acceptable now, and haven't been for a long time, but its critics entitely miss the point that the whole point of the series is pointing out the stupidity of racism.
We use to have jam jars in shop that had golliwogs on. (That look like Eddie as black man). Then years later it stopped because it offended. Even there were GW dolls. There were Old films of white men with boot polish on their face and wigs - black & white minstrels.
We loved the Robinson's golliwogs as a kid and loved saving up the paper images from the jars to send off for the enamel badges. My parents loved the Black and White Minstrels and my take on it was that black men were seen as better singers so the white men blacked up. Interesting that the women were always white. People weren't offended because they hadn't been told they should be.
I was taught to say coloured rather than Black, an ex manager I worked for told me in no uncertain terms that I wasn’t to use “coloured” again. Funnily enough I was telling a black girl I worked with that I’d just been chastised for saying coloured because it may cause offence, the context of my use of the word was not to offend. She told me “I identify as coloured, don’t worry about it”. The goal posts have moved over the years and it’s tricky working out how each person will react to what you say regardless of actual context.
I’ve always adored Rudolph Walker’s accent, such a shame it is dying out in the U.K. as the dependents of those who came from the West Indies pick up local regional accents. Rudolph once said that when he goes back to Trinidad people ask if they will make more of the show, obviously that will never happen because the context of the show is lost on many of todays generation, they don’t get that you are supposed to laugh at Eddie & not with him. It’s nice to see Rudolph still working at the age of 84, loved him in the Thin Blue Line.
Rudoph, I was blessed to meet in real life.
In my local pub 😎
Steptoe n son a good series...
The good thing is they do get on as neighbours - and that Eddie and Bill are friends. Bill gives as good as he gets. The series really was to ridicule the few people that had Eddies ignorant views.
Love Thy Neighbour was genuinely hilarious
This helped a lot when I was young fr us too understand each others requirements ,love peace times
I watched this as a child & everyone knew that Eddy was the knob
This isn't racism, it's ignorance... There's no hatred, there's just someone who doesn't understand...
Good point.
Using racist language is not 'necessarily' a sign of embedded racism.
Love you Shady...great entertainment...
😅😅😅😅 Thank you for sharing your reaction made me cry laughing.
Oh mate! More coming today! 🤣
To answer your question. In school when I was a kid growing up in the 70's you were literally taught not to say black as this would cause offence, you had to say coloured lady or gent, few years later we weren't allowed to say coloured person but black; and it was that for years. Now it's back to people of colour.
Question, what's the difference between the offensive coloured person and acceptable person of colour.
Ooh, remember 20 years ago, school words changed to nursery rhyme, "ba ba black sheep", blackboard etc as deemed offensive???
I see you enjoying the theme tune , the singer is Stuart Gillies from Clydebank in Scotland who won Opportunity Knocks in 1973 ( like the 70s version of BGT ) with a song called Amanda .
it's such a beautiful tune!
Most of these kinds of comedy shows were satire. Extremely well written satire. Have you seen "Some Mothers Do 'av 'em"? Very innocent. The man who played Frank also played Barnum on stage and he was The Phantom for years.
I have seen them, growing up! so good!
@shadyshae007 Just a wee aside Shady regarding your comment about using 'coloured'.
I'm Scottish. In winter I turn blue, some bits so much they're almost transparent.
In summer I go a tasteful shade of crimson with some parts eventually turning tan-ish.
A blow to the face brings out a palette of blues, yellows, greens(!) and black.
And yet Bill was the coloured one!
Just to clear up any misunderstandings there were and are black MPs.
_Peter McLagan, Liberal MP for Linlithgowshire, 1865-93. Bernie Grant, Labour MP for Tottenham, 1987-2000. Paul Boateng, Labour MP for Brent South, 1987-2005. Diane Abbott, Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, 1987-present_
People could learn a lot watching this about the fact we’ve always hated racism in the UK.I watched this as a kid way back and the joke was always on Eddie.😎
Check out Rising Damp... the character Rigsby.....🤣😂
Oh yes! Another show that exposes racial prejudice (as it was called at the time) with Philip always running rings around sleazy Rigsby (always fancied Philip !)
So much different than episode 1. The houses, the cast, the hair cuts.
You've watched more episodes than I ever did.
When I was a kid I thought it was garbage.
Problem was there was not much TV on in the 70s.
It was that or read a book... or play Subuteo 😂
People forget the show was about how stupid prejudice and racism was!
Jack was always the butt of the jokes and lost
Hi, The peace ambassador can't put his arm down as the joints got stuck like that. because he did not move it about.
this is hilarious we do not get laughs like this now, we might hurt someone's feelings
it is a shame that we can't watch this now. it mite show the world how bloody stupid racism is and how stupid eddie really is. i watched this when i was a teen and thought it was very funny (and it still is) but at the end of the show we always thought eddie was a complete dickhead. love your videos it fun to see how folks react to it :) x
I dont know whats funniest eddie or your reaction🤣
😂😂😂
Your reaction is hilarious every time Eddie gets what he what he deserves you made me enjoy watching you . I never watched it because in my day sad to say I knew people just like him.
Ingelburt humperdink is a crooner singer, who got Tom's Jones cast off songs, please release me & let me go,the last waltz, blue spanish eyes.born in India, about 1936,originally named Tommy or Terry dorsey.
Arnold George Dorsey. Performed under the name Gerry Dorsey before he became Englebert
@@ttuathal4509 cheers for that.
This was my fave show as a Kid , watched the pilot on our B & W TV . 3 channels & i was never bored
17:00 bill should of said he looks like a scouser who came out of a coal mine
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂 its hilarious we all laughed at each other, no one got offended because there was no offence intended. The Irish never got offended. The irish would tell jokes about their fellow countrymen
You're a lovely guy. I love your dance moves.
I think it's same time period as naacp, national advancement of coloured people,I think it is what white people thought was the correct term when black civil rights said people of colour,I'm white and heard it all the time in early 80's
People forget we had a race relations board back in the 60s
OMG I thought I'd seen every episode 😱 if I didn't know better.. definitely too much makeup 😅
Surprisingly this one was recommended by Google 🤯
UA-cam* same thing really 😂
Ahaha! I am glad you found it!
That was the whole idea about this show. The white man is thinking he is coming off better and the black man always wins. Pure class. I am a honkey. ❤️🇬🇧
Best one yet😀😀😀 . Regarding being called we are coloured . When you think about it nobody I have seen is white
only ghosts! lool
Thats the one . I like to think that those kind of things being said or thought are in the past. Some folk will say " Okay what can I call people " Find out someone's Name and use that . @@shadyshae007
You say. Wise words shady. It is the government trying to divide us which is a terrible thing. By the way love your moves!😅
Ahaha! I try sometimes.. Oh thanks, you're far too kind my love! 🥰
I love the way you react to this racist bigot. I see pain and laughter every time.
SUBBED.
{:o:O:}
Do you know in life they were best mates 😊
George Best is the GOAT
Shae, you shouldnt think its racist, it was just a joke, surly black people have a sense of humour & it was Eddie that was the joke
GBP25K in 1973 is equivalent to GBP298K end 2023 with inflation
I used an online calculator and it was not too far off! That’s crazy! 🤪
yeah it is! @@shadyshae007 Inflation or CPI averaged over 10% in 1973 but reached 25% mid 1970´s with interest rates 17% in UK - mind blowing
😂😂brilliant
What happened to episodes 4 and 5?, sequence
Wonderful. Comedy now is super woke.
Please react to the episodes "Jacko's. Wedding" the GPO connection" Power Cut" and "Ghost."❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
great show..no racism...eddie was always the fool, the black guy always had the upper hand, and thier wives got on famously..also were did the first racist remark come from in the opening scene.!! love your posts..btw.
Joan is the hero of this story
Love Rudolph Walker brilliant actor
😂😂😂
lol i grew up on this
poor eddy hes so dumb
I watch these with my teenagers we all think it’s hilarious it’s all tit for tat and Eddie is always made to look the idiot. I went to a mix race school when this was originally shown and there probably was just as many mixed races, but there were good and bad on both sides no matter what colour. My closest friends were black and the Pakistans wouldn’t have anything to do with us but things have probably changed since than. It isn’t a sin to be black, white, brown but racism is. We are all created by our Heavenly Father and His New Kingdom will have people from all nations, tribes and tongues.
how did Eddie have a lot less hair between being at home and being in the bar ?
He said “your barber did a wonderful job on my hair.” So he went for a haircut.
'Your Barbie', Bills wife trimmed it.
As an artist , you are actualy burnt umber , a brown not black , not being racist just putting things right we arnt white either
Love Thy Neighbour was a child of it's time and should be consigned to history, I'm age 58 and remember watching as a child and don't assume all white ppl enjoyed this sh*t back in the day.
Fascinating ...zzz 😴
Your spoiling the reactions by keep pausing them. Let them just play man till the end thn y can giggle ya head off as much as ya want
I admire your stamina for sitting through this show. It was on when I was a kid. It was unfunny rubbish then and it hasn’t worn well either. Great channel.
You say it's quite racist, how?
Black people thrived under conservatism back then. Whereas labour made us feel we couldn't amount to anything on our own
Just funny !!!
Conservatives have abandoned conservativsm nowadays.
