Syrian rebel leader calls for sanctions to be lifted | BBC News

  • The de facto leader of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has said the country is exhausted by war and is not a threat to its neighbours or to the West.
In an interview with the BBC in Damascus he called for sanctions on Syria to be lifted, saying “the victim and the oppressor should not be treated in the same way.”
Sharaa led the lightning offensive that toppled Bashar al-Assad's regime less than two weeks ago.
The actions of Syria's new rulers in the next few months will indicate the kind of country they want Syria to be - and the way they want to rule it.

Therefore, he is absolutely unpopular.. But with his control over Syria and the tolerance that occurred, the fears decreased somewhat..
2- Any ban will certainly generate popular resentment and unrest. Syria is the cradle of Christianity and for centuries they lived and practiced their rituals freely. However, there are instances in some areas where alcohol shops have been destroyed and closed, even though their owners are Christians.

They're not even required to peddle it to customers that might want it. If it's not banned by law, the minority that *does* wish to partake can, the majority that does not wish to partake can simply continue not doing so. From within the confines of religious belief, alcohol consumption might be immoral, but *imposing* the rules of those beliefs on those that don't share them is, by other measures, immoral. Particularly when it simply serves to criminalize a minority population for disagreeing with the majority. Pure majority decisions stripping freedoms from minorities is entirely possible under a flat democratic system, but it has also been shown many times throughout history to be a source of oppression. The typical term applied to it in western texts on the topic is "Tyranny of the majority".

Syria is poised to become the most prosperous and vibrant country in the Middle East. Syria is blessed with abundant fertile lands, water, great weather and kind people, but again, it all depends on how honest, moderate and genuine its new leaders are. If they are smart and intelligent they will adopt the path of moderation, one that will adopt democracy and freedom and allow the rights of minorities to live and worship freely without being persecuted or discriminated against. Same goes for the rights of women to be given equal opportunities. Syria is culturally rich and diverse, this is what makes the fabric of Syria's society so dynamic and vibrant. Now as confidence begins to build, though slowly but surely, many Syrian expats and refugees coming back home will bring with them their experiences and knowledge plus the capital they accrued and acquired in the Diaspora to benefit the rebuilding of Syria into a modern and progressive nation. Syria has the potential to become the leading banking hub in the region plus being the leading service industry, tourism, health and education center as well. It all depends on the path Syria takes, we all pray that Islamic radicalism and fundamentalism will not destroy the new Syria, the people of Syria have had more than enough of sufferings, pain, humiliation and wars, Syria's time is now, let the new Syria be what we're all praying, the shining star of the Middle East.
