As the original commenter implied, this is a very confusing one, and I think you did a good job. Christie quite often uses the theme of 'what you thought was the big central murder was just incidental, and the one you thought was incidental was the main one' by introducing them in the 'wrong' order for the reader. At least the denouement of this one fits well with that theme - Poirot won't let the murderer get away with it because, although removing the murderer will lead to political and economic consequences Poirot dislikes, he is repulsed by someone who would kill the dentist almost in passing as part of a plot and thinks he's above the law. "And he was a very good dentist."
For a second I wondered how it would end (if Poirot would let Mr. Blunt go or not because - as you might know - in at least one other novel Poirot actually does let the murderer walk free), but in this one I was glad he didn’t☺️
Considering how convoluted the plot was I think you did really well. I have only seen the tv version where it is pretty obvious there are two Mrs S.S as you can tell the same actor is playing her and the ‘cousin’. I have really enjoyed your Christie videos!
It’s super interesting to know that in the adaptation they did not make a big mystery out of the solution lol😂 meanwhile there’s me struggling with the book here😂 I’m super glad you like the videos❤️ I love how we’re all brought together by our passion for Agatha Christie🥰
The Suchet TV adaptations are great but they do really struggle with the problem of being able to represent double identities when actors are recognisable. There's another example I can think of, but I can't name it without spoiling the plot!
Hah I actually disagree if you're talking about the David Suchet adaptation. Perhaps my entire family and I are really unobservant and/or face blind but, as a casual viewer, I completely was not sure if it was the same person or not. The dual role playing aspect was a lot more skillfully done there than in a certain OTHER David Suchet adaptation (that someone else more obliquely references below). I think it preserved mystery. It was certainly confusing.
I think you did an extraordinary job! You nailed so many of the key elements, esp about SS being impersonated/not real. You were way over 50% of the way to solving it, and for this book especially that's an achievement.
I'm absolutely loving this series, and I'm so excited whenever a new one comes out. I also love seeing your choices of actors to cast for each of these installments. Can't wait for the next one! Keep up the amazing work!
Hihi thanks for appreciating the PowerPoint🥰 connecting the names with images makes it way easier to introduce the characters and plot especially when the storyline gets really complicated as in this one👍🏼
I listened to that one a while ago, and it was a wild ride! While I didn't actively try to solve along with it, I still felt very vindicated at the conclusion, simply because I had so disliked the murderer's personality ; ). The fact that you instinctively picked up on the whole Mrs. Saintsburry-Seal/ Mrs. Chapman fakeout, even if you could not put your finger on what exactly was wrong, that was more than I would have suspected. What a convoluted story, but worth a read/ listen despite it. Inspired by your series I attempted to solve two Agatha Christie novels, once together with my flatmate ("Dead Man's Folly", which we both caught different important clues in, but didn't truely solve it) and with my mother ("Towards Zero", which I actually solved completely! Yay!). It's a great way to spend an afternoon with friends and family, listening to an audiobook and taking notes. Thank you for the inspiration! I can really recommend "Towards Zero", since it gives you all the clues you need to solve the mystery. "Dead Man's Folly" is also really interesting, but isn't as complete on the necessary clues.
I’m so glad you gave this a shot yourself! Sounds super fun to do it with family or a roommate🙌🏼 congratulations on solving one!! It’s really not easy🙈 I’ve not heard of “towards zero” yet..I’ll definitely check it out🥰👍🏼
You could also maybe try ‘A murder is announced’, and in this case, the audiobook is probably going to give you some clearer clues than the written version.
Even after you read the conclusion out loud I’m still confused! Definitely not her best work but you did great! Thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing with us.
Again, you did very well! I remember this one being unnecessarily complicated, and you almost had me convinced :D Please continue this series, you have some of Christie's favourite tricks down, and it's delightful to watch!
I feel slightly guilty admitting that I prefer your theory over the actual solution, though the dentist trick with the second victim was a fun detail! I would love to see you tackle a Miss Marple or even another series like Father Brown, though if you're looking for another Poirot I think The ABC murders would be fantastic. Definitely checking out the rest of your content once I'm done binging the Solving playlist 😊😊
Thank you for your support!❤️ the abc murders I’ve sadly already read🙈 same goes for all miss marple books, so I can’t really tackle those anymore either..i made a video though reading and “solving” one of her short stories🤗
@@kinderegard8437 still so impressed with your ability to determine which clues mean something and which dont, and which "suspects" aren't worth spending time on. I think you did really well, all things considered! ^^
After seeing your first in this series I have binged your channel. You’re possibly the coolest ever, I hope you keep up this channel for a long long time ☺️✨☕️📚🕵🏻♂️
Love this series! I decided to read along with you, maybe the next mystery you can say which page number you're on so we can more easily follow along and we can make our guesses at the same time, so to say? Your insights helped me develop my own theory! but i also didnt quite get it haha
Huge fan of Christie, and great to see you getting into her books. This is one of my favourites but not my favourite solution. Ultimately the murderer seems to have more knowledge than the writer gives them, even though perhaps she could have done, as if she changed her mind late about a particular plot development.
The things is I’ve already read all of miss marples novels🙈🙈 so I can’t do one of these videos on those books any more, I might try to come up with a different format though to talk about Miss Marple as well!🙏🏼 + I might change it up soon and do a tommy & tuppence for example🥰
Great video 😊 I hope you make more of these in the future, they are really fun to watch. I don't know if you have already read Three act tragedy or Mrs. Mcgintys dead but I think these might be fun for a future video. One non poirot mystery recommendation that I think would make a good video is The Secret of Chimneys.
I remember reading this a long time ago and not liking it despite getting some of it as well. The Poirot episode didn't help me enjoy it, either, as the actress makes it obvious. It's all messy... I recommend Lord Edgware Dies, and if you're willing to go for a Miss Marple book, The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side. :D
Thanks for your estimation and recs! The thing is I have already read all Miss Marple books… but I might change it up in the future with a Tommy & Tuppence😉
To me, this is Christie's most muddled and ridiculous book. You did a good job with the evidence available. I think during your deducing you overlooked the fact that the dentist identifying the body was doing so from x-rays or whatever on file, so he could be in good faith but still give the wrong identity if the records were messed with. Otherwise, I think you spotted everything. My biggest problem with this book is that 3 people were murdered just to cover up bigamy and let someone stay rich. It's just so preposterous.
Interesting comment, I enjoyed the book as a read but found too many holes in the solution as it is. To make sense, you need secret police assisting the murderer, I wonder if this was an initial idea that Christie decided to drop without fully considering the implications.
Lots of Christie killers have killed multiple times for financial motives. It's hardly that unusual. And that's usually to get money, and I'd imagine that the fear of losing it again if you have grown used to having it could be an even stronger motivator. Especially if the whole reason for your (second) marriage was financial.
@@EmmettMcFly55 I'm more thinking that there MUST have been easier ways to achieve their goal than murdering multiple people and risking arrest and execution
@@RadellasReadingRoom With miss Mabelle perhaps, but Amberiotis seems like the kind of guy who would have pounced on the opportunity and Blunt would have never felt safe from exposure no matter how much money he paid - again a common reaction to blackmailers in murder mysteries. And he also seems overconfident enough to have thought he ran no real risk.
Duuuude, I obviously saw Jack’s video yesterday and the crazy thing is, like two weeks ago I had heard about Cain’s Jawbone for the first time via like this random little UA-cam video by a channel that’s all about puzzle solving, and I thought it sounded so cool and I thought it might be a cool idea to solve it together with you guys via your comments and make a little series out of it, but on all the sites I looked it was unavailable so I couldn’t get my hands on it, & now jack made a video about it already so I don’t know if it would make sense anymore…🤷🏼♀️
Have you read and Dorothy L Sayers? You might like her mysteries. The Nine Tailors is pretty good. Or The Body in the Bath and Murder Must Advertise. Strong Poison is also pretty good, but probably less good for this particular type of video.
There seems to me a glaring plot hole, which I asked my own dentist about. She agreed. You need to be an actual dentist to administer novocain properly and do dental work.
You forgot freek accident or “Act of God” in your explenation of what could have happened if you find a dead body. Basically say some one was struck by lightning or something just as unlikely.
The political machinations in this one are so weird, lol. I don't know if it reflects AC's views, or if it just is misdirection to not get us to suspect Blunt, but the whole theme of bankers ruling the world is funny.
