Sad the only original member of the Skatalites Lester Ska Sterling is in really bad health in Miami. A good friend of mine visited him over Thanksgiving.
Jamaicans were the best at taking pop and soul songs and making them uniquely original. Listen to the Alton Ellis Rocksteady material loads of American soul classics done in a Jamaican style!

I first heard this track back in the 1980s on the Island label compilation album Intensified! (sic) on which this track was titled Independent Anniversary Ska. I recognised it at the time, due to being a long time Beatles fan. Does anyone know why the original song title was not used? Copyright or royalties issues maybe? A great version though.

@@ianballantyne6892 Hey Ian the Skatalites cut this version of the Beatles hit song I think back in 1965 - 66 ... It was their entry in Jamaica's Independence Festival Song Competition that year ... so I guess the name kinda stuck! The Skatalites were exploding internationally at the time and this Beatles cover helped to catapult their ascent ..!
The name of this ska song is "I should have known better" done in 1964.....two years after Independence 1962.
Hi Ian i have bought that great Intensified album in 1980 .I bought volume one and two plus Club Ska 67,Catch this beat . I utterly utterly love love this great Legendary Skatalites track and many many others too .
As you know the Legendary Skatalites backed many many fantastic Barbados/ Jamaican Studio One and Treasure fantastic artists and so much more .
This double cd is just great showcasing their fabulous musical legacy.
Another favourite of mine on the great Foundation Ska double cd has to be Hanging Tree led by the Legendary genius prodigy Jackie Mittoo on organ. I just love the Tenor Sax playing alto saxophone playing by the Legendary Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Lester Stirling and the other fantastic Legendary Skatalites members like Johnny Dizzy Moore , Don Drummond Lloyd Knibbs Jerry Jah Haynes if my memory serves me right. I am sure there is another Skatalites muscian that i am kicking myself to remember.

No. As far as I know this version came out in '65 and that of the Beatles in '64.
