The other day, someone had a *”quit looking at my pedals, and go meet people”* sticker on their board. Never felt so personally attacked, yet so humored.

I agree on this one. But they can tell the difference if you're out of tune or you're having an off night and that can happen with any gear you have.😊

If Springsteen, grabbed an off the rack 399.00 Squier Tele and played his regular show in a mix with seven musicians in front of a screaming arena, not a single person will be able to hear a difference…

I've seen many an awesome player bring a Squire on stage. See Allman Brothers Jack Pearson, the cheaper the Squier, the more he loves them. Seriously check out some of his youtube stuff, he proves it aint the gear it's the player and the hands.

I agree. I think the connection between musicians and their instruments is something that’s really hard to pin down. You can buy an expensive guitar and never gel with it, you can buy a cheap guitar and sometimes something magic happens. Who knows why things are the way they are. It never makes any sense other than how you feel when you play.

This is very true, but to be honest, it’s much more important to impress the Normies than it is to impress other musicians. Guitarists especially can be pretentious as fuck.

Gear is either good or it's not good. Price doesn't necessarily correlate with quality.
There exists inexpensive gear that play and sound great, and there exists expensive gear that do not play and sound that great.
It's up to the player to know the difference.
High price doesn't always equal good, or that you'll like it.
Low price doesn't always equal bad, or low quality.
In all cases judge with your ears, not with your pocketbook or your ego.

I’m not so sure that a musicians job is to make bad gear sound good. Another perspective is that a musicians job is to choose gear that allows them to play their best and deliver a great performance. I agree that each player has their own needs when it comes to what gear is within acceptable tolerances. I think it has more to do with familiarity than it does things like cost or quality. In that sense, the gear doesn’t matter to the audience as long as it doesn’t affect the performers ability to perform. I completely agree that it’s the musicians responsibility to figure that out and the audience isn’t supposed to be involved in that process.

The guitar is what my hands are on so the way it plays, and feels is most important to perform at my best. The average audience doesn’t know or care what your rig is, they want you to play good songs, play them well and put on a good show.

So, so true. I play a Squier CV having a Fender. For my audience which consists of one person only does not now, care a.s.o.. but if she likes the music that matters for me. I have a Fender Hendrix just for emotional reason but like the CV more also because of emotion. I sold my defect Bullet sadly, my first electric guitar and even defect to a price I did not expect the hight he paid. And I get my very last pedal in a few hours. It‘s 2 a.m. now where I live. This brings all to an end and it brings it to the point what bullshit I did with all my gear. it is a Mosky clone and some parody from JHS to the real Klon was the reason. The video was funny but made for me a lot of sense retrospective.

Ever seen Jason Isbell? Half the fun (for me) is all the gear on stage and different amazing guitars on every song. But you’re right, my non-musician wife did not care about that and I’m sure it is way more fun for Jason and the band to have the gear to play every night than it is for me to see and hear it.

  • @rayschoch5882

Thanks for this, Phil. I have multiple guitars, and have had many others that I sold or traded away. They have all been low-end instruments, and I don't apologize for that. Sometimes, I spend more on upgrades than I do on the guitar. Other times, I haven't touched the stock setup from the factory. I don't care what the pedigree of the guitar, or the amp, or the pedal(s) might be. If it sounds good to me, that's all that counts.

  • @daddio307
    @daddio307 2 місяці тому

My ideal gear review channel would have a live band. They would play the same passages from a song, but the guitarist would change out guitars or pedals but EVERYTHING else would be the same. Would most people really be able to tell the difference? Playing something by itself in a silent room is one thing, but will that Squier or that Fender REALLY sound that different in that setting?? I wonder......
