Recently sold off a few pieces and went after a 114270. Have always liked it, but never seen in the metal. Once it arrived, I initially thought it was too small. Had been wearing a Doxa Sub 300 and Sinn UX for a couple years now. But like many have told me, just keep wearing the Explorer for a few days and see what happens. Well after a few days, I was totally smitten by this piece. By far the most comfortable watch I've ever worn. Simple, and elegant, but no flash. The charm of it really comes out after a few days of bonding. I know, sounds odd to speak of it this way, but there is no doubt I am not the only one that has experienced this. I 100% agree, what else do you need once you've gotten this piece? I'm ready to sell off the remaining few other watches. It's truly that good. It really is. Great video. Thank you.
I think most watch enthusiasts have exactly the same experience when they get an Explorer 36 on their hands. It grows on you really quickly.
Cheers Chris🙋🏻♂️🍷
Never have understood how someone could “bond” with a watch that has been on someone else’s wrist (and told someone else’s life story) for the last 30 years. I mean if it belonged to a family member like a grandfather or father, then I would completely understand. But a strangers watch? I just don’t get it. To each their own I guess.
Depends on whether you are bonding with the previous owner or the watch itself. Just think of yourself as the new custodian.
Only have 2 watches I fan boy over the Casio 5600 and the Rolex Explorer 39. Pure class man congratulations.
Thx. Cheers 🥂
“Fan boy” is not a verb.
That's a fantastic collection. Best types if watches in their category. Have you considered a diver?
I have a Casio 5000u, seiko skx013, 1950s Omega seamaster and a Glashutte Original SeaQ 39.5 blue (my favorite). A Explorer 1 is the next watch on my list. It's perfection
Nice video, thanks. I came here from your SARB033 vid, which I just took out of a drawer after nearly a decade and am now thoroughly appreciating it. It's really funny, in my dozen years of watch enthusiasm, I've owned 2 114270's and a 214270 m2 but none of them lasted in my collection. I kept choosing my 2006 116200 DJ over the Expy's, and still do. I also had a 14060M which I never bonded with either. But I got a 16610 a couple years ago, and that thing's never going anywhere! I don't even like dive watches, I prefer simple, fixed bezel watches. But there's something about the 16610 that I'm so drawn to, despite its cliche popularity. I don't care how many might be out in the wild, or that it might be a go-to watch purchase for anyone who's had a bit of luck or success. The thing's just damn beautiful! I'm rambling a bit, sorry.
Thx for the story. Funny how different we watch guys are. I for one find the 114270 as just a perfect watch. From dimensions to fit and look. You had two but did not stick with you 😂. Happy you found one that you bonded with.
At the end of the day, you can buy a 200k vintage Sub, it it does not fit you, you not gonna keep it.
Enjoy that 16610, truly is a special one. Seen one a few weeks ago, on a hand of a Non-Enthusiast😂😂. He had no idea what he had. He said it’s a Rolex Diver . That’s all he knew.
😂.
Cheers to you and thx for your time.
PS. Also happy your SARB033 is back to be enjoyed 🍷🙋🏻♂️
I had the new one and I liked it a lot. I got rid of it
Because I realized I wanted this one. 20mm strap and a little more proportional to my end. One of my favs.
Wow, usually people don’t downgrade, but I totally understand why, this watch is special. 🙋🏻♂️
On the list for the new 36mm.... would you say its a good idea to get the new watch over the older models?
(AR coating, elegant solid bracelet, new movement, and the AD experience, plus the warranty and the fact that i would be wearing a brand new watch and start the journey with it - scratches and all.... the more the better!)..
There is something great about the older models too
Still on the list?
@@phillipbanks2647 nope... to be honest I've gone off rolex. I think I'm growing in my tastes...I have an IWC Mark xvi now - that's my Explorer in a way..... I'm loving things like Cartier Tortue and certain others, but rolex no longer interests me... at least at the moment anyway. These things can change
Pure class.
Salut frate 🍷
Nothing like the explorer one of the best watches period. I'm coincidentally wearing the Neptune you sold me now. I wear a smaller watch quite a bit though I love my black bay 36 and my Sinn 556A they are my "explorer" type watches as well as the Seiko baby alpinist. Wear it in good health.
My brother 🙋🏻♂️🍷
Great review of a grail.
Love my SARB too.
Great vid.
Thank you 🙏🏽🙋🏻♂️
I like the Rolex 114270 but love the 1016 but for now I own a Zeno ZEX homage which is very close to being a Rolex.
You also have the Serica Commando, a serious contender daily piece 🤘🏻
I learned about watches today, seriously. With my meat slab wrist (7.75), I would need the 39. I would probably be in a hurry to find one if it weren't for my gorgeous Longines Conquest black dial. Great review Uncle Leo!
Thx bro. Keep the Conquest, the 39mm are insane in prices at this time but they will come down eventually 🍷🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️
Nice watch …l 39 mm takes it
No it isn’t. Get an Incipio 8 plus a life.
Not at 36mm.
Not at 36?
This is the only Rolex I would consider. it's in a class of it own. It would be a perfect one watch collection for me.
I’ve had my 39mm Explorer for a year now and absolutely love it. No one really knows what it is, in general. Most guys are looking for a sub, so the Explorer flies under the radar.
I think it’s the tool design, great legibility and without the bling.
Cheers 🙋🏻♂️🍷
Now I know what Christopher Walken thinks of the Explorer!
I dread to think exactly where he has been keeping the watch though...🥵😱😲🫣
Your BB58 looks great on that Hirsch rubber strap. I had my BB58 on a black rubber tropic strap all summer. I just picked up a new 124270 Explorer from my AD a week ago and it has already become my favorite watch of all time. Effortless to wear, incredibly legible, robust, flies under the radar screen and beautifully made. It is a keeper, as is my BB58.
That great man. Enjoy that new Piece. And yes the BB58 is a stunner also 🙋🏻♂️
Awesome two watch collection! How long did you have to wait for your Explorer? Is that your first Rolex?
@@comeonman7423 Thank you. The 124270 is my 3rd Rolex. I had to wait almost a year since asking my AD for one. It was worth the wait!
Very nice! I think the Explorer 1 is probably the most versatile and timeless Rolex. Did you consider the OP36 Black dial?
@@comeonman7423 I agree with you re: the Explorer. It is my favorite watch. I also considered an OP 36 but my AD can't get them.
I had a 214270 from 2019 and totally loved it. It was a scratch magnet though and in evening artificial light I found it not easy to see. But it was a magnificent watch. One day I lost my brain and decided to sell it. What a bad decision that was. Yes I made a ton of money on it and yes I felt good, for about a week. Then I regretted it but by that time it was discontinued and the prices went skywards. I gave up with the Rolex AD network and the company policy of never making enough watches, seemingly not an issue for Omega. I switched to Tudor. Have the BB58 925. Love it but really I just want another Rolex.
Horrible story 😂😂😂😂. The 925 is a beautiful piece but at end of day, if it’s not 100% what you want it’s not gonna fulfill the want for the One.
Cheers to you 🙋🏻♂️🍷
I have the same 114270 and 💯 agree that it’s just right at 36mm and it’s proportionally even better than the current 36, 124270! IMHO anyway.
@@RSSpec I agree. I just saw the new 36. Seems so round🪩. I do like the lit 🔥 369 but mine is just so awesome with its vintage clasp 👍🏻🤌
Great video my man, I love mine and it’s without a doubt an heirloom piece for me. Just like you I love how this is an under the radar Rolex!
Cheers brother 🍷🙋🏻♂️
Exactly. What a point to have another watch when you have this one. That’s why I’m selling my collection piece by piece. I always come back to this phenomenal minimalist gem.
Absolutely. Cheers to you 🙋🏻♂️🍷
The 36mm looks absolutely perfect on your wrist. The Exp I has peaked my interest again - I lost interest with the 39mm because the proportions seemed off IMO. The classic dimensions exude class. Nice review 👌
Thank you sir. Yes the 39 has some design differences. The 36 for me is just perfect 👍🏻
Cheers to yo 🙋🏻♂️🍷
Watching you having this watch‘s crown left unscrewed makes me sad
Got the call to say my Explorer 40 has arrived
...... So will have to give you my initial thoughts
Good for you. 🙋🏻♂️🤘🏻🍻
I really love this watch. The history behind it, the elegance of it...the simplicity. Bling makes me nautious...no bling here at all (the 2T though i cant stand) The size thing, its just down to personal taste, some people like larger watches, some people like more traditional sized watches...like me. Your lucky to have this...do youself a favour and hold onto it...amazing
Thank you Sir 🙋🏻♂️🍷
Explorer... Simplicity as worn by British author Ian Fleming and British Zoologist Sir David Attenborough
This watch is so beautiful 🥹
Absolutely agree with you my friend 👍 EX1 is a best Rolex for me too 👌🏆
Salut my man V 🤘🏻🙋🏻♂️🍷
I love the steel reef on the fly expanding link for my Explorer 2 16570 with this same bracelet clasp. It in effect exactly the same set up that my Explorer 1 214270 has and needs zero tools to get those extra few mm most of us might need.
Big congrats! Wear the Explorer in good health!
Thank you.
Cheers 🥃
Beautiful watch! One of my all time favorites! I hope to be blessed to get one someday! Thanks for the video!
Yeah the pre-ceramic Sub and the new 41mm (it's really 40.5mm) are way better on the wrist than the Super case Subs. I'll say it.... Super case Submariners SUCK!!! I hate that reference. My biggest regret is buying it after a few months of buying. I really tried to like it and wear it. I only wore that watch a few months. I just couldn't connect with it. I was more than happy to get rid of it, and got myself a 5513. I still want the new 41mm no date or a 14060 once they go down in price. Lucky for me I got the call for a new Explorer 36mm 2021. It's been my everyday watch since
5513 is a gem 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 enjoy
214270 MK2 is the best Explorer Rolex has made
Very Good Video. Especially wine part. You add extra taste to it :). I'm also explorer 36mm owner, its a class on its own at stealth mode.
🍷🙋🏻♂️
I can never understand why people make such a deal out of full numbered lume. I have always been able to see the time. If I have problems, a simple flick of the cellphone gets me all the info I need.
Isn’t that the truth 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼🙋🏻♂️🍷
Real explorer will always be 36 mm. I am rocking it on my 7inch wrist just fine. Just classy..
🙋🏻♂️🍷
I agree. It's perfect.
I learned about watches today, seriously. With my meat slab wrist (7.75), I would need the 39. I would probably be in a hurry to find one if it weren't for my gorgeous Longines Conquest black dial. Great review Uncle Leo!
I see a small gap between your solid end link and the watch case. Is this gap growing in size due to the age of watch?
You made me pick it up and go under a light and move the endlinks 😂😂😂. No gap, no movement 🙋🏻♂️🍷
@@LeoVinteler that’s good. Must be the shadow then. Sorry for the alarm bells! Mine has a tiny gap with very small movement, just enough to notice it. But it’s super minor.
@@explorerjlc1743 no bother. Happy you enjoying one also 🙋🏻♂️
@@LeoVinteler thanks. Wish mine had 0 gap/movement like yours though!
Cheers.
I admire and appreciate Rolex to a point. I think the resentment from the watch community is directed towards the non watch people who just have a Rolex and don't even know the model or appreciate their own privilege. ('Hey, nice DateJust.' 'Nice what?') and the shady backdoor AD practices are a turn off.
That said, I don't feel attracted to most models, nor can I afford them or desire to save up for one. The only one I've been in love with is a simple vintage DateJust with any sort of dial with character. (Blue, Grey, Linen etc and fluted 2 tone) to rock it on leather as I can do without those rattly old stretched bracelets with stamped clasps). I want to get a birthyear in a few years. If prices continue to fall back down to earth, it might even be possible for my 40th. I'm not rich, I just save on the side for my grails. And as I just got my truest grail, BB58, I'm all 'watched out' and satisfied for the next 3-5 years easily.
Explorers are cool, but just a bit too sterile for me. I want something with a bit more pop. Not for anyone else, just for me, as I gaze at my wrist a hundred times a day without even registering the time 😁.
I think the :Hey nice Sub!
It’s a Rolex! Response has happened to most of us 😂😂😂. Most Rolex owners are about being seen, not all of them tho.
Allot of collectors have a sub, I talk to them all the time, and they enjoy and know all the details about their pieces.
Hope you get yours and enjoy the heck out of it.
Cheers 🍷
@@LeoVinteler most that I encounter are on wrists of docs/residents at work, (men and women). I haven't really met someone who was flexing or arrogant though. Some are enthusiasts to an extent that I could have a conversation with. Many it was just a nice watch but they weren't snobby or flashy about anything.
I do spot a lot of other brands, ranges and styles at work that lead to fun interactions. I'll always compliment, and usually leads to a fun interaction or a new work buddy. But yeah, it's often the Rolex people that you end up relating to the least. My true fave, though is someone with a daily'ed platinum DayDate, green roman+handset, ice blue dial. It's pretty understated, and all scuffed up, chill owner. And I LOVE IT.
I always loved the curved flanks on Rolexes and how they feel to the touch. Their case designs are top notch. Well, maybe except the maxi cases...
Correct, except the Super/Maxi Case 😂😂😂. Cheers 🙋🏻♂️🍷
Thank you for your time 🤘🏻
Awesome review. Really enjoyed this. I'm torn between this (114270) and the new 36mm reference, my main gripe for the new one would be the larger numerals, and the ridiculous clasp and even that 1mm of extra thickness. I'm still up in the air about the 20mm vs 19mm bracelet.
Also the new one is a bit thicker and heavier, but the lume is better, has AR coating on the crystal and perhaps a better more accurate movement. I would still pick mine.
Good luck 😂😂
@@LeoVinteler yes the case thickness may be the biggest deal breaker. I have tried in the new one, and then it didn't seem too bad, but I was like a kid in a candy store and not thinking straight. I have never seen or tried a 114270 or 14270 for that matter.
Great review 😊
Thank you 🙏🏽
You’ve got great style, Leo! I recently got a BB58 blue & really like it; it’s taken over my wrist. I actually looked at an Explorer in ‘04 when I was shopping for my first nice watch. I went with a TAG 2000 auto, mainly because of price. It’s been a great watch (I still have it) but I’ve been kicking myself ever since! Cheers!
😂😂😂. The Tag 2000 is a cool piece Chris. You can always find a 36 Explorer.🙋🏻♂️🍷
I’ve owned one, it’s a boring watch. The bracelet is jangly and not worth the dough.
It’s definitely boring, can’t disagree there, but I still really enjoy the wearable bracelet and the lack of weight on the wrist.
Its not 'boring'. Its perfection. Perfection is not boring. Its what you get when you remove all the glitters and fluff.
