Drinking alcohol was safer than drinking water. Most serfs had several children to help in the fields, so the women were frequently pregnant, and if I am remembering correctly children weren't given names till they were several years old. Lead poisoning through food carried on for hundreds of years. It was one of the first metals used for canning.
Not having the proper way to get rid of solid waste.. People would shit in a bucket and throw it in the streets....no wonder their life expectancy was low.
That's just being nasty just shit in the bucket and toss it out the window completely disgusting sine other sivilisations much older had ways to deal with dump
That only happened in certain areas. Not most. Most of the time it was buried or collected to be used for tanning (dog shit was mostly used but sometimes human shit was used), composting, etc...
This was common in large cities, where there weren’t any places not-cobbled with stone (to bury waste, as some have stated) - however, many streets were made with a ‘gutter’ running down the middle, where most people (women, you guessed it) emptied their pots and buckets. On days of heavy rain, the gutters would become literal streams of waste flowing through the city. And let’s get into the next worst part: the SMELLS of the waste comingling with the odors of unwashed bodies in clothes worn for weeks and months (‘bathing’ was considered bad for the health, believe it or not)! Nope. Couldn’t do it.
The modern era of sanitation and actual medicine is the best time to be alive. And even with all that I am recovering from a leg infection that would have gone septic without antiseptic
Historic Records contain no cases of trial by ordeal after 1219, when Henry III recognized its abolition. Metatron has debunked all of these on his UA-cam.
Rye bread is so often made with caraway which is, indeed, absolutely disgusting. Rye bread with out added nonsense is my favorite 🙂 Another fun video, Mrlboyd! Thank you 😊🧡
I like caraway seeds just because it's unique and rarely used. I only used it once in a high-end restaurant for a marinated red cabbage salad. I'm just glad to see caraway seeds mentioned, even as nonsense. 😁😁
The "dark ages" span anywhere between 500-1000yrs depending on who u ask and which of the 3 periods ur defining. The medieval age for england that most folks really know (Renaissance festivals etc..) can be definded from 1066-1450ish. Also, it spans many cultures/countries. It wasnt the same in one country/city/culture from another so this video is a stereotype. There is neuance to this, like everything. And the fact that 'they were dirty, didnt bathe, ate bad food, etc ..' is a complete falsehood, ya in some areas that was the case but not the norm. Even the poor, farmers, surfs ate very good. One could even argue they ate better then we do today cuz they rnt eating all this processed crap like we do. (sry for my rant, ill stop typing, i could keep going cuz this video is really annoying me due to the falsehoods it is spewings)
Totally. Work was dirty and muddy and they could have some malpractice about sanitation but they were not dirty disgusting slobs like the stereotype presented (and adopted). Also diseases like smallpox or measle have nothing to do with cleanliness and can't be avoided without vaccination.
I watched this a second time with the volume down and just watching your face made it the best! Thank you for the information...and mostly for lighting my face with a smile that didn't go away for quite a while!
Its why a lot of muslim people didnt die in that same era. It was because of their faith dictating that they perform the purification ritual "WUDU" before every prayer. WUDU requires the practitioner to wash their hands, arms, feet and face.
Which is where alot of the mystical and magical beliefs about the Muslims being demonic or witches because they weren't affected by illness as bad as everywhere else.
Not eating pig helps too, it is the meat most likely to have parasites if not cooked properly. IMO religious knowledge is an instruction manual to have a civilization and successful society, to have knowledge like this the society must develop writing to pass information unchanged through time.
1 in 5 women died in childbirth, and if by some miracle the mother survived, the chances that the child would die before the age of 5, is 1 in 3. But by the time that child was 5, the mother would have been pregnant at least 4 more times, and the chances that she died in one of these instances of childbirth is also very high. Like you said, how did we ever make it this far as a species?
I have MS and suffer extreme ‘overheating’ episodes, so, for me, an over warm Spring season (without air conditioning) could be the death of me. If I even survived having MS in the first place…
We only progressed during the 1800’s with science while they still were in the dark ages one thing is people back then were better dreamers then we are today we act is if we have intelligence but in reality we don’t we still use science and math form ancient times with basic physics they created everything we have while we constantly destroy everything they gave us. One crazy fact ancient Greeks teeth are fully intact after thousands of yrs because they didn’t eat foods with sugar at all yes natural sugar but not foods with refined sugar or processed foods. I actually think humans would benefit more if they had another dark age which would be possible easily with solar flare from the sun which is kinda bound to happen at some point. The ultimate dark age will when the earth ends at some point
so we ignoring the fact that humans immune system has developed significantly from the dark ages to now so if you just pluck me from this timeline and drop me in the dark ages not only will i survive i will be worshiped as a god for the knowledge i have from this period
Keep in mind, his video mostly based on Medieval West Europe. Not all counties at this period were alike: some nicer, some worst and anything in between. For example, at the same time Eastern Europe, Islamic World and South Asia were prosperous. The scholars of Islamic Golden Age literally preserved European knowledge and reintroduced them centauries later. The fact that all of us keep using Arabic-based number system is a simplest prove.
always knew the middle ages were awful but didn't know about the lead poisoning issue though maybe should have since it's been well known lead poisoning was a factor in the decline of the roman empire⚛😀😀
one in five。。I will never get pregnant😂never fail to surprise me,but yeah still some countries like Iran women have to speak about whether it is possible to give birth in hospital or not,bcz some won't agree and that before marriage ,and talking About arranger marriage ....was surprise to learn that from my Iranian friends.
oh , did the 1800's have the black death? 1 in 4 died. Slavery was rampant back then too. Thieves and bandits ran all over. Worldwide food shortages and people starving to death en mass. So what pray tell is worse in the 1800? A war or two? The end of slavery worldwide (thank you white, European, Christians!!! ) Or was it the beginning of real modern medicine that's created a worldwide boon in human life....pls look at human population over the centuries and you'll see what I mean Sorry.....I just can't comprehend your logic.

“Remembering,” sounds like you were there. Are you immortal?
(Sarcasm)
Ahhh, yes...the good 'old days.
Even in the early 1900's they didn't name kids until they were about 5 because they died so often.
Not having the proper way to get rid of solid waste.. People would shit in a bucket and throw it in the streets....no wonder their life expectancy was low.
Didn't have more like just lazy could easily bury the shii deep in dirt

I was just watching Metatron earlier 😆 Yes, he's very knowledgeable and very thorough with his research.
Arrives in 31 BC "Yo this shit be bussin." "Quid dicis?"
I would also recommend a channel called Shadiversity, which talks about all things medieval.

Probably because other humans outside medieval Europe weren't as stupid.
The numbers are wrong.
I've always loved dancing, and ergot played no part in it.
Of course...The Buebonic Plague
Rye bread rules !!!
Dude. Us Finnish people LOVE rye bread. It is next to being a national delight.
Nobody cares

Oh god, don't come to the UK 😂
Average age is deceiving due to so much infant death, if you made it to adulthood you would most likely to live to be late 50's and into your 60's
Indoor plumbing.. electronic remotes..germs
Im not able to get by today shiz let alone being in a time where beheadings and swords slashes were very common
I think that I could survive, but I wouldn't be happy with it at all. I could be wrong, of course.
lead pipes drove them mad
I agree, rye bread is disgusting
Just DAMN...
Ye Olde English is like if you combined scottish and new english together.
even if the household was clean..it was getting sick and not having medicine to cure it

Not liking rye bread = skill issue
Lol you do look very clean
Just take some Pepto-Bismol. 🤔
i mean i could last a day but yea
If you went back in time and were able to survive having modern knowledge you could take over the world.

GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! curious
Just a few nuclear bombs dropped here and there and we are back in the dark ages (at least for those that did not get radiated)

Yep, all because what water the viaduct brought, all ran through led piping directly into homes and bathhouses.
Just don't live in the city or the north

Seriously... go try to talk to a farmer on the Pennine trail in Yorkshire!
They speak English, yet you cannot understand it.
I got pretty good at it reading Herriot. At least understanding it.
One versed in the science s could go back and be a God
so your saying with the knowledge you have you wont be able to survive ?
Wonderful ! I love it for Women😮,what a better world Apple eaters😅😂
Why am I watching this? Oh, I'm not

I can’t stand the smell of rye bread, much less the taste.
