- Playing off the correct tee box is SO important! Golf is hard enough, why would you make it even harder by playing from the wrong tees? Playing from where you should be can completely transform your game.
Of course there are some times where you might want to play from a different tee box, but you should know when and where to move up and back. I'm here to help!

I'm 67 and started playing the senior tees last year. The hurt my pride suffered was soon replaced by the joy of a few rounds in the 80's. The temptation to move back to the middle tees never returned. Golf is fun!

Im am 69 and play off the white tees. If i hit a good drive,im really happy if i reach 200metres or more,but satisfied if i reach 160+. More importantly is my shot at the green from 130meters or closer trying to land on the green as close to the pin as possible. Then there's the putting which can ruin a good drive and fairway shot. So my short game matters more to me. Great advice Paige. Love your game and your advice on how to enjoy better golf.

If you are a beginner or 50 and over go to the front tree unless your drives go over 230. I see so many at the course play from the back and hit it 150 yards. You wonder why go takes over 5 hours.
I normally play the White Tees but have periodically played the Red Tees. It is interesting to see how different the hole plays and that you use different clubs. I have played making up 18 par three holes at my home course when I wanted to work on my shorter clubs.
My course has gold, blue, green, white, red. I mostly play from the whites because the guys im playing with perfer whites. I rather play on same tee speed it up. I work maintenance golf course and drives me nuts watching multiple people play from different tees. I see people all time today 4 some players played 2 from white, 1 from green, 1 playing blues. If you cant 3 shot par 5 then you should play from tee you can hit par 5 in 3 hits.
Re: which tee box to play...Made me think back to the first time I played TPC Sawgrass Stadium course. It was the Monday after Fred Couples had won...I believe '92? anyway we had two foursomes and we get to the first tee and the starter asks us to gather round so he can talk to us. He says well, the rough only had an eighth of an inch taken off and the greens were just recut so they are still rolling at Sunday tournament speed of 13, so the course has teeth today, please help each other watch your shots as in the rough it'll be hard to find. he then asked what everyone's handicaps were and said everybody needs to play from the whites which have been moved up today, except you (he pointed at me), he said You can play the blues (I was a 3 or 4 at the time) and everyone else were bogey or higher. What a cool course, you better bring your A short game, which I had that day...shot 79 from the tips including a 3 putt bogie at 17. I had visions of shooting par when I was at 16 tee but stumbled in with double, bogie and double.
I play 5900 to 6500 depending. I’m currently playing whites on my course at 6200 total yards. I’m a 90-100 aka 24 handicap, just started playing at 51 years old first year. My course goes tips, blue, white, green. I’ll play back on blues with the shorter par 3’s sometimes. I base it off my scratch golfer buddy I play with. Where he drives too, if I can match his drive that’s where I tee up. If he plays tips or blues I’ll play tees where my ball comes even to him off the drive. I almost broke into 80’s but ganked one off the 18th feeling the pressure. Such an awesome sport/game. Cant get enough of it. Neat videos thanks for making them. Basics are so important and I am trying to soak up everyone’s take. So thanks for putting it out there.

I absolutely love playing off the front tees. Our course is short, it's short for me off the backs at only 6000 yards, but we have so many long par 3s. 200, 198, 188, 220, 120. When you play off the reds they come down to 175, 180, 140, 180 and 110, just presents a different challenge and means I'm not hitting 6 irons/hybrids in all the time. I need to actually get out on my own and play the reds soon as I haven't done it for a while, because you're so right about learning to score. I'm a crap golfer really but I was in a situation the other day, par after the first 7 holes and I could feel my brain going... had a bad back 9 and the back 9 is so easy compared to the front.
I normally play from the whites as an 18 handicap. We played at a tough course where my 73 year old dad can’t clear the creek on the first tee so we moved up to the gold (black, blue, white, gold, red) for that round. I was 2 over at the turn and wound up with an 83 on a course I’m happy with breaking 100 on. It does make a difference.
I play with 4 friends, we have been playing for nearly a decade. Three of us are 62, and the younger is 53 or 54. At 60 we could have moved up to the senior tees but we have stayed back at the men’s tees and now the younger guy is winning more. I’m saying the 62 year olds should move up but the younger is whining about us moving up.

No such thing as mens tees. Tees are handicap based.
My friends and foursome are almost identical in age to your group. The three of us over 60 moved up to the gold. The 55 year old has opted to stay back at the whites. It works out good. We live and play various courses in Myrtle Beach in which it's always busy and playing two different boxes hasn't slowed up play for us or anybody behind us. I was a little reluctant to do that but it's worked out well. If you can get $5 off of a meal or yards closer to the hole because of our age, take it man. We've earned it. Let the young buck whine😅

I play the golf courses like Ben Hogan use too. I go back to the furthest tee box and go to the very back of the tee box. I then put by right foot in the very back of the tee box touching the fairway grass in the back of the tee. I then tee it up. I play the flower boxes. I also bs a lot.

I googled this once and found an article suggesting you multiply your 5iron distance (carry) by 36 to give you a yardage and then pick the tees that are closest to that yardage. Needless to say I don't do that because we all play off whites which on our course is 6,895 about 400yds to long for me based on the calculation. My handicap ranges from 2-4 during the season but I think I could break 70 from the yellow tees.

I play with some guys that insist on playing the "senior tees" even though they still have good distance. I saw the best description for the tees you should use, your honest 5 iron distance times 36 or your honest driver distance times 28. That gives you the yardage you should be playing.
I would love to play a nice, weedless course like this. Anyway, I am 62 years old now and decided to start playing one back from the men's white tees and have much more fun shooting scores of 77 to 83. The male pride will have guys that cannot drive the ball 200 yards trying to hit from the back tees as you demonstrated. And sometimes I come across very strong, young men playing the white tees. Golf can be a bit expensive at times, so why not enjoy the four or five hours out there. Hit the driving range and check your distance first, then decide.

Tee box selection is the most critical factor in game enjoyment and challenge. Most players, including myself, can't hit the ball more than 225 off the tee and those people should never play tees much more than 6,000 yards. I have a system I use before every round to choose my tees. Would be happy to share it with Paige's fans.

I’ve had the most fun playing from the front tees.
I remember working at a course when I was in high school. Almost every single group would play from the back tees and then proceed to chunk it about 20 feet or duff it into the woods and people wonder why rounds take so long lol. I'd say 90% of groups should be playing way up.
Even the greatest of players play from the tips. It really doesn’t matter what the yardages are for that specific hole… whether it be a long or short hole… scores depends on overall management and purely luck! ❤

Hi Paige, I play 150 and in. Since that is where accuracy must be considered. Anyone can flog a mallet from a box but what is the difference and best golf shots are always 150 yards to the pin that’s where Major Championships are Won!!!
Ive been playing for a while so I typically play from the tips or mens tees, it's shocking how many new and terrible players feel obligated to play those tees with me despite me telling them they don't have to. Seriously people, literally nobody cares what tee you play so put your ego aside and you'll enjoy yourselves a lot more and won't be holding everyone back by playing from the tips and duffing it 20 yards in front of you every time.

Played the whites last evening (amateur or middle tees) it was nice hitting irons into the par 5s and having short irons into most greens, but, still shot the same. Kinda in a weird way, felt guilty hitting a 7 iron into a par 5. I don’t even hit it far compared to some people as I’m old AF now, but I hit them straight and solid. So, 🤷♂️ wtf lol

It's easy at my golf course. Blue is expert or pro, white men's tees, red women's tees weather you're a pro or not, and our golf course even has junior tees.

When hitting into the wind or uphill you need the largest driver you can swing.
How can you tell if your using the wrong lengths for your irons. I use women’s flex shafts because they’re lighter for me because both of my wrist are fused from the rheumatoid arthritis. I bend more in my knees causing me to shank or top it because I bounce up too much.
Pace of play is a big deal for me. I see these hacks on the tips shanking it and hitting multiple tee shots. It’s ridiculous how many “golfers” do this and slow down everything.

The usga say to take what you carry your 5 iron and times by 36. So for me i carry 5 170x36 comes to around 6200 yds
That’s interesting. I hit my 5 iron 170 and that’s exactly where my white tees are 6200. Your formula says it’d be 6120 awesome

Just to show how even from the middle tees will not guarantee a better score. For a weekend golfer like me that can't practice much, and don't have the distance and accuracy off the drive the middle tees work fine for me.
I'm 65. I'm a +2. Mainly because I play every day and from the tips. If the tips are a 76 and shoot 74. Should I play the front tees and finally shoot my age?
If you start on the tips and it isn't working, can you change tee boxes mid game?

I'm 80 you know which tees I use.
Honestly if it is a a slow day for the course, and you don't care about your score or want to get better; longest tees give you more shots, more experience, more practice to get better with.
Even if you're out with your friends and you have a keg on one cart and clubs on the other.
As long as it’s a slow day! I’m big on pace of play.
I play tee boxes where the overall length is no more than 6500 yards as a general rule.

Top tips as always Paige. I play off the black box just to challenge myself, and I play a 30 shot challenge over 9 holes. Furthest I’ve got with 30 shots is teeing off on the 8th hole.
