You ask what is the attraction in Dumaguete? Then you conclude not understanding why so many ex pats are there...
I was in Dumaguete several months only, so I don't claim to know all the ends and outs within or around the city, however, the things I liked in Dumaguete is what I'm getting away from in the big city.
Having lived in Southern California near Los Angeles I can tell you that I no longer want anything the big city has to offer. Including, but not limited to: Hollywood, professional sports such as the NFL, NBA, Disneyland, world largest zoos, 12 lane highways, the crime and expense to live there......
To pinpoint what I liked in Dumaguete:
1. Very cheap to live there: I could eat for a buck fifty, even got a senior discount. For dinner I could pick any restaurant on the blvd and eat for less than ten bucks... In California you can't even buy a burrito for less than ten bucks, and is not a complete dinner....
2. Crime: I often walked at night in Dumaguete, I never felt the presence of danger... In Los Angeles you can't even stop in your car at a gas station a night for fear you'll be held up....
3. Traffic: you mentioned Dumaguete was very busy, etc... Try driving to the LA airport and be stuck in traffic even with 6 lanes going in one direction, 6 lanes going the opposite direction...
4. Rent: I had an apartment 10 minutes walk from the Robinson's mall, paid $260 per month, fully furnished, free wifi, HBO, back up generator, no brown or black out. In Southern California you'll pay as much as $1000.00 US for ONE room. And is not furnished.....
5. Seniors are respected in Dumaguete as the rest of the Philippines... In California seniors are a burden.
6. Dumaguete is centralized within the PI so you can fly north or south very cheap....
7. Dating: The townspeople are always eager to introduce you to some lady if you're interested in meeting someone....
If you found nothing to do, or nothing that attracted you in Dumaguete maybe you're not ready to retire and enjoy a low cost, low key, peaceful lifestyle with friendly townspeople.....
Finally, if you want to enjoy a slightly different scenery around Dumaguete, there're several tourist spots and resorts to visit within 30 minutes of downtown....
I lived in Dumaguete for a while in 2016-2017... It was so boring that I was frequently catching the ferry to Cebu, so I ended up moving there. I look at Dumaguete as an old folks home.
I hear you Jason. Although I also find Cebu restrictive. I'm missing culture, art and galleries and looking for a Fiilipino city that would provide that.
Wow you are right I know some foreigners that lived on Bantayan when they turned 60 they went there to retire.I didn't get it but now I do.
@@BiggWorldCinema Have you tried Iloilo? I enjoy that city. It has most of the stuff Cebu has.
@@AsiaUnscripted You've been peeking at my itinerary Jason! I'll let you know!
Uhm, because the place & area where you lived there and the carenderia where you ate from are the not so nice areas in town. I lived there for about 5 years, when my husband had a school related job. We lived in a beautiful house and ate in the nice restaurants there. We really loved it! You could still get a lifestyle there comparable to the West. Not exactly cheap by local standards, but cheaper than the comparable standards that you would have in the west (ex. living in a beautiful modern house complete with pool and modern amenities). So you can’t really judge a place based on just one area that you lived in for a very short period. After all, I wouldn’t judge what the rest of London is based on Barking & Dagenham. 😮
just watching your video I saw a lot of reasons to live there if you like petite, slender women with dark hair and some color and I do!
Hmmm....you need to get in quick. Most are knocked up or have rice guts by their mid-twenties. If you want a looker past thirty-five go to Thailand.
The alarm or siren at 10pm is for minors , it's curfew time for them. They are not allowed to loiter around the city at 10.
thanks for the video . as a person who looks at lots of video i must say this was one of the best I have seen. especially of the people. subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing and your appreciation. If there's any subject you'd like featured here, please let me know.
Another great one. Thanks
It’s Amber from White Island in Camiguin 👋 glad to hear you’ve been monetized!
Hey Amber, thanks for your kind words! I enjoyed our lengthy chat on White Island. Hope you're good and still hiking up mountains!
We were in Dumaguete January 2020 and enjoyed the trip, it feels laidback, the boardwalk is cool and lots of restaurants.
Interesting video, great work, loved your walk through the market, food stalls and cafes. The seafront looks quite good, the traffic in town looks a nightmare, even on the seafront.
Your accommodation reminded me of my cell, oops sorry ! l mean a cell in Brixton Prison, l just loved the bricked up window, l suspect it would be quite hard to escape from without paying.........lol.
Looking forward to episode two🙂
Hmm.....Episode Two.....now that's a tall order......it's shite...... and still shite.
15.58.... blast from the past, i lived in Dumaguete for 9 years. Punky John, grey and white top ive had beers with him a few times but cant remember his name, Olgar and Gerry... brought back some memories, I left in 2017...
I listen and am subscribed to both Reekay and Gio. great bloggers for the Philippines
Can´t decide if your voice sounds more like Ringo Star or Michael Caine haha. Thanks for the informative videos
I can't really do Ringo's scouse accent. Plus he's hilarious, so hardly me! hehe
Wait for it @Bigjohnson7415 there's a line I've been wanting to slip into a voiceover for awhile now!
Most of the reasons expats give for living in Dumagete apply to many other Ph cities. Busy transit hub is one that makes sense. Could you do a video about which Ph airports tend to have the most affordable flights to the UK, states and Aus? Seems like economies of scale would favor Manilla but maybe others are cheap too.
Dumaguete is beautiful. Seafood, chicken restaurants, etc. It is a university town with the prestigious Silliman University.
Love the University campus. But I had stomach issues throughout ny stay there. Many of the food establishments lack basic hygiene requirements.
Crowded of foreinger here in Dumaguete..Try in Luzon.. Baguio ..Tagaytay Subic ..Baler also search in google ok☺️
I have lived in Dumaguete for the last 6 years. I remember telling my friends a few years ago when this place opens up again we will see more expats than ever arrive. Well I underestimated the amount by a long shot, not that it's bad but there are so many Western people here now. IMHO cities nearby are a better option, Tanjay, Dauin, Siaton and San Jose are all much smaller and have less traffic. The diversion road crossing Jose Romero has made Valencia to Dumaguete a much longer commute. For me I agree Dumaguete has the hospitals and shopping needed to live well, but get in and get out. Life is better outside the town a bit.
I'm happy that you found the right place in the Philippines for you to settle.
Good video. What specific foods do you recommend at these carinderias that would appeal to a western pallet? Maybe you could show your food in the future and give a quick 30 second review of the food/eatery.
No offense man, but to eat at these places you must no care for hygiene at all...that's for pigs, not for human consumption...😂
Very interesting! Thank you :)
I watched your video. To me Pattaya has more to offer I like walking the beach. Pattaya is a true beach city Jomtien is really nice. Phillippines English is spoken alot more.
in the early 80s, I was intrigued why two of my British friends would hurry to go Dumaguete ,once they landed in Manila . They travelled then twice a year and would stay there for at least 2 mos. I was their friend in Manila . I did visit Duma last year and was not impressed . They have only one Mall . I just follow another vlogger from the US . His budget is less than 2k per month ,but he resides in a condo in BGC .His health insurance is around $250 and is tied to the number one Medical Center in the Phils which is St Luke .You should do a vlog of BGC in the future !
Glad I found your channel. I enjoy your content keep up the great work. I just got back to Australia after 4 weeks in Cebu City. I would not return there unless I had to. I'm going back and staying in Dumaguete in 2 weeks' time for 3 months. If I like it there, I will rent my house and move there full time. I'm guessing It's as good a place to start my retirement.
Thanks for your appreciation. Have you considered other places apart from Dumaguete. I prefer the condo to house life, where I've got a nice balcony to view over a city. Tbh it doesn't really make much difference if you're in Cebu, Davao or Iloilo as most cities over the same malls etc., But for me Dumaguete is too small. Whilst you're in Dumaguete I'd also scoot up to Bacolod and Iloilo for comparison. Let me know how you get on!
And even though your English, I subscribed 😊🏴
Is your real name Bowie? Great name if it is. Great username if it isn't. A legend.
Thanks for reluctantly subscribing.
@@BiggWorldCinema yes, my name is James Bowie, born in Glasgow, 1949, older than the pyramids 😊
hey,,,thanks maybe you saved me the trip,,,,, im here in Bohol Panglao island ,,,,,,i have my great Lady with me ,,,,,its alittle remote ,,,looking for more western food ,,and people ,,,,,stay safe Phil
You're in a good spot Joseph. Don't go anywhere. Or just come on the ferry to Duma and continue to Siquijor.
That's the magic word, "great Lady"...everything else is....not important, a torture ....😂
You've got a great presentation syle.
Living in Cebu City i was looking for another location to move so i checked out dumaguete because I heard great things. But when I got there it was less friendly than Cebu city. The Filipino guards and drivers wouldn’t speak back to me only to my Filipina fiancée and most of the expats/ foreigners would give me dirty looks and pull there Filipina close. But I guess me being in my 40’s and athletic/ physically fit plays a part with other foreigners. The Filipinas were very friendly and welcoming though.
I would think that having a large expat community that might offer a possible resource to new arrivals. Would depend on how much you want to interact with them. It seems like it might be a good place to get your feet wet, especially if you aren't a "Vlogger!"😜
Sure. I imagine you can make friends easily here. I've met and dined with other foreigners here already.
I first visited about 20 years ago, I should have stayed, big changes and lots of expats now, I think the appeal is that the city is small enough and has a lot of things going on, I don’t get involved with the expat community that much😊
Like a small town rather than City imo. Not enough here to make me want to settle.
Suggest mate if you still have the “trots” get it checked out. I had the same when in the Philippines recently and when I arrived back in Australia got my diagnosis of two stomach bacteria’s that are from eating raw or undercooked pork, if untreated can cause issues.
I hope you're feeling better. Actually mine's been better over the past couple of days, so I hope I'm over it. Thanks for your concern.
Where in the Philippines were you?
I've never visited the city but might consider the place to live due to it's strategic position being close to Valencia and nearby islands Apo, Bohol and Siquijor......i would have to travel around first like you have to get a feel for the place.....the amount of expats is off-putting and might make me reconsider so we will see.
If you've got the time and energy I'd choose 6 places, spend a fortnight in each which would give you a clearer picture.
The boardwalk has been there for many years. I was in Dumaguete in January 2020 just before the whole world shut down with the Wuhan 'flu - and they had just started building a big addition to the existing boardwalk (the wider park bit) - so this why people may have said it was built only recently.
Yeah, I knew it was always there as I saw videos shot there. I said that it had recently been extended.
Looks laid back, sidewalks that aren't like mine fields, nice seaside park area, not like cebu
Expats move to the Ph. for the wonderful weather I heard many times... I watched countless videos about the Ph., zillion of them... and I only see dark clouds , rain and beaches that one shouldn't really boost about !
Conclusion : if a European wants nice clean beaches and great weather then he better go to Spain instead of travelling half around the world ! That would save him time and much aggravation. Just my take on it 🤔
@@GrindingCocoNuts2
Wrong !
Don't assume or presume what you realiy don't know. 😉
I have read a lot of Spaniards in their blogs expressing their appreciation of the natural beauty in the beaches and waterfalls of the Philippines as well as other foreign tourists who saw and experience the same. To each his own observation but yours is way off the mark. Peace✌️
The weather is a torture there man, I've been there last summer, no beaches, you have to drive for hours to go to a spot called "beach". Vloggers are all liars, they are psychos, they do not and can not tell the truth or their visa will not be extended, they will be black listed if they do not say nice things about everything. The expats have mental problems or/and they go to find what they can't have in their own country, a woman! They stay there so the woman will stay too or they can find easily another one. That's the truth!
I have been to Dumaguete many times in the past. And I have to agree with you. It is really nothing special. I think cebu city is and will always be my destination of choice in the Philippines.
I think it's more the social aspect they stay for. And handy to visit better places.
Your well traveled , and a bit wore down from your travels? i thought Duma was a nice place. Is It a bit overrated maybe so. Your point is understood.
I've subscribed and born to be alive!!! I gotta say ur a heck of a vlogger for saying it for wat it is. Idgaf when pretentious ex pats call u condescending or culturally insensitive. It's about time a Canadian-Filipino can finally watch a Brit loving and trashing the country of my birth where I left 42 years ago. Continue making me amused with ur Bigg World Cinema using ur big wide lens focused on this little big country and her big assets!
Hey Stingo! Thanks for your appreciation! Have you not been back here over the years?
@@BiggWorldCinema Haven't been back since I left in the early 80's but I'm giving myself this year to retire and go back home.; for gud if I get the girl I wanna be shacking with. While I'm here in Canada, I run a LDR contest where I choose the best Filipina finalist amongst the 20 LDR contestants. If she's the one then I'll come back and see her, give her Canadian citizenship. If she works her ass off here just like I did and if she can give me the best last 10 possibly 20 years of my life then at a younger age she'll be free to marry a white guy she always wanted . 😂
SOME EXPANTS WANT PEACE AND SOME WANT GIRLS LIKE U R. SO UR AND OTHER PEOPLE'S CHOICES R DIFFERENT PAPA.
Boardwalk is American.Promenade is English.
Dumaguete street foods should be looked into the the sanitation department of the government. I have watch couple of vloggers ended up with food poisoning after eating in carinderias in dumaguete, one vlogger by the name of Vlogging A Dead Horse got really sick and didn't continue his PH vlogging
Too right. Took me 2 weeks to recover. In every other place in the Philippines I was fine. Yeah, I saw that Vlogging had got sick too. But maybe his Red Horse consumption also took effect!
@@BiggWorldCinema yes probably the red horse also is a culprit, you don't take red horse like what he did, every single day and pocari sweat which i noticed he drinks a lot will make your stomach very acidic. not helping the trot. its good you recovered now. I am a filipino but I don't eat in carinderia, i have a very sensitive stomach lol
i was in dumaguete late last year ,first time .i didnt find any carenderias there appealing .I ended up dining in a restaurant . im a fiIipino ,based here in the US . Everytime,I go back to the Phil ,I usually dine at Carenderias in Manila that I have known for years . They serve food that Fil Restos will not. The food in Duma for me is much inferior in taste than Manila . You need to be careful eating in Carenderias ,as many of them they just reheat the food ,not sold the previous day/s.
Since they are bored like hell and can't talk about some deeper issues with their constant smiling, cooking, and cleaning partners, those ex-pats cluster together, each of them also has a UA-cam channel, where they talk about the same old subjects every week.
To answer your question: Like everywhere in the Philippines, a superficial observation will give you no proper information. Especially people who are used to european and american city planning, the lack of city planning in general, makes a lot of things difficult.
The younger audience and most expats lives and roams a bit away from the seafront, Dauin and so on.
In the city itself north of the Dumaguete port and inside the city but not Rizal Boulvevard - it belongs to those who retire..
Also the videos about stuff like "Why not" is outdated and for another audience
And yes, thats another reason, you have a proper city nearby, that you can reach in just a few minutes, traffic is never that worse that you take hours as near other cities
And no, going to the second street behind the Boulevard will not reveal a different world - like I said, if you dont know where the places are, you get a quite different impression of the city.
In the Philippines its best to have a friend there in your age range, to tell you where the things are. Otherwise you maybe could talk with someone and the person has a completely different impression because he just didnt see what you looked at, but other things.
There are great beaches, but you have to drive a few minutes outside. If you dont want to drive that long, you can go to "okay" beaches like Silliman Beach or Melrose Beach.
Also, if it might happen often to you that people look at you in contempt, when others tell they look at them with smiles and eager to interact - then, well maybe, its not them or the city: Its you.
Also to have a well kempt general appearance could help... I heard.
What people like about Dumaguete is that the people are nice, to the overwhelming majority of us foreigners. And that there is a sense of community,.
Speaking about community: What you say about vloggers in one place.. If you can imagine what they are talking about, how about to visit instead of speculating.
This is one of the greatest thing you can do as a vlogger, because it takes you further, if you exchange yourself with others, share experiences and information and get it also.
But with one thing I am on the same page as you: Dumaguete (+ Surroundings) isnt the right city for you.
You could tell
We have 7,107 Islands. Many Foreigners retired in different parts of the Philippines not only in Dumaguete.
