as an engineering apprentice part of my training was to learn how to make machine tools quieter by building a box around them and using your style of material to create anechoic chambers, you've done something similar, your boards reflect the sound backwards and forwards but by introducing the triangulations with the foam you've disrupted the sound reflection and it did make a difference, If you ran foam around the outside with the triangulations facing in you would most likely find the noise would vanish and you'd think the trains had stopped 😀

      @rzholland Рік тому +5

I am not an engineer at all, But I was thinking the same about the outside. Also some form of sound absorption between the top of the M8 threaded rods and the top base board

If or when a train derails, Charlie would have to remove the foam stuff from around the helix. I'm sure he would enjoy doing that! 🙂

Another great video Charlie and some really useful tips as always. The sound absorbent material really does make a difference and makes me smile - for the simple reason that when we go out with our friends for a saturday night curry we like to chat. There is nothing worse than going to a restaurant and hearing loud music, then hearing happy guests being even louder over the loud music. Why is this ? Simple. Bare walls bare floor and nothing to absorb any of that noise. It is amazing the difference a carpet and maybe some wall drapes and curtains make in a restaurant.
The TMD is shaping up really well
Covid - had it twice and it was different both times. In August it was a runny nose whereas 2020 it was a coughy, short of breath experience. Just had booster and flu jab, one in each arm, and hopefully they get me through the winter. The virus is certainly not the scarey worry it was in 2020 though.
Take car and keep on with the videos. Thanks

Oh Charlie, you have my fullest sympathy! I have had the damned Covid twice myself so I understand how irritating it is. I’d like to think that it wasn’t so bad because I got jabbed! 🤔 Well done for trooping on regardless, and I think you’ve definitely hit on something with that sound proofing as it certainly made the cacophonous wheel clatter far less noticeable. Don’t get me wrong, I love ‘clickety clack’ but if you have got several trains going on at once, that has got to be deafening at times! 😵‍💫
I wondered if you were thinking of some kind of easily removable cape around the outside to do a similar job? Maybe something that is easily removable using Velcro or press studs? 🤷🏻‍♂️
The use of a headshunt will certainly improve the operation potential of that scene too. I wonder if you’d consider stretching it’s length to say about 45” or so, as then you could hold a train in it and allow another already in the sidings to depart if you so wish or ever maybe store a wagon/shunter at the end of it😉
Cheers Charlie, get well soon mate! 👍🍻🍀

Picking up on your musings about potential uses for the former Loco Shed, and your comment about the whole site becoming too cluttered, it occurred to me that unless you're modelling developments on an entirely empty prototypical site in effectively a single moment in time, there are always going to be indicators from previous eras or pointers to stuff in progress. A depot/tmd site is always in transition and one moment might have several HST Power Cars on decision, or may be it's a temporary home for some vagrant track machines. There are pretty well always overgrown sidings which have become at temporary home to some rusting locos or rolling stock on their way for scrap ( at "Chadmores" of Newport obviously! ) So, here's to clutter and serendipity and the "How did that Loco get here?" moment. Great channel Charlie, congrats on the award, and Happy New Year! ( Catching up after Covid! )

Hi Charlie, you might receive this twice, didn’t have a UA-cam Channel. Anyway, I really enjoy your videos, most informative. Regarding your hard to access Tortoise Point Motors, how about dropping them in from above? Firstly, determine the exact location where the Tortoise piano wire actuator will come through the baseboard. Then, using that as the centre, cut a 120 mm hole through the baseboard. Then, using your router, cut a 5 mm wide x 6 mm deep rebate around the circumference of the hole. Then cut a 130 mm disk from 6 mm ply. This should be just large enough for the Tortoise to fit within the radius of the hole. Then mount your Tortoise pint motor under, and your point above, the disk. This allows you to bench test operation before final mounting. Then just drop the disk with the Tortoise and point into the baseboard hole. Then rotate to correct orientation and silicone into position. QED. If you need to access the Tortoise, then remove the rail joiners and lever the disk with the Tortoise and point upwards. If you ever want to change the location of the point, then cut another 130 mm disk to cover up the original hole. I use this method with 50 mm extruded foam baseboard. Cheers, Stew

Hi Charlie, sorry to hear that you and your wife have gone down with Covid-19. As you know I live in New Zealand and in late March (our early autumn) this year, first my wife who works in health came home with Covid-19, then a week later I went down with it, then anther week later my daughter went down with it. Luckily we had all our vaccinations so the infection was very mild, but NZ regulations, I still had to self isolate for three weeks.
But a few weeks later, because of our Covid-19 reduced immunity, first my wife then me went down with the winter flu, and it was really severe. So with winter approaching over there, please make sure your flu vaccinations are up to date.
The reason all my turnouts are operated by wire-in-tube is my inability to easily access the underside of my layout, however, I liked the look of the smaller slow action turnout motors you displayed. As I still have half a dozen of my turnouts on my layout that a too far way for wire-in-tube operation. Have you got around to using any of them yet ?.

Of all the you tubers I've seen, nobody has said how much they have invested in their layouts. As a person who pays attention to sound, it might be worth your time investigating the various sound meter apps for your particular phone.
Such apps are not without controversy, but, if you use one, you do get a comparison of like to like. So that [activity 1] is nn dB and [activity 2] is yy dB. Decibels being log units, fussing with more than one decimal place winds up a bit pointless, except for having online arguments.
So, with the generic meter on my phone, there was about 4dB on the playback recording. In situ would be more telling.

    Continuing today:
Charlie, I think the foam on the floor of the helix would be enough to ease the dropping of a train; that the vertical circle of foam you then add isn't really necessary and in fact COULD actually snag a diesel horn, coupler, or steam bell, say, on its way down..Also it's not impossible a train could fall to the outside of any helix, as well..

Hi Charlie, I’m acoustic trained (although partly deaf now😂). Listening to that sound deadening, I ‘think’ you have cut out much more sound than you say, but also accidentally boosted a bit again. You can a distinct tone in the deader version that sounds like a resonant peak, and I would guess that it’s the internal resonance of the sound proofing octagon. It’s acting like a cello body. Looks to be pretty much the same as it’s height too, which will all add to together. If you didn’t need the padding element, I would suggest a series of odd size and shape columns, rather than a single hollow structure, but.. try putting some spare foam inside the box , or better and cheaper, use an old duvet or pillows.

Charlie, I see you have a slight problem with unwanted noise. Have you ever tried sound proofing the under side of your layout? I know that layout boards can resonate sound through them and I was wondering if this would help? They make a sound proofing material that is used on the floor of vehicles when restoring them and it really works. It is a bit costly, so maybe foam or even egg cartons. I know back in my younger years egg cartons where used for sound proofing walls and rooms by musicians. Just a thought. Take care of yourself, Covid can be nasty.

Charlie. I have just enjoyed #172. Allie and I are sorry to hear that you and Margaret have been caught by Covid and wish you both a great recovery. I have a question regarding the change in track that you created to add the head shunt. I wish I could add a screen snip, but have no idea how to do this on UA-cam. So words. As the line comes out of the tunnel, you add a point and about 5 feet of track to another point. That length of track just isn't needed as it is simply paralleled by the track that accesses the head shunt and the sidings. Is it?? We (still) LOVE your channel. Jonathan

Enjoyed your video very much. Why didn't you open up the bottom of the helix? The floor in the middle doesn't make any sense. With an opening in the bottom, you have emergency access to the inside of the helix and the underside of the tracks of your depot. The sound suppression with the foam would be much more effective when placed on the outside of the helix. (on replaceable panels with the foam on the inside).

    • @ChadwickModelRailway

Love the idea of the head shunt for the fuel depot, especially as, from what I think you said last time, the loco would be reversing back from within a tunnel that hides the reverse loop, which doesn't seem safe in a real world scenario.

The reason for the apparent "more bass" in the sound after the insulation is added is because high frequencies are easier to stop with small wedges, to remove bass frequencies you'd need much bigger wedges (have you seen an anechoic chamber!?). On the subject of the "sound wall"... with there being a gap between the wall and the various levels of the helix, should any rollingstock fall, wouldn't it be possible that they could pinball their way down and cause more damage rather than just falling into an open area, or worse, rebound onto a track on a lower level and cause a major derailment over another train running up/down the helix?

You may want to dip the biscuits in a bit of sanding sealer, if you want biscuit-jointed edges to come loose in future. The biscuits are often made of a material which will swell up from relatively low humidity levels, as that's normally a boon when building furniture or the like. From my experience, you want the biscuits loose, and not glues to one side or the other of a joint meant to be struck down. Else the fool things break off in rude ways need a couple of hours of fussing with when one only has 15 or 20 minutes to spare.

Hi Charlie ,, yet another really good advice video there m8.
I do have a question for you (or anyone) ,, What is your bestest tool to use cut flexitrak ,, be it a dremel or hacksaw or is there a like tin snips or a 9" grinder even lol or is there a cutter gizmo that is successful in cutting the tracks clean an neat and straight.
Also i think with the sound deadening maybe you could put a layer of the same stuff on the outside as you did on the inside of it as will also quieten more and save more in case they fall onto the outside of the helix ,, once the trains are broken from a fall to even just the table top they are broken forever. just a thought. 😎
Im also glad you read all the comments and i am glad and appreciative that you reply to as many as you can , as it people like you that keeps the interest going in our hobby as some people stumble a bit and cant get there heads around it as what some of us seem to be an easy fix but having an open discussion into into our hobby well it makes it so good for all.

I have just over Covid. Had a nasty cough for a few days and a blocked-up nose etc. Fine now though, although the minor OP I was due has been cancelled due to having to be free of Covid for 7 weeks before a general Anaesthetic.
Anyway, A question. How do your tanker waggons unload or load their fuel? I thought each waggon would need to go up to the large fuel tank to do that. So the track would either need to go past the Fuel tank the length of the train to get the last waggon next to the fuel tank or each waggon would need to be routed onto the empty track via a headshunt and then the next one moved up until they are all emptied or filled.

Hi Charlie great video thank you. Get well soon. Will you run a dmu through the wash plant? Then place it before the fuel point. Or if not place it after the fuel point. Wash plants are rarely on a dead end siding. Consider a short head shunt after the loco wash with a point to allow the loco or pair of locos to run around after the wash and return to the main running line. Generally a loco will come off shed, take fuel then wash n go. I think you have room to fit another line for this. Cheers Alan

I don't think keeping super glue in the fridge is the only solution. I am still using a bottle from four years ago. I found if I keep it in a box, or anywhere out of daylight it stays as new.

I think you’re somewhat lucky Colin. Mine were never in the sunshine, but I lost lost bottle after bottle! Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, have you given any thought to sticking the foam directly onto the underside of you boards where there are no wires or obstructions?

Yes, I have Peter, but will see how the initial fit stands the test of time first.
