I've had four Cairns over the years. Each one was very similar and yet totally unique. They're absolutely incredible dogs!

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve always had at least two or three at a time. Each very unique, they’re of the same spirit I suppose.
After having 5 now, they each have a unique obsession too.

Hazy plays dead, shuts the doors and is learning to wipe his feet. He demands your attention. Best dogs ever.

Had a rescue cairn terrier named Kohl. He was such an interesting little guy. They certainly latch onto the first person they get the most love from. My mother got him from a rescue kennel, and when we got him he was so lost on where he was and what was happening to him. He paced around the kitchen for a couple hours the day we got him so I put him on a leash and took him outside. It was like it was his first time he has been outside and especially on a leash, he was like a kite in the wind 😋. Bouncing this way and that not knowing what the heck to do made me feel so sad for him, cus he was 2 years old. Got him back inside and he went back to his nervous little way about the kitchen this way and that and to me looked terribly exhausted with all the new surroundings. I gave him and treat and pick him up and brought him up to my bed thinking maybe he’d chill out a bit if I gave him a comfy spot to relax….looking back that was initial thing that made him my best buddy for the next 11 years of my life. He laid down immediately and fell into a deep sleep, like it was the first time had relaxed in a long tim or possibly his entire life. We grew so much together the next 11 years of life, teaching each other so many things, but most of all love and trust. Last September I noticed him losing weight rapidly so we had gotten him to the vet several times over the next month and a half and each time the vets came up empty handed not knowing what was wrong with him until he began to struggle breathing, like had had a heart attack or a small stroke. Two weeks later knowing he was close to leaving my life, I took him to the park we both love to go and had met many dogs and their owners. Pulling into the park, it had started to rain a bit, he always hated the rain and especially loud thunder claps…. He would always get nervous when it rained and would shake well this time he knew it immediately and just as we got to a parking spot, he looked up at me in terror, eyes glassed over and tongue hanging out and was pitch white… he then tumble over and was gone as fast as he showed up in my life. Crushed me, and still feel like he’s with me everyday. I owe tons to his beautiful soul for every moment we were together. He got me through many rough patches in my life, yet I know he felt the same way about me. He was a great little guy and my best friend for years and couldn’t even talk yet he spoke so much to me with just his eyes and soul. Make sure you have a lot of Time for these little dogs they are quite emotional and need to walk a lot every day to keep their true happiness up. They as well as many little dogs tend to have or get bad teeth and gums so be aware of that and try your best to brush their teeth daily if you can. When kohl came to us his poor teeth were already starting to be a problem and sadly had to have almost all of them extracted, avoid this at all cost or try not to get to that point ever. I beleive that could have been to his very detriment possibly an infection that started after his second extraction. Both were terrible and will Crush your heart seeing them go through that putting any little dog out even once isn’t great at all for them. Anesthesia is hard on little dogs obviously as well as for teeth extraction cus of infection. Both times he bounced back wonderfully as almost not Change to him at all. However looking back at the second extraction I believe either an infection before or after was the culprit to his decline. His mouth looked perfect after the second extraction healed, his poor little teeth less mouth broke my heart always and still does but I think something probably had infected him during or shortly after healing up and gone to his heart or lungs. It’s also gonna will destroy your bank account, and most of all your heart so make sure you keep an eye at their mouth teeth and gums and be super proactive if you see any problems at all and don’t ever wait cus it could be super detrimental to their health no matter if theyre acting normal as if they don’t seem to be In any pain. If you find a cairn somewhere out there in the world at some point they are great companions that will love you more than more than even some of the best humans in your life. ❤🐕

I rescued and adopted a Toxirn, a Chihuahua-Cairn mix. Highly independent, intelligent, curious, playful, stubborn, loyal, happy dog with an indomitable spirit. It is NOT a breed for agility training!!!! While it is agile and fast, it has not been bred for taking commands from humans, so don't do it. This is like taking a Track star and forcing them to become Swimmers. Wrong. Stick to what this working breed was meant to do -flush out small prey like rats and mice from cairns (piles of rocks in Scots), and take them outdoors a lot. Make your dog happy. Derive happiness from your dog's happy state. A dog is not an object to be molded to your needs like a foam pillow. If that is what you want, get a companion breed like a Chi, Maltese, Maltipoo, Bichon, Yorkie, Mini Poodle, etc. Please be what the dog needs you to be or get another dog. NO AGILITY, NO SUPER TRAINING, JUST THE BASICS.
One thing to note: Cairns and to some extent Toxirns, need to be STRIPPED, along with brushed. Stripping should be done with a stripping comb or rake, and a special technique. It takes a long time. Learn how. An undercoat brush is also necessary, and a bristle brush for massage and gloss. Teeth must be brushed - use an electric toothbrush with CET toothpaste. It is much faster. Gum disease and dental decay are a problem with all small breeds.
