Only after watching this scene in this perspective and reading comments i realised that there was basically a double-kill. She made them call names of certain people in order for them to make a contract with certain demon in trade for their lives. So basically these prisoners that were calling these random names, they were not knowingly selling their lives in return for killing certain people.
Willingly? Not really. Spoiler: Makima forces aki to make contract with her when hes seemingly under control of hypnotism of makima. Whatever it is, aki was not having a clear mind when making contract with makima. We didnt know if makima forces the prisoner to make contract, but usually contract speeches end with acceptance word from both subject but at least one of the subject must be fully aware. The prisoner only saying name doesnt mean a contract is made. But makima surely using devil abi under her control to kill the kidnapper via sacrificing the prisoners. Its like curse devil needed you to stab targets three time before its abi activated
I love that mappa did they're own thing in terms of the angles and shots. They both have distinct styles that give them their own identities. I love both💯⛓️🪚
Also mad props to Fujimoto for his amazing sense of panelling and flow. Everything in this scene just feels so effortless to read. It legit feels like a storyboard for a movie. He knows when to put emphasis on a scene and when to keep them brief but still informative and easy to digest for the readers. Like, I legit have no idea how some of this scene is gonna be depicted in the anime because everything just feels so tailor made for the manga medium (down to panel size and placements). Fujimoto got the right idea when he told the anime staff to do their own thing for the anime. He knows that what he does cannot be replicated 1:1 on a different medium and the staff needs to get creative.
This is probably one of the Best manga motion edits I've ever saw. The edit, the direction are top level man. It's a crime that you are soo underrated. Gotta sub asap!
I have a theory that there Makima was using the power of what probably is the Devil of Heights/Falling, since those fears are primal, or instinctive like darkness, so it is believable that he would be that poweful (further evidence is that Makima had ordered for the devil hunters to book a staying in the highest place in Kyoto/Tokyo/whenever that was, (I forgot lol))
If your theory is true then I wonder if there's anymore requirements to use this devil besides knowing the target name and a person (to sacrifice?), like is there any downside for the contracted person? But since we only see Makima using it, and she being the control devil and all (so no downside for her using other devil's power), we don't really know for sure other downside for using this devil. Also imo this devil could be a hitman's dream like no interaction at all, just knowing the target's name and a random person to sacrifice and BAM! You got a happy client and a crime scene somewhere that is someone elses business

Curse took away chunks of Aki's lifespan and in the case of Santa Claus they only demanded the feelings of her fingertips. Guess the most dangerous the contractor is less is the price they should pay? Then again the manga has shown that the actual super nasty demons demand full on human sacrifice so Makima having to sacrifice a person for each use of the Falling/Heights Devil power doesn't seem very far away from what I would expect it to be.
