got mine too, finally tight clock!
If anyone interested, I use elektron overbridge in the analog rytm, to synch with the daw, then I send the clock from the analog rytm to a Kenton 25 thru box and distribute the clock to other devices, and no latency at all.
Great explanation of the multiclock.
you must be ignoring the different latencies each device respond to the incoming midi, i.e 5 ms in case of drum machine A and 15 ms in case is drum machine B. it might not be a big deal with synths, but it's often a problem with sequencers.
@@RadekPilich hello, I didn’t measure, but to my ears it sounds in synch, only real problem is to synch my Jupiter Xm sequencer, but that’s another story.
Edit: I forgot to tell that I don’t actually record any synth into the daw. I just use Ableton fx into some audio inputs and some clipper, tape emulation and limiter on the master channel.
@@RadekPilich it is a good point but actually the more they are "closer" to each other the more phasing you will hear :because of jitter, even with the perfect midi, it will never be perfect for layring sounds.
the shift function of the er-m is more of a creative feature...
you still get sample accurate midi clock with elektron overbridge, people use to sequence instruments with midi clock and no computers.
again a superb video
surprised there are not more standalone products like this, standalone master midi clocks. the only other one i could find was the Roland sync box which has been discontinued...
Forever Multiclock❤
Oh yea I love my E-RM box. I use it as a master clock for many of my devices. It gives my Pioneer SP-16 a nice groove
The pioneer looks cool! Never tried it!
@@winesynths I had the SP-16 for years. It's a great unit with the very crucial misbehaviour of loosing a tiny time gap when switching patterns (Beat Thang anyone? LOL). So if you run it for an hour and keep switching patterns all the time the sync will be totally off. The solution is to make the SP-16 the master clock or not to switch patterns a lot (unlike with the Beat Thang, the time gap is very small and won't really be noticed unless switching the pattern very often).
@@winesynths u should :)
I used to use SMPTE back in the late 80s with an 8 track tape machine. Used to sync the tape with MusixX on the Commodore Amiga. All vocal and guitar tracks were recorded onto tape and all the synths, samplers and drum machines played via MIDI from MusicX. We would mix down onto DAT. This looks like a nice clock, and sounds very tight.
Cool! I never used or had an Amiga. So I didn't know that this was even possible! 👍
@@winesynths the Amiga was a very good music computer. It didn't have the built in midi interface that the ST did, but there were plenty of interfaces available. And sampling modules. I didn't really use that aspect though, as I had an Akai.
Well, except when using MED and OctaMED trackers. Although it only had 4 sampling voices, OctaMED, through some canny coding, gave you 8 voices.
MusicX was an incredible MIDI sequencer. In its day. I think that Prince used it, so that was good enough for me 😀
I had a friend who made music for the Amiga demo scene. But it never really was my thing. My first music computer was a 1040ST with Cubase. But I only had a Juno-60 with DCB to Midi and a TR-707 and later a Sony DAT. I also had a friend with a 4 track Tascam Porta Studio, a DX9 and a Poly61! 🤓 So little by little I accumulated Midi stuff around it and brought it together with the analogue Synths. The pinnacle of 90ies was a fully expanded JV-1080 and a K2000 as Sampler. Then you needed a big desk, outboard an FX to mix everything! Later on I bought a PC and regretted it forever and at one point I totally stoppd producing and played saxophone! 😁 Now I use an M1 Mac Mini as my main studio computer and for video editing. Compared to 30 years ago, it's like Science Fiction! And I love it because everything works just flawless without any annoying computer hassle! 👽🚀🛸
Wonderful video, really learned even more about how midi works with PCs!You may have addressed this in the video but I'm looking for some clarification: with this device can you sync the audio timecode from Ableton and track midi notes from Ableton simultaneously to external hardware?
yes absolutely! The Sync and Midi Ports work separately. Connected via USB it will show 4 Midi Ports with 16 channels each in Ableton. But you won‘t send the Midi Clock out from here!
Does sound tight i have to say i use the beatstep and it is a mess when i record lol but it adds character
The power switch of the E-RM Multiclock is a micro switch that's positioned on the backside of the unit, hidden below the power connector. I think it's the worst power switch misconstruction I ever came across other than not having any power switch at all 😁
I also took a while to discover it. I think it was turned to "on" by default...
I just ignore it and power the multiclock up with the rest of the studio. 🔌
Very good and detailled review! Thanks! I have been using Multiclock for years. As a collector of old drum machines this device was the solution to all of my sync and MIDI clock jitter problems. The only small problem is that DIN Sync only supports 24 ppq (Roland standard). Korg used 48 ppq for the clock. This is a very rare problem only which can be addressed by programming the drum machine accordingly.
BTW: Besides Atari’s glorious MIDI-timing my Commodore C64 with a C-Lab Supertrack cartridge delivered a rock solid clock as well 😊
Thanks for this interesting information! So which Korg drum machines had DIN-Sync? 🤓 Maybe this can be fixed with an update. But first let's see, how it and who continues with the Mulitclock!
Korg drum machines with DIN Sync are DDM-110, DDM-220 and KPR-77. Not the most sought-after models though. But you never know 😉 I am not aware of other Korg machines. Direct successors DDD-1 and DDD-5 were equipped with MIDI.
When running DIN Sync it is very important to use cables with all 5 pins connected. Dedicated MIDI-cables (3 pins only) will not work.
I also hope that the E-RM products will still be made available in the future.
I had a DDM-110 "Super Drums" lying around in my studio for quite a while! I never realized that it had Sync! Found it really crappy back in the days! 😀
Concerning the Mulitclock there will be probably be some good news on the Superbooth in May! What I can tell you, for now, is that the original developer is working on a firmware update. But it's still a very confidential rumor! 😁
Tight!
Nice, the ERM has been on my gas-list for a while now. All your sequencing is done from Ableton? I haven't seen a midi-interface in your setup? May I suggest less camera angle switching for your video? Great video, as always!
Thanks for the suggestions! I use the Midi-Port of the Arturia Audiofuse and sometimes a Scarlet. And I have a big powered USB-Hub, where I connect all the USB-MIDI stuff. The Ableton file you see at the end of the video is the final result of the process. Usually I like to start with external sequencers, arpeggiators and drum machine patterns to create the base of a track. Just like we do it in our jam sessions. That's why sync became a real problem at one point. Then I record it and start to cut out an arrangement from this multitrack block. I am actually working on a "how-to" video where I show some details of this track on the screen. Also, to try a new Live-based format.
Ja. Amiga 1200 mit Bars and Pipes als Sequenzer!

Will this work to accept audio from dj mixer in order to be in sync with eurorack.
No DAW. with out using DAW
why not? if you have a channel left to send the audio signal out? So, I am not an expert on modern DJ gear! Sorry! But it‘s an interesting question and I see a lot of creative potential in this idea! 🍀
Awesome review, well done! :D Would love you to make something similar for the Midronome when we have one ready for you ;)

Bonjour Simon! You showed me the Midronome at Superbooth. Also a great tool! I would really like to make a video when it’s ready! 🍀
@@winesynths Oh god I am so sorry!! I saw a lot of people during these days but I think I remember you passing by :D
EIther way Awesome that you're up for it - I'll make sure to find one for you when I can!

Hi, i try in Ableton (to sync a TR-8S) with the track delay tricks and it doesn't work...it starts when i press play but it seems that whatever value i put in the track delay, i still have to do some NEGATIVE adjustements, and of course i can't in this mode. Do i miss something?
If the TR-8s starts to early, you could try to delay the other instruments on the MC. It‘s difficult for me to give advice for such individiual problems with gear I do not use like the TR-8s. So I hope you will make it work! 🍀
Hey. If you don't the question, what is the DC power supply unit & distributor, visible at 17:11 ?
This one: thmn.to/thoprod/421895?partner_id=51772
So when recording multiple synths in as audio at once always has timing issue. They have to mess with latency settings, track delay or midi offsets settings after calculating each devices latency thru recording a pulse.
Does the ERM clock offset parameters allow you to find each devices latency and set it and forget it once and never have recording audio timing issues again?
You can save per-output presets with pre-defined latency, but I find it so easy to just play with the channel latency knobs until it sounds good. Sometimes you want a particular device to be a little ahead or behind, or you're trying to partly counteract a slow envelope. It's a game-changer.
will this fix the delay from a midi notes in my daw that triggers the sounds in my outboard synth? when i record the audio from my synth that is triggered by midi from my daw, the audio arrives several milliseconds later. I have adjusted my audio recording offset which works when i record myself playing live but when it is sequenced midi notes from the daw, there is a persistent delay that wont go away.
it totally depends on your use case, the DAW and the Midi gear you are using.
I never had syncing problems, but all my MIDI Interfaces and Software support MIDI Time Stamping.
so what are you using?
How does it work dawleess? still good? thanks for the video
of course you can also synchronize dawless stuff in any way you like.
Oh how I miss my 1040 STe even using a Mac with Cubase 2.0 had better midi timing then todays gear 😩
Had 1 for over a year .. it’s a 100% game charger …a keeper and studio beast .. and yes it’s the same as using an old school unitor on my old Atari (fyi. ….also 1 of the tightest sync units ever . ). “SMPTE code “social of motion pictures and television engineers is its full name and. Aries a hint to why it’s such an accurate tool ..it’s bcos it’s counts frames not beats and frames a much smaller unit to be locked to .. nice clip ..”stay up n on it old school dude ..we rock lol “
You know what im talking about! 👍
All the best from Berlin! 🍀

Hello,
Could you have more than 1 multiclock ? (2 plugin) & 2 audio out to each multiclock ?
For 8having micro timing & shuffle, specialy for drum machines
yes! why not? you could split the trigger signal to two separate multiclock. I never tried! But it‘s scheduled for a future multiclock video! 👾
@@winesynths thanks for your answer ! just got one erm yesterday & it change everything in my studio ! no more random latency thrue usb ! your video was the one who sold me this beast !! many thanks
@@JJ-hl7zr cool! welcome to the club! check our studio tour video where the multiclock plays a major role now! 🍀
Buy local, sync global. Love it.
Does this allow you to send midi notes sent from your DAW to your external hardware synths and keep these hardware synths in sync (if they don't have a built sequencer)?
Totally. It‘s also a fully fledged 4 port Midi Interface with a routing matrix. It‘s no problem to send sync to a drum machine on channel 1 and Midi notes to a synth on channel 2 chained over the Thru.
@@winesynths So the multiclock just connects to your PC/Mac via USB to get the midi output? I really don't understand this though - I see lots of people using it to sync their DAW to their external hardware but then ERM say: "The multiclock improves the timing of all instruments which are clocked by it. Nevertheless, you can not manipulate notes that you send from your DAW to your synths through the multiclock MIDI Interface. Keep your sequences in the internal sequencers of your external instruments or sequencers for tight lines!" That makes me think it wouldn't work
It does both in parallel. You plug it to your computer with USB and you will get 4 Midi Ports. The main function is the stable midi clock that is generated from an audio output signal of your DAW. There is an Audio Input on the Midi Clock that converts this trigger signal to Midi-Clock. The reason is that DAW Midi is not prioritized and tends to jitter. So your beats may be less tight if you try to sync a drum machine with the DAW.
does this work well in a dawless setup? where would it go in the midi signal chain?
In a dawless setup I would use it as a master. This allows you to start the four channels separately. And you have an analogue clock for eurorack etc.
@@winesynths I should RTFM of course! having the ERM as the master, say before the sequencer in a dawless setup, how would you use the individual swing functions?
What if you have more than 4 midi synths. How do u set the latency offset for those others,do you need another ERM Multiclock?
I had a conversation with the developper the other day and asked this! According to him it should be perfectly possible to split the audio signal with a y-cable to connect a second multiclock. I asked him to get me a second to one to check in studio. So maybe this could result in a tips&tricks video. Stay tuned! And thanks for the input! 🍀
small latency asynchronicity is not that big deal with synths. it's more of an issue for drum machines / sequencers.... and 4 outputs should be quite enough for those.
What's the name of the stand you are using under the Multiclock in this vid?
It‘s a tablet stand from Amazon. 🤖
What’s with the camera angles at 30 sec mark. Very bad
Hey, have you tested DIN sync with a TB303 o TR-808. I'm having serious troubles working with both because of the DIN sync continue which is implemented on the Multiclock. It sync correctly but when I hit stop on the Multiclock (no matter if master stop or single channel) Tb303 and Tr808 go to freeze until I disconnect the din cable.
We jammed around a whole afternoon with my friends TB-303 and had no trouble. Sorry that I can‘t help you for now! 🍀
@@winesynths where you in write or play mode on 303? do you tested both?
@@giuseppemagistro6648 both. we recorded the last session video with the modor and the rz-1 while doing it! The „TB-Operator“ had no complaints. And Stefan is the most critical person I know, when it comes to 303 stuff! 😁 Did you contact E-RM?
@@winesynths yes I did, no help. I'm trying to figure out if it is a problem related to my chain or it is normal behaviour on old tr303/808. The point is that the problem happens only when erm is connected, not with other master like digitakt. thanks for your hep I need to dig further. Cheers
@@giuseppemagistro6648 the next time a have OG Roland DIN-Sync stuff here, I will keep an eye in it!
@wine&Synths whats the little stand your using for it?
simple tablet stand from Amazon.
How would this Multiclock compare to an MRCC?
Good question! Seeing the specs of the Conductive Labs MRCC, it's more a kind of MIDI-Router/Patchbay plus a sequencer and other useful stuff like an arpeggiator. And it looks cool! But it doesn't have the Audio-Sync feature that makes the Multiclock standing out. So, for me, it's not really comparable. The only other product that does it, to my knowledge, is the SND ACME4: schneidersladen.de/de/snd-acme4
Mate I keep trying to reload this video and it’s still not playing, can you check if upload was completed ? Cheers
The Upload is completed, but it's still checking the HD version. Sometimes YT takes quite a while. Sorry for that! But it works in the browser on my mac.
Nice side camera looker angles bruh bruh! You use FL Studio?
No! Ableton only here! 🍀
@@winesynths is that a 14 words kinda clover, brother?
@@decapitateallcops3214 Flowers? 🌻🤖
Does this work with a Mac M1?
of course! And you can use it with any Daw available.
I can not afford one of these. But oddly enough I have no sync issues with my good old 5-pin DIN sync daisy chaining. Unfortunately, I have a few pieces of gear that has no thru so am forced to use USB and it really kills my enjoyment of it that it can't play in time with everything else..
Midi over usb is just the worst. It was just an excuse to take our thru ports a way. Every device has its own inscrutable amount of latency. Old school midi worked perfectly for 30 years before DAWs came along and ruined everything
I also prefer to work with Din-Midi. And the best for me is analogue trigger with my old Rolands. But when I started with all this new USB-stuff in conjunction with analogue, I was really frustrated with timing issues! Multiclock is simply a very strong tool to bring some order in your setup. It will not magically solve all your timing problems! 🍀🤖

Would that sync with my morning Sancerre? Hey - you said WINE and Synths :P seriously though - that is a solution that would save me a lot of nerves as even back in the day using 4 channel tracker with hexadecimal instruction set as a music creating tool wasn't as complicated. The biggest problem is that these latencies are very inconsistent. Even throughout several minutes of playtime... Scheisse!

It's a great piece of kit but absurdly overpriced. Thankfully I found an alternative for about a quarter of the price in the Midronome - which was a Kickstarter project.
The midronome is really cool, but not comparable to the multiclock. Different type of use!
@@winesynths interesting! I was hoping to use it for the kind of thing Midronome provides and the designer told me it could do it. My should arrive soon, so I guess I'll find out!
