Dr. Jay Siegel, the lead singer, can still hit those high notes! Thanks, PBS for getting all this ols stuff on TV for young listeners to hear how music should be made.

I remember when this first came out when I was in my teens. It is sung the same way when it first came out. All kudos to them.
This puts them in the same league as Frankie Valli and the 4 seasons.
WOW HE CAN STILL SING THE SAME AS WHEN THIS SONG WAS RELEASED IN THE 60s!
the lead singer looks ageless and sounds as great as back in the day back in the 1960s
no modern songs can top these.
So good they made a movie. Darn we were loved awesome music! Proud to be one of that era.
Hate it that a lot of us (new generation) dont like these types of songs - legends
O.O Impresionante! Tantas años han pasado y la voz la conserva! Digno de Admirar
simmons7,
Thank you. And thanks, too for your courteous reply. I can see you do know a good deal about The Tokens. I love these guys, too. I even like their contribution to the 'Schoolhouse Rock' collection; A Victim of Gravity. In fact, that is my second favorite Tokens' song, next to 'Lion'. Regards, Anna
Amazing voices!!!
I love this song!!!!
The Tokens were not only were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004 but ...
In 1998, the tokens made it into the Guinness Book of World Records. Do you know why? Hint: "Oh Say Can you See"/30 Major Leagues... Go look it up... Fascinating group.
As well as being performing and recording artists, The Tokens were also record producers.
Neil Sedaka? Remember him? Yep... The Tokens
Great to hear how great Jay still sounds today...You go Jay Siegel... Love ya...
Muy hermoso. Todavía canta muy lindo a pesar de los años. Gracias.
I'll bet no one will be listening to lady gaga or britney, 40 years later...Hell, no one listens to them NOW! This is classic , will still be good 10 years from now.

You can't say the same for todays modern music promoting "young wild and free" mentality.
In 20 years they will be dead, in prison, or living a shitty life.

when you have a good horse - you ride it. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was a good horse... no question.
It was taken off-line because of some copyright issue. Great video though and she has a helluva voice. I've bought The Skyliners CD because she is on it.
very talented people
I love this song and it would be really fun to go to one of their concerts don't get me wrong...but does anyone else find it weird that a bunch of old people are there? Ha ha
much more than just awesome!
This song, originally called "Mbube" (Zulu for "lion") was penned in the 1920s by Solomon Linda, a South African singer of Zulu origin. The song was released in 1939 and "Mbube" made Linda a star in South Africa. His popularity led to a style of capella that is ubiquitous today. In 1949, Alan Lomax brought Linda's recording to his friend Pete Seeger. The Weavers recorded "Wimoweh"- they had misinterpreted the song's chorus of "Uyimbube", which means "You are a lion" in Zulu.
You are correct! There is a little more history to the band the Margo bros. didn't join right away. Jay continuted on with Hank Medress, Warren Schwartz and Fred Kalkstein and recorded under another name. Then later the Margo brothers joined. But it's all good, I love the great music they made!
la magia no se acaba con estos tipos
The token's are such a cute group! :) gotta love em...:D
He's still got it
Dang... They've still got it!
Sounds DARN good.
The Weavers combined "Wimoweh" and Solomon Linda's own improvised "In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight". Some say that it's meaning relates to legend, but more likely it refers to Linda's killing of a lion cub when he was a boy. The Weavers' 1951 version was a hit. In 1961 George Weiss completed an arrangement of "Wimoweh" for "The Tokens". Weiss added new lyrics: "Near the village, the quiet village, the lion sleeps tonight" and "Hush, my darling, don't fear, my darling"
Yes, they are the original Tokens!
