the second one was bearable, the third one was just awful. It's not even just a bad adaptation. It's an awful movie in general. I felt so bad for the actors.
Fun fact: I was an extra in this movie. The choosing ceremony scene--it was so hot in there that people were passing out. We were filming in the beginning of July and there was no AC and the first day we weren't allowed water. The next day they let us have water, though. And I was Abnegation. You can only see me for .000000001 of a second and you have to really be looking, but it was a fun experience anyway. And I'm still in awe that I got to see Kate Winslet working. She's a treasure.

Theo only showed up to introduce the movie, then he bounced. But two years later, I got to see and ask him a question on an AOL Bulid, and I saw him on the red carpet at the Allegiant premiere. At the after party he stayed in the hidden VIP area for the most part.
She didn't do the test fearlessly, the test literally is her fears. She got through the test by being aware it was a test. The movie didn't do a very good job at showing she was afraid each time, but then her self awareness came through.
I've only ever seen Theo James (Four) in this movie, so when I watched an interview with him on Jimmy Fallon, I couldn't believe his real british accent, cause he sounds so american in this movie. I know actors do this all the time, but it's only in this one case I was surprised to learn he wasn't american.
I love Tris and Four together, but if this movie was made today, I wouldn't have minded Tris and Christina to get together, with Four just being a really good friend to Tris, and them having a close brother sister relationship.

Was looking for this comment. I had no idea about this when I watched the three of them about a year ago, and was quite confused when the third movie ended, knowing it was the last one. So I did some quick Googling, and actually got a bit pissed off that the whole thing just got scrapped before the end. For me, that took the rating down on all three of them. Because however exciting they might have been, there's no ending to them!!
The 4th movie they wanted to do wouldn't have adapted any book though as however loosely they were adapting it, they finished adapting the third novel in the third film. This isn't a case of splitting the final book in two films with only the first being made like a lot of people report it.
i heard they stripped all the backstory of the third book except that one flashback, to loosely adapted it into a new story, which is why it's called Ascendant. Cool idea though, if only they made a good third movie. but also stripping all that story from the movie basically made the movie kinda lifeless for me. I dont oppose changing from the source material as long as the main spirit still in there. But cutting all the story beat and making one action movie (Yes, i don't feel there's any story in there, just action pieces), it's not the way. Escpecially considering this movie has a really good emotional story.

The entire point of the series is that a few certain special people get to be more than one thing. In reality, the vast majority of people would be divergent, so this Faction system doesn't seem believable as a post apocalyptic future at all, unless something dramatic happened to the human genome to make them far simpler than they should be.

As for Ansel Elgort ('Caleb'), he and Shailene played a couple in 'The Fault in Our Stars' (2014) - an instant classic based on the popular John Green book. You should watch the latter, it's really good, and it's a well known film. It earned $307.2 million in the box office, against a production budget of $12 million.
i'm gonna warn you now. There were supposed to be 4 movies from this series just like the hunger games but the last one was never made because the 3rd one didn't sell, so i beg you to continue watching because i really enjoy it but be already aware that its "unfinished" and trust me when I say that it's better to be unfinished than finished like the 3rd book was.

Can you watch the Maze Runner movies next? It's definitely THE dystopian trilogy you need to watch. It stands out compared to Divergent (only this film is good, I honestly don't recommend the rest) and the Hunger Games and probably will keep you on the edge of your seat 😊

The last 2 are very different from the books and they chose to keep the plot linear, but they are solid action-packed films with some really cool visuals, and great acting. 9 years and still one of the best trilogies (underrated too) - and *cast* - out there, you never feel a lack of commitment, definitely worth watching

Hunger Games (2008) did not start the young adult novels with post-apocalyptic settings. Older than Hunger Games, we have the novels The Giver (1993) City of Ember (2003), Ender's Game (1985) -- all of which have been made into movies. There are other novels as well but not all have been made into movies so I won't put them here. One other you might like is The 5th Wave (2013) but the books were published after Hunger Games; both movies came out close to the same time,
I meant the success of the hunger games franchise gave birth to the other franchises in cinema. Obvs the books were made over many years. Both divergent and maze runner came out 2 years after the success of the first hunger games film.
Hey there, I know a lot of people are commenting about the books, I too was disappointed as I had read the trilogy before watching, however, if you treat them as seperare entities (which you luckily can) I think you will enjoy this franchise.

This first movie is the closest to the book. But I really enjoy all three movies and books. 6:59 You are correct! The movie that they were in together was "The Fault in Our Stars". I keep forgetting that that's Ray Stevenson that plays Four's father Marcus. I've been so used to seeing him in the first three "Thor" movies and "Ahsoka". Fun Fact: Kate Winslet was pregnant at the time of filming. That's why most of her scenes are filmed from the waist up, or she has something in front of her stomach. Can't wait for "The Divergent Series: Insurgent" next. You definitely need to watch "The Maze Runner" trilogy after this. It's another great post-apocalyptic movie series. The books were fine, but this adaptation went south after the second film. They split the last book into 2 parts, filmed the first part, and it did so badly, they didn't film the last one.
The third film didn't do well in the box office that's why the finale film didn't made. The studio wanted to shift the fourth film into TV series but the actors didn't want that, that's why they declined the offer and resigned as the characters.

My personal opinion - the other 2 movies in the trilogy are not worth watching. On a side note, I implore you to watch The Last Of Us if you haven't yet, I'm sure you'd absolutely love it!
This hurts a little. I love the book series, and the first film is a decent adaptation. However, the next two films get so progressively shitty. If you insist on watching them, I recommend watching them with a buddy and turning them into a drinking game.
@@PaiDiMat That's fair. For me, it isn't even really about the fact that they made changes: it's that the changes served no discernible purpose except to up the action and create a spectacle. They didn't further character or narrative development, they just created a mess.
It's really wild how they were quite faithful for the most part with the first film, which worked out well commercially, and then with the second one they just randomly decided not be.
The thing about this setting that doesn't make sense is that most people would be divergent, because hardly anyone is just one thing. Unlike the HP houses, you can't be in one faction and show defining traits from another, which is bs. At least in Harry Potter, you can be smart and brave and kind, regardless of your house. Here, if you're abnegation, you cannot behave in a highly intelligent or brave way, or there's something wrong with you, which just doesn't hold true for most people.
The second film is great, too. The third, not so much. I don’t agree that Divergent got inspiration from Harry Potter or Hunger Games. They all came out about at the same time. The books were released, more or less, about the same time. I LOVE THIS FILM!!! When I am under a lot of stress I watch this film. At the beginning of this reaction, but I remember thinking it sounded like the silliest idea since everyone is “Divergent.” But when I saw the movie, the way everyone accepted this as normal made me assume they were “not quite human,” as in this is a dystopian world where humans have been slightly altered. Because otherwise, their acceptance of the status quo was very human, more like many societies and groups than the Hunger Game movies (haven’t read the books). Reminds me of other various sci fi and dystopian scenarios. A lot of people consider these movie to be very simplistic, stupid, and nonsensical. I only saw the first two, but I see them as more symbolic and psychologically realistic in ways most movies, certainly of its kind, aren’t. And also complex and difficult when it comes to making decisions (which a lot of viewers DON’T like, even if they claim to like “complicated” characters). As you say, digging up dirt from the past can be good, but it also can be bad. I think in general it’s good, but it can be misconstrued, untrue, or used to further even more nefarious agendas. And in this, there are a lot of genuinely hard situations that are more true to life. Many people who are cruel do not turn around once they “get to know you.” Some are only cruel TO those they know. That idea is hopeful but often victim-blaming; that it really is about how “special” the victim is vs the perpetrator’s problem.
Yes, you're right. I can't remember if the movies got far enough to mention this, but the idea of the world is that most of the population is faulty and that the divergents were the actual goal - to bring back balance. But then these segregated societies started attacking the divergents instead of embracing them, therefore leading to the mess in the books/films.
The mom dies so fast from just a shot in the side of the abdomen that it seems sped up for drama, yet it really isn't. One of my dad's brothers got shot from behind in the same area, & the doctors said he really was in the less than .5% of people shot there that have no major blood loss. The organs there have large arteries carrying lots of blood, especially the liver & kidneys. It doesn't take much of an injury to bleed out fast. So fast that it's not even low oxygen in the brain or heart muscle but just bottomed-out blood pressure that causes death before even the fastest ambulance can get to you. The doctors said it really was a miracle the path the bullet went through my uncle's body. He had minor injuries only, the bullet went through at just the right angle that his liver, spine & more got just a slight grazing & no actual punctures on those vital organs. His intestines were what got damaged the most & even that was clean unjuries. The worst part for his health was digestive fluids leaking out internally. Even with the surgeries to stitch the bullet wounds up & vacuum out the leaked fluids, he only needed a small amount of blood given. Now I think of my uncle every time I see a scene like that in a movie.
Reading this book and the companion series Four, will give you a better appreciation of the society. This is the best movie of the series and the best book of the series. I recommend skipping the rest of the series as far as the movies are concerned. Of course I did the Divergent books first and then watched the movies.
The second in the Divergent series should be next AND, in reading the comments section here, there seems to be a lot of interest in you watching “The Fault in Our Stars”.

Every criticism you made about Trish -- especially her immaturity -- is why I didn't like the book and never read the sequels. I watched the first movie because I fell in love with the character of Four. I watched the subsequent movies just to follow his story. I never cared for her and was never invested in her fate -- as I was with Katniss and Thomas.
I don’t like when we people see that things are story where they separate people into groups and say it’s Hunger Games. Separation is based on personality in this story. And there is no competition in it. So what’s the same besides having groups? You can’t even say the antagonist was the same because there has to be an antagonist. Every story has one. Continue the series.

From what I remember, the 2nd movie is ok, but I really wished I hadn't seen the 3rd one. My opinion has always been that a bad sequel can't influence the quality of a previous movie, but "Allegiance" and it's unresolved ending was so bad, it even made the other movies bad. I don't know how y'all see that tho
I loved the books (until the end 😠), and seeing the first movie in the theater was so enjoyable. I rewatch Divergent often, usually just for the zip line scene, which never fails to give me chills. 🥰

Random suggestion, watch Shin ultraman. It’s made by the same people who did Shin Godzilla, and is a lot of fun. Just know that if you haven’t seen the original ultraman show, some things will fly over your head. I do think you would enjoy it.
The movies completely missed the point of the books. Beatrice superpower was her ability to see through everything to the truth and to have a really amazing ethical compuss. The books take her on this journey of dealing with fear and issues about human nature. First, something is wrong because she is divergent and she is to be feared. Then something is wrong with others because they arent. In both cases a system was based on that belief. She sees both as wrong and sacrifices herself for the truth, that people arent just one thing and their blood does not determine their worth. The movies miss the point and in avoiding her sacrifice gut it.
It needs to be said, from a book perspective this is the only worthwhile movie to watch. For the second movie they strayed a lot from the original story, even changing some main plot points needlessly. The third movie is complete bs, it starts with the first chapter of the third book, but then goes on to create some weird, alternate storyline without touching the rest of the book at all. Huge mistake, which was pretty evident judging by the critics, as well as why there never became a "part 2" of that last book. Unfortunate, since the books are all great.
I read the books when I was younger and understood why she chose Dauntless but to me their whole training method was really stupid, reckless and disorganized. Which fits the personality the book is trying to portray them as but it wouldn’t work for a well-organized protection group. I’m talking about the training, not the people

There are other novels as well but not all have been made into movies so I won't put them here. One other you might like is The 5th Wave (2013) but the books were published after Hunger Games; both movies came out close to the same time,
I meant the success of the hunger games franchise gave birth to the other franchises in cinema. Obvs the books were made over many years. Both divergent and maze runner came out 2 years after the success of the first hunger games film.

So glad that you're diving into this trilogy. I'm probably one of few that actually like all three movies. This first movie is the closest to the book. But I really enjoy all three movies and books.

I keep forgetting that that's Ray Stevenson that plays Four's father Marcus. I've been so used to seeing him in the first three "Thor" movies and "Ahsoka".
Fun Fact: Kate Winslet was pregnant at the time of filming. That's why most of her scenes are filmed from the waist up, or she has something in front of her stomach.

The books were fine, but this adaptation went south after the second film. They split the last book into 2 parts, filmed the first part, and it did so badly, they didn't film the last one.
The third film didn't do well in the box office that's why the finale film didn't made. The studio wanted to shift the fourth film into TV series but the actors didn't want that, that's why they declined the offer and resigned as the characters.

I watched and read every single interview of that time, including every single Veronica Roth interview, and even listened every podcast interview of the ex-cast and ex-crew of Divergent, so there's no need to explain.
My personal opinion - the other 2 movies in the trilogy are not worth watching. On a side note, I implore you to watch The Last Of Us if you haven't yet, I'm sure you'd absolutely love it!

This hurts a little. I love the book series, and the first film is a decent adaptation. However, the next two films get so progressively shitty. If you insist on watching them, I recommend watching them with a buddy and turning them into a drinking game.

@@PaiDiMat That's fair. For me, it isn't even really about the fact that they made changes: it's that the changes served no discernible purpose except to up the action and create a spectacle. They didn't further character or narrative development, they just created a mess.
It's really wild how they were quite faithful for the most part with the first film, which worked out well commercially, and then with the second one they just randomly decided not be.

The thing about this setting that doesn't make sense is that most people would be divergent, because hardly anyone is just one thing. Unlike the HP houses, you can't be in one faction and show defining traits from another, which is bs. At least in Harry Potter, you can be smart and brave and kind, regardless of your house. Here, if you're abnegation, you cannot behave in a highly intelligent or brave way, or there's something wrong with you, which just doesn't hold true for most people.

The second film is great, too. The third, not so much. I don’t agree that Divergent got inspiration from Harry Potter or Hunger Games. They all came out about at the same time. The books were released, more or less, about the same time.

The scene with her mom was so heartbreaking. I get so mad when you re-comment saying like oh my gosh, she’s an ugly crier and like criticizing her it’s like she’s upset. She’s not supposed to look pretty. She was so raw and so real and that scene proved what a great actor she is.

Imagine what would've happened had they followed the books, particularly the last one. It ends very VERY differently.
At the beginning of this reaction, but I remember thinking it sounded like the silliest idea since everyone is “Divergent.” But when I saw the movie, the way everyone accepted this as normal made me assume they were “not quite human,” as in this is a dystopian world where humans have been slightly altered.
Because otherwise, their acceptance of the status quo was very human, more like many societies and groups than the Hunger Game movies (haven’t read the books). Reminds me of other various sci fi and dystopian scenarios. A lot of people consider these movie to be very simplistic, stupid, and nonsensical.
I only saw the first two, but I see them as more symbolic and psychologically realistic in ways most movies, certainly of its kind, aren’t. And also complex and difficult when it comes to making decisions (which a lot of viewers DON’T like, even if they claim to like “complicated” characters).
As you say, digging up dirt from the past can be good, but it also can be bad. I think in general it’s good, but it can be misconstrued, untrue, or used to further even more nefarious agendas. And in this, there are a lot of genuinely hard situations that are more true to life. Many people who are cruel do not turn around once they “get to know you.” Some are only cruel TO those they know. That idea is hopeful but often victim-blaming; that it really is about how “special” the victim is vs the perpetrator’s problem.
Yes, you're right. I can't remember if the movies got far enough to mention this, but the idea of the world is that most of the population is faulty and that the divergents were the actual goal - to bring back balance. But then these segregated societies started attacking the divergents instead of embracing them, therefore leading to the mess in the books/films.
The mom dies so fast from just a shot in the side of the abdomen that it seems sped up for drama, yet it really isn't. One of my dad's brothers got shot from behind in the same area, & the doctors said he really was in the less than .5% of people shot there that have no major blood loss. The organs there have large arteries carrying lots of blood, especially the liver & kidneys. It doesn't take much of an injury to bleed out fast. So fast that it's not even low oxygen in the brain or heart muscle but just bottomed-out blood pressure that causes death before even the fastest ambulance can get to you.
The doctors said it really was a miracle the path the bullet went through my uncle's body. He had minor injuries only, the bullet went through at just the right angle that his liver, spine & more got just a slight grazing & no actual punctures on those vital organs. His intestines were what got damaged the most & even that was clean unjuries. The worst part for his health was digestive fluids leaking out internally. Even with the surgeries to stitch the bullet wounds up & vacuum out the leaked fluids, he only needed a small amount of blood given. Now I think of my uncle every time I see a scene like that in a movie.

Reading this book and the companion series Four, will give you a better appreciation of the society.
This is the best movie of the series and the best book of the series.
I recommend skipping the rest of the series as far as the movies are concerned. Of course I did the Divergent books first and then watched the movies.
The second in the Divergent series should be next AND, in reading the comments section here, there seems to be a lot of interest in you watching “The Fault in Our Stars”.

Every criticism you made about Trish -- especially her immaturity -- is why I didn't like the book and never read the sequels. I watched the first movie because I fell in love with the character of Four. I watched the subsequent movies just to follow his story. I never cared for her and was never invested in her fate -- as I was with Katniss and Thomas.

I don’t like when we people see that things are story where they separate people into groups and say it’s Hunger Games. Separation is based on personality in this story. And there is no competition in it. So what’s the same besides having groups? You can’t even say the antagonist was the same because there has to be an antagonist. Every story has one. Continue the series.

From what I remember, the 2nd movie is ok, but I really wished I hadn't seen the 3rd one. My opinion has always been that a bad sequel can't influence the quality of a previous movie, but "Allegiance" and it's unresolved ending was so bad, it even made the other movies bad. I don't know how y'all see that tho
I loved the books (until the end 😠), and seeing the first movie in the theater was so enjoyable. I rewatch Divergent often, usually just for the zip line scene, which never fails to give me chills. 🥰

Random suggestion, watch Shin ultraman. It’s made by the same people who did Shin Godzilla, and is a lot of fun. Just know that if you haven’t seen the original ultraman show, some things will fly over your head. I do think you would enjoy it.
The movies completely missed the point of the books. Beatrice superpower was her ability to see through everything to the truth and to have a really amazing ethical compuss. The books take her on this journey of dealing with fear and issues about human nature. First, something is wrong because she is divergent and she is to be feared. Then something is wrong with others because they arent. In both cases a system was based on that belief. She sees both as wrong and sacrifices herself for the truth, that people arent just one thing and their blood does not determine their worth. The movies miss the point and in avoiding her sacrifice gut it.
It needs to be said, from a book perspective this is the only worthwhile movie to watch. For the second movie they strayed a lot from the original story, even changing some main plot points needlessly. The third movie is complete bs, it starts with the first chapter of the third book, but then goes on to create some weird, alternate storyline without touching the rest of the book at all. Huge mistake, which was pretty evident judging by the critics, as well as why there never became a "part 2" of that last book. Unfortunate, since the books are all great.

I read the books when I was younger and understood why she chose Dauntless but to me their whole training method was really stupid, reckless and disorganized. Which fits the personality the book is trying to portray them as but it wouldn’t work for a well-organized protection group. I’m talking about the training, not the people

So the movies, like the books, actually get progressively much worse. The second book/movie is just "meh" and then the third is just straight up awful. I understand wanting to finish the series out of curiosity, I just don't want you to go in with high expectations because those movies will not meet them, and neither will the books.
