Sir you are an absolute treasure. You bring solid content every time. Thank you so much!
I always learn more in the first minute of any of Rick's videos than from my previous 30 years of playing.
Haha. That's exactly what I was thinking.
This was an amazing stream as it showed me another to look at something I already saw. Much like the ambiguous image of the old woman/young woman, or the duck/rabbit.
Mind blowing. Took me 2 viewings to finally see it - thanks as always Rick, you are indeed a treasure. Thanks for taking some out of your Fathers Day to hang with us, enjoy some time with your family!
Happy Father's day Rick !
Bit of a dumb thing to say unless he's your Dad.
Happy Father's Day, Rick. I picked up the Beato book. Thanks for the discount.
Beautiful lesson. Thankyou so much Rick. I had an amazing afternoon with my pops last sunday happy father's day indeed.
The best thing about watching these videos over the years is watching you play
Love Rick's stuff...growin up as a drummer, I had to grasp a piano to find out the concepts of theory..
I still use my ears to figure out scales and stuff, but melodic patterns Rick shows here: I get a better grip on not being so shy on executing my music ideas.
It astonishes me how much I learn from these videos. Things that are already under my fingertips but never realized I could do. Rick, you da man.
Your channel has been huge for me Rick - thanks for everything. I'm a 'lapsed' musician who hasn't picked up a guitar or bass for over a decade, and you've inspired me to get back to it. I had my first jam in a decade a few nights ago, and loved it.
Happy Fathers Day. Just bought the Beato Book. This topic is very intriguing - seems like the piece I've been missing with my playing. I hope to learn much more about these concepts. Cheers...
A very useful refresher/lesson, thanks
Happy father's Day.
Just a note: father's day is not the same on all countries...
My Lord! This is a masterful lesson! One of the BEST ever on breaking down the theory with the use of the background lingering chord. This was brilliant and will certainly enhance my playing as well as any other guitar player and musician of any instrument. God bless you 4 this one!!✊🏾💯👏🏾👏🏾💣🎸🔥🔥👊🏾💪🏾🤘🏾🙏🏾😁
Holy Moley! My head exploded the first 5 minutes. The chord and scale theory left me in the dust. But the sounds and examples were oh so familiar and good to hear. Masterly played. Thanks for everything you do! Gonna buy you’re book!
This information is a big treasure to me. Rick is not only one of the best teachers ever, but also an incredible human with heavenly patience and dedication. I also see a few people in the chat making some pretty dumb comments.
Thank you very much for this deep journey into pentatonik sounds.
It's opening my head and makes me practicing even more.
Explained as it should. Great stuff Rick. For someone like myself that can't read a lick of music relating them to scales really opens a lot of doors for me. If you can put this in a book I'll be buying the first copy!
Is it weird that I've watched and liked dozens of your videos and don't play guitar? I have played woodwinds and brass, for years and I think I just enjoy the music theory. Also, I'm a music head in general. Keep doing what you do Rick. Rock On!
so thats how Chiele Minucci does it, just hella fast and precise !!!!!!! freaking cool lesson, THANKS !!!!!!!
root 2nd 3rd 5th, beautiful segment !!!!!!!
Love Chiele Minucci sound....
Rick...can't thank you enough for sharing your musical knowledge...love how you and Pierce...as well as Marty And Papa Stache have this fantastic camaraderie and appreciation of music...Loved the Carlton interview...I have picked up so much new information by catching your videos. Many blessings for you Rick...
I like that danalectro. this is a great lesson. interesting way to think of things. this is a trip . I remember my teacher showing me these types of ideas. it's such a great way to play rather than just following the progression. you get a much more interesting sound and possibilities. only thing that stumps me is where do these ideas come from yes they work great but like other things I want to know how to dissect the concept so I understand it completely maybe I just need to keep searching and it will come together like modes and chords did . this is awesome just let's me know that I've been barely scratching the surface. I'm going to be busy with this for a while. thanks Rick.
6.44 these spreads are amazing. id never came to the idea to go over so many bars
Another good lesson. A lot of this stuff goes over my head, but I always learn at least two or three things from these.
Thank you Rick, this is very helpful and I'll probably come back to it as a guide/refresher
Thanks for the instruction- translates nicely to keyboards- absolute#1 instructional podcasts
I'm a bass player doubles on guitar bass being my primary instrument I find your videos the most educational out there on UA-cam and I watch them at least a dozen times each I have learned more in the past year from your videos and I have my entire musical career is you sir are a brilliant genius
I LOVED this Hypes. I will be working on using pentatonics this way.
Thanks Hypes!
This Dan Electro is an absolute surreal beauty. And she sounds amazing !
Joe Calandrella
To reiterate:you are a treasure.
Also, nice to see the humble Danelectro being so expertly employed.
Such a fast neck, and my red version with stock tuners is nearly impossible to knock out of tune.
Superb video. I wish I found it years ago.
Gigantic Thanks Rick always, in 6 months having only played hand drums i've can now play piano guitar bass wind instruments while my hand drumming rhythms have improved greatly, simply following your creative practice ear training and theory vids. I will be eternally thankful for opening up what i never thought possible, making it so now any instrument is playable.
I play guitar 12 years . Only progress is on my hands. 0 on brain - theory. I use all stuff i know by ear. Its time to learn the guitar now. Lets practice !!! Nice Video Rick ! Oh you have to know your counterpart lives in CentralGreece :D
Can take some little part of this and practice for weeks...what an inspiration!!!
The sustainor really helps nail the concept.
Agree. I've been wanting an EH Freeze pedal for awhile and this video just made up my mind. I went out to the local Music Swap Shop with some dusty pedals I once thought I needed and made a trade for the freeze. Such a great tool - and versatile for a single guitarist in live situations
If anyone is interested, but not wanting to buy a 1 trick pony- BossTera Echo has similar abilities but with a far more expansive repertoire of tonal opportunities as it is primarily a delay but with a latch function.
Lovely stuff there Rick. Twisting my head just with your instructional stuff.
That “b5 minor pentatonic” (20:00) also works great over a dominant chord
Over E Dom use the “G# min b5 pentatonic”. In other words, the one built in the 3rd of the dominant chord. Gives you the 3, 5, 6, b7, 9
Thankyou Rick, so informative!!
So even though B is a minor scale degree in Amaj, you can play B maj pentatonic in A maj?
it's like an A lydian sound
Keeping it real! Bringing it home!
Rick, based on this video, I suggest a "What Makes This Song Great?" on a Zappa song - he sometimes used the approaches you're discussing here for his solos.
Thank you for the interviews with Frank Gambale and Larry Carlton! It'd be great if you could get a hold of Carl Verheyen, another master in the same mold as the other two!
Guru Surya great player
Reminds me of Russ Freeman and Craig Chaquico. Nicely done!
Great stuff Rick. Hope you had a nice Father’s Day.
Great lesson !!! More answers to questions I didn't know how to ask. Thanks again.
would love to see an interview with Jimmy Herring if you get a chance! pretty sure he's based in Atlanta. Have a great Father's Day!
Aaahhhhh. Soothing summer riffs. Indian blanket a girl. Lol. Thank you Rick.
rick you show me so much more beautifull way ahead. thank you !
Thx Rick and Happy Father's Day!
Frank Gambale is awesome, I got one of his books when I was young, although I wish I would have mastered alternate picking first... I had a heck of a time retraining myself to use primarily alternate picking and it wasn't easy, I still use the economy picking every now and then, but now I know when and how to use it properly. Love you brother! Domo Arigato Mr Beato!!! Happy Holidays!!!
Yeah PLINI !!
You're the BEST - I Love "Pastures" from Handmade Cities but everything on his last two records is fantastic !!
In the video, somebody asked about Eric Johnson sounding Pentatonics. Try this: instead of doing those fast sextuplet descending runs in Pentatonic boxes #1 and #4, try them in boxes #5 and #3, respectively. Say you're in E minor. The run would go from a G on the high E string to the open G an octave below, so G - E - D - B - A - G. Notice that every note you pull off "to" is from the E minor triad. Using Pentatonic Box #5, you get the notes E - D - B - A - G - E. This time the notes you pull off "from" are from the minor triad, and this has different sound.
Gotta tell you....I had a lot more fun once I started building consecutive triads instead of repeating root 3rd 5th root 3rd 5th etc etc. Much more colorful with the extended chord tones...☺
can you explain me this? its nice lesson
Root 3 5 but then continue w 7 9 11 13…that’s the whole scale played in consecutive triads
Just bought your book after watching this, great stuff
You da man Rick! Super helpful and truly grateful for this explanation!! Happy Belated Fathers Day \m/
Awwwwww , Rick Beato knows EVERYTHING>.. wow... I wish we could do brain transplants ,,, but I better get a beato book..
Excellent lesson!
Hey Brother Rick, Great video today, it was a nice continuation of the Larry Carlton discussion. Very informative! Thanks for taking time out of your Father's Day to spend with all of us!
Lary
Thanks Lary!
I have Larrys hot licks vcr tape going over these same triad and scale concepts... fantastic stuff!!
Thank you Rick! 😊
Major Inspiration, we salute you!
This is so Cool Rick ! I've been searching for more stuff like this(combinations) I have the book. But haven't uncovered there, yet! Thanks!!
thx for sharing you are teaching us all
Great work as always. Thanking you.
Really liked the LC interview.
That was so damn meditative with those kind of drones man. Like a mindfulness session. Not sure I’ll remember the hints though! 😄
Happy father's day, Rick! And thank you for playing with a clean tone on this one :-)
I love the Beato Book! Amazing lesson
Every time I hear Rick say "It's all in my book" I Riley's voice from the movie "National Treasure: Book of Secrets." 😂
I want the book so bad, I just don't know if I will be able to understand it. I have a hard time following your video's. but I keep coming back. LOL.
Thank you Rick.
Can someone tell me which pages in the Beato Book these topics are covered? _Pentatonics and triads over chords._
A Danelectro with a lipstick pickup and it sounds like that ?! Wow...wonder what it would sound like with a PRS McCarty 594 SC. Great job; love it!
Great lesson
Amazing video, thank you Mr. Beato!
Thanx for another great lesson.
Seems to me that with all these numerous options there isnt much more left NOT to play... and sound good/interesting
Came to the conclusion it all belongs to your ear and maybe ability to „feel good“ with certain sounds.
As miles used to say: there are no wrong notes, only the wrong time to play them.
At the end of the da , as you said, when creating all this tension you have to bring it back home at some point unless its just meandering around havin no goal nor target.
it's father's day hear in Canada too
here
This is great Rick! Thank you
That is some cool stuff right there.
hi Rick, that would be great if in future you talk about the fingerpicking, connection to rock history/ or not, or Chet Atkins etc there are lot of styles or subjects connected to it!
Great job..!
Hey Rick,
thanks for this great lesson!
some stuffs are confusing me a little, i’ll try to make it clear, please correct me if i’m wrong...
On a major chord you can play major pentatonics based on the 1,4,5 because it gives you all the notes of the major scale... (same for minor by the way)
In your exemple, you suggest to play major pentatonics based on 1,2,5 so it gives you A lydian which have same notes as E major so you can apply the 1,4,5 on the E scale and it gives you the 1,2,5 you suggest on A.
I guess if you want to play on a A dominant chord you can choose more like a mixolydien sound so A mixolydien contains the same notes as D major, you apply the 1,4,5 to D and it gives you D,G,A so 1,4,7 in A...
Am i correct?
Rick, what sustainer pedal are you using? Great video
Electro-Harmonix Freeze
I like the sustainer pedal 😊
I first heard this concept Ina. Scott Henderson interview
I've finally gotten around to watching.... now im pissed I've waited so long...lol
thank you!
Happy belated Farthers Day Rick for a grand dad to a dad
That was a very pleasant video. I'm going to show my ignorance, but I was hearing Holdsworth more than Larry at first.
Happy father's day. You da man!
You are talking about Modes... simple... "IF" you truly understand them... and very few actually do:) The notes in the pentatonic are all contained in the Dorian and Aeolian modes... the singer determines which. People use pentatonic to avoid making note choice mistakes.
Thanx man..! this helped me a lot & more
Yup, fathers day in Alberta, Canada
you’re awesome
Would you do a video on using the iv minor chord? never understood why that works.
Ken Hall I believe he has a video on modern iv chord substitutions
@@joethebar1 Thanks.
Please more Linkin Park! 'Points of Authority'.
A Frank Zappa "What Makes This Song Great?"... :)
Johnnie Jo Inca Roads!!
YES YES
I seized the opportunity to purchase your book. Dad's no longer around, but he was always adamant about the importance of always learning new things, so I think he'd approve of this purchase. Thank you, Rick, for the great content, and for keeping musically challenged guys like myself interested in acquiring new information.
No idea what you were talking about, but it was cool.
Can you please adopt me
Yes :)
Rick Beato LoL 😂 👍🏼
Me too please
Thanks
