I realize this video is a few years old, but I just want to comment..The crank and intermediate sprocket marks (which are shown here) line up once every 14 revolutions of the crank shaft..so, the fact that #1 is at TDC and the marks are not lined up, is not an indicator that the timing chain jumped. I doubt the chain jumped at all....What I do see is a total failure of the chain tensioners - probably due to the crank damper bolt loosing it's torque on the oil pump (or oil pump failure - not likely) which will cause the engine to loose oil pressure - and destroy the tensioner and guide system on the timing chains...

and jumping 7 teeth? thing would have exploded every piston and valve. would find a lot more than tensioner and guide chunks!

Hey Tom okay so my car is on timing just had to replace my right exhaust cam. Do you know what it's supposed to be without redoing all the timing

Wow surprised it lasted 9700 miles ...wait you said 97k ? Well then it was worth its cost
I know ppl abuse these cars when they get old, and refuse the get them serviced so let's put the blame where it belongs

    Tim,
Thank you for this interesting video. I am having a TON of noise in my 2005 NS engine and want to pull and inspect the inside. I'm curious if you pull the motor from the top or dropped out of the bottom. Thanks in advance.

this engine dropped out the bottom, it will not come out the top. These engines are not very rebuildable due to several factors the biggest being that the head bolts are prone to pulling out the threats from the block. great engine when they are working major headache when they are not. I bought a 77,000 mile engine from LKQ for 800 dollars and shipped it to Arizona for 3oo dollars. Total cost for replacement was $5008. $3900 for mechanic fees. Good luck with

Thomas Collins Your full of shit!!!Northstars are VERY rebuildable!!!There are two companys that offer head stud kits to address the pulling issues. And what your charging to do the work is highway robbery!!! SHAME ON YOU!ITS MECHANICS LIKE YOU WHO MAKE THE REST OF US LOOK BAD!!!!

@@thomascollins7131 The head bolts will pull on the older Northstar engines, not any of the newer ones.

@@KJBPSkipper It's not that it is impossible to rebuild, just it's insanely time consuming for what these cars are now worth and that you can't just pull the engine out with a standard hoist. There are also new chemical treatment methods from very specific (!!!) companies (Thermalweld) that can fix the head gasket also

So glad i got the v6 in my07 sts

koskey06 if your caddy has the 3.6 engine you are in for quite a surprise as they stretch timing chains all the time and the tensioners fail. My 06 srx 3.6 had the chains done at 69k, 84k and when they failed again at 108k I scrapped the entire truck. BTW there was a recall for 07 and up 3.6 engines hopefully its not out of date yet or you are over 110k then you are on your own. This new generation northstars finally solved the head gasket and head bolt design only to have timing chain issues lol ill never buy another Cadillac again.

Remember, I only saw the cars that had problems. I'm sure there were many that were trouble free, but I never saw any. If I told you what I think of you, UA-cam would probably cut me off, so I reluctantly won't! &%$#@
