President Rodrigo Duterte had established personal ties and was “interacting” with the people behind the mysterious Pharmally Pharmaceutical Corp., the trading company in the eye of a political firestorm for bagging P8.7 billion worth of government procurement deals in 2020, even before he took office, according to opposition Sen. Risa Hontiveros.
Angered by the “all talk” Senate blue ribbon hearings, President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to bar Cabinet members and other officials of the executive branch from appearing in the chamber’s inquiries.
The president is particularly miffed at Senators Richard Gordon and Panfilo Lacson and took potshots at them in his Monday-night “Talk to the People on COVID-19” that was aired on Tuesday.
He said the hearings were being used for political mileage and not to ferret out the truth in the government transactions being questioned.
Meanwhile, two senators are warning government agencies against using the Procurement Service of the Department of Budget and Management (PS-DBM) or the Philippine International Trading Corp. (PITC) to purchase pandemic supplies amid overpricing and corruption controversies.
Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto on Tuesday said the Department of Health (DOH) was planning to buy 758,700 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) next year for P819 million, at an average cost of P1,079 each, based on the agency’s proposed 2022 budget.
