I loved this, The 2x Ford Cortina Mk.3's are beautiful, interestingly I own a 1974 Mk3 that I bought with just 250 miles on the clock, back in 1976 (45 years ago), it has been a fantastic car, and now been restored to a brand new, rust free, mint condition shell, (the videos are on my channel), it was a massive tasks due to extensive rust following not being used for 12 years, and also own two others needing restoration a 1974 2000E , and 1975 1600 L, (both low mileage cars)

A lovely purple 2000E. How wonderfully 1974! (My school biology teacher had a 1300E Escort in that same colour)
My dad had a blue 1976 cortina estate.
They could get a wriggle on as well, happy memories
It was a lovely looking car but I hate wing mirrors. Dad had a Carnival Red XL and it looked so much better with door mirrors.
I still like the look of the Mk3 Cortina.
Note that at 2:06 Bastable does something that William Woolard usually gets 'credited' for!
For someone in the US, this was a real hoot to watch. The amount of bureaucracy just to tow a trailer (caravan) was mind boggling. Here you just got a hitch installed, hooked up the trailer, and away you went. I don't know if speed was still in MPH then or KPH. I'm assuming MPH since, even in in Britain, I can't imagine towing being restricted to 31 mph. In the US, except for a few states like California (the closest we have to British bureaucracy) that restricted towing vehicles to 55 mph, you were allowed to tow at the legal limit. You didn't need some special plate on the back of the trailer. I suppose those triangle tail lights were to warn other drivers they were about to crash into a slow moving caravan. That wouldn't have been an issue if the caravans were traveling at the same speed as the rest of traffic. Trailers here just had normal tail lights like the rest of traffic. Is that still required there?
A 22 foot trailer is nearly as small as you can get here. I did have a 14 foot Cardinal in the same time period as the show but it was barely adequate for a weekend with just a stove, icebox, a manual water pump and a sink, a couple of interior lights, and a table that converted to a very cramped bed. I towed it with a 1970 Toyota Corona and it was barely able to handle it. I moved up to an International Scout SUV and 26 foot trailer in 1976 and things were much better. Even had a shower and a loo.
The first thing you do when backing a trailer is take off your dang seatbelt! I suppose there was some regulation about that too. The program didn't include any actual tips about how to back. Once you got used to only using the bottom of the wheel and turning in the direction you wanted to go it wasn't all that hard. I've backed 35 foot trailers without much difficulty. And that periscope thing! I can't imagine what use it was in backing a trailer, and it doesn't seem like anything that could be used on the road. In almost 50 years of towing trailers I have never seen a periscope. Seems like another wacky British invention. :-)
the periscope thing never really did get used. least its the first time iv ever see one. not surprised its the stupidest thing. towing still is limited speed depending what road ur on, was in mph. although 70 mph was top speed on motor ways by then i think. it was unlimted speed limit at first but then someone got had doing 150 miles an hour in a ac cobra or a jag and as a direct result the 70mph limit was introduced... towing more complicted then ever now, training test and license for anything over 750kg. or combined weight is over 3500kg i think...? reflectors where just for when parked in the dark, sod all street lighting in alot of the uk back then. american caravans were massive !! some were longer than an avrage uk house and roads where to small and cramped to handle them. air streams looked like thay were from outerspace when i first saw one. the GMC motor home 1973 looked like it was a top model back in the 70s.
Totally agree on the periscope nonsense gadget. For the rest of the bureaucracy, it's pretty much par for the course here in South Africa too - the authorities are pedantic in so far as tow vehicle weight versus caravan weight is concerned. By the way - here a trailer is mostly the term used to refer to a luggage trailer : Google "Venter Trailers South Africa" and you'll see what I mean. Accommodation "trailers" are always called a Caravan.
You really do have a bee in your bonnet about bureaucracy don't you! Also some very odd assumptions about our way of life. We use MPH and Imperial measurements on our road signs -- a ten-second Google search would have shown you that! Can you imagine caravans being towed at 31mph!?
Thankfully caravan ownership in Britain is fairly simple. We still have rules and regulations on them (which is why our roads are statistically the safest on Earth), but for the most part it's just a common sense approach. There must be millions of them in the UK, but most are static caravans meaning they don't have to be lugged about our ancient roads.
I'd conclude by saying our choice of holidays are just simply different to your lot. I'd much rather rent a Bed and Breakfast (hotel) or cottage in the countryside that have to drive 30 ft. of living space behind me. Too stressful! Holidays are for relaxing :)
Wow, an American bitching about bureaucracy in Europe! Any thoughts about the election process in the US? About the fucking nightmare of Brazil(the movie)-like bureaucracy many US citizens have to go through just to get the right to vote? I am not talking about 1850's US, nope, I am talking about 2020s US, bub. You've got no idea what fascist federation you are living in...

He couldn't have dented the caravan. The worst he could do was put a ding in the fiberglass cover over the propane tank, and I didn't even see evidence of that.
Sar Jim you can hear it crease at 0:50 and see the dent afterwards at 1:43. Some earlier gas lockers were aluminium
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 The sound at 0:50 sounded more like an ignition being switched off. I stepped through the video up to 1:43 and that's the first time I can see the whole gas cover. The dent is there, but i can't tell if it was there before the segment started or not.
I used to have an outfit like that but didn't wear it as well. Love these videos very nostalgic.

If I recall correctly, the oil coolers were standard accessories for automatic transmission cars if you wanted to tow. People who are older and wiser than I, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
@@andrewjones-productions Depends on the weight you were towing, some small caravans were not much heavier than 4 fat people in the car!
Oil coolers were necessary on larger engined cars.

A Europa, not sure what model. This brings back memories, my Dad bought a new Sprite Major in 1973 he towed it with a K reg Zodiac. We went to the Italian lakes and I remember Dad blasting up the Brenner at 80mph!!!!
Yes it's a Sprite, they were known as CI, before merging with Wilk, thus forming CI Wilk, in 1964.

Never heard of one of those either, but ironically, their usefulness (well, their functionality) is now standard in lots of cars. That being the rear view camera when reversing! Change in hardware and what was once naff and a faff to use suddenly becomes cool and easy to use!

hippie\mod trends to 80's power suits and leggins. Fashion and colors of 70s really expressed mood of those times.
That outfit is cool as....and bang in fashion. I'd pay a fortune for those jeans. Wide leg, flared and loose fit jeans have come back. So has double denim. Me? I've over 100 pair of jeans and dozens of denim jackets.
