I really wish Smaug had been a buildable part of the set. They could've made it SO much bigger and meaner

Smaug looks good but would be better if he was bigger. In the movie he was huge compared to Bilbo.
Yeah he's twice the size of a jumbo jet in the movie

I bought all the other lotr and Hobbit sets when they came out (except for a few polybags without anything exclusive, and promotional items), this is the only one I didn't end up being able to get. Recently I found it for $175 sealed, hoping to get it for my birthday coming up in September. Came back to see what Jang thought, even though I'm probably getting it no matter what!

I'm looking at the set at the moment aswell. I can and probably will buy it for roughly 200 USD sealed, which is quite a lot, but this set is amazing, mainly because of Smaug.
I want the next medieval theme to be heavily dragon based. Especially with what they did with Smaug here, I think it would have the potential to be really cool and have a lot of variety
You know what would have REALLY made the set? A large 10x10 inch poster that just has a top-down view of all the gold like on the box art :)

actually i really like how they did the arkenstone. they probably didnt realize it while making the set but the arkenstone was actually found in a rougher shape and had then been worked on and stuff so it became prettier lets say so you could play that they chiseled down the arkenstone and remove the lego chima stone thingy! :D

The 3 dwarves included in this set plus Thorin are the 'main ones' so LEGO chose to include them over other dwarves who were actually there because there wasn't space for them in other sets...

I really love the over all form of the structure. It's very stylized, yet still packs in a bunch of funtions and isn't majorly gappy anywhere.

Well , perhaps lego didn wanna make smaug gold because it isnt his original color. also maybe lego didnt get permission from the moviemakers or something like that.

I think this set looks great. It is very respectable to the look and feel of the Hobbit, even after going through the whole process of production that requires a certain amount of pieces for price, play values, size, etc. Smaug looks amazing, and could easily be the sole reason to buy the set. The sand green is a great color, and the gold just adds to that great look. Ever since I played the 2003 The Hobbit video game on the PS2 back when I was younger, I have always wanted Hobbit sets, and LEGO hasn't disappointed with these great sets based on the wonderful movies!

Wowowowowow haven't seen sand green in a new set in bulk for a while O.o And holy crap the dragon is done phenomenally well.
I think that the set would have been better if Smaug was to scale because in the movie Smaug's eye was as big as Bilbo. but I guess it probably would have been too big for a Lego

I am SO all over this set.....Outstanding review. It answered all of my questions and removed any hesitation I had about buying it. All new tooling for the Dragon, especially the wings and posability really works for me. I was afraid it would be a rehash of the Ninjago or Castle dragons. And like you said, the sand green and pearl gold just work well together. ;)
Smaug is described in the behind the scenes of the Hobbit as being the size of a Boeing 747, so it's no surprise he couldn't be that big in the set, I think they got it close enough to still seem formidable.
I used to want this like my life depended on it but now it's not as good as I remember
i got this set and smaug really is just amazing. also you get a spare printed arkenstone piece, so i just put that among the huge gold mound, whilst the bigger arkenstone is on the thone

I love how this set looks and has a lego figure of smaug...I loved the movie if I had the money I would go looking for this set and get it..i'm a big lotr fan and a hobbit fan they both have a great story to them both and this set is like a dream come true to finaly have a newly sculpted dragon mold and I would love to have this in my hands

The 1×1 round plate on the Arkenstone would be good for the cockpit of a mini tie fighter.

I like except Kili is an Archer and there should be Thorin ( son of Thrain son of Thror king under the mountain ) but I love the actual builds and I like the mining peice too

they say smaug is a dragon, but he's actually a wyvern. he doesn't have front arms - instead they are replaced by wings with claws, like a wyvern.

I think the arkenstone should not have the chi part, that would look nicer and would have a much more approximate size.
