Edit: Also next proper video is right around the corner! Talking about how miserable snow could be in military history!
Thank you for sharing your amazing work with all of us
Thank you in turn!@@avifrankel983
As a student of history I thank you for all that you have done for the historical community. I have learned so much from you channel and I plan to learn more. Thank you for everything
As a person also writing a book, I can imagine how is it. I would be interested, do you also write something and then you are like "well this is shit" ? Unfortunately, I am poor so I can not buy
Haha, well it depends on what I am writing, really! Typically I am very confident in my writing of scripts and they don't take much re-writing. But something this formal, absolutely, I will write and re-write a few times over before I am fully happy with the results. @@frantisekcenek1199
I'm poor and can't pay for this yet, but by God's name I'll try to make it reach as far as I can.
Always take care of yourself first and foremost! It's only a book, and it won't be going anywhere!
I’ve been a sub of Brandon since the very beginning. Like a parent seeing their kid drive for the first time; I’m proud to see Brandon’s growth.
Yours is a name I remember well! Thanks so much for your support. It’s been a great journey!
I'm a US Army veteran of three active duty tours of Iraq, and five more of Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Iraq again as a contractor. I look forward to this book, for a different PoV on things that are something that haunts my memories every day.
I hope the book can do right by people like yourself!
Wow, congratulations!! This looks like a great book.
I sure hope it will be! So far everything is coming together very nicely.
i love how clever it is that the name originates from such a grim quote
I think that quote has stuck with me more than anything I've ever read. It's just such a beautiful and tragic sentiment, and it really reflects everything I am hoping to get across with this series.
You and Atun-Shei have become some of my favorite creatives in the past year or so. Thank you for all the quality work put in to providing such detailed and accurate retellings of history! You two have totally changed how I look at history and y'all encouraged me to start looking deeper on my own. Ill be supporting this book and cheers to the hard work 🎊🥂
Hey, just saw I didn't reply to this, but I am trying to reply to all the comments on this video. Sorry about that- and thank you all the same for the kind words! I'm glad you feel that way and appreciate the support!
Looking forward to buying, suits you better then some UA-camr shirt etc
I agree! I enjoy being able to have things like posters and mugs to sell on my site, but I think publications are far more productive and interesting.
Brandon to Brandon, respect brother! Congrats on the book!!
Much obliged, thank you!
I will certainly pre-order this!
seems like a very good read
That is much appreciated, thank you! And I certainly think so too- I'm really excited for all of the articles. The best part about this kind of project is that, since I'm not the only author, I basically get a new book by the end of it all too!
Thanks!
Thank you right back! That is very generous!
Bless you Brandon. You explained yourself well. I've been following for years. I hope this becomes a regular thing too. I just put in my pre-order now. Free WORLD WIDE SHIPPING !!!
Haha, assuming yours was the most recent, your shipping will be a bit more on my end than the average! But that's okay- I really appreciate the support! It goes a long way towards helping me to fund the project and make it bigger in future!
@@BrandonF Yup, that would've been me. Hopefully, it all averages out. Good luck with the project. Fingers crossed for you.
It definitely does, no worries!
Oh, my gosh! What a fantastic idea!
I pre-ordered 'Something Like Philosophy." For anybody interested in this theme of human suffering in European warfare in the Early Modern period, I highly recommend Lauro Martines' "Furies."
Thank you very much!
This is definitely I would like to support. I think we should generally encourage more people doing those kind of projects who are passionate in their historical topic and with the democratization thanks to the Internet it's quite possible.
I'm looking forward for further projects! Greetings from Salzburg.
And I am very thankful it accepts PayPal.
Thank you! Apologies for not replying sooner, I somehow missed your comment. But I appreciate the support and hope you enjoy the book!
Just bought it love your long videos on the esoteric parts of war and history thanks for all the interesting videos over the years id really like to see a book or videos on the early moderm period such as the thirty years war
I definitely need to learn more about the 30 Yrs War, it’d be a great topic! And thank you for the pre order, I really appreciate it!
Long time viewer, first time commenting, looks amazing ! Looking forward to this
Thanls for your viewership, and the kind words! I hope you enjoy the finished product!
Amazing! Can’t wait!
Thank you!
I pre-ordered Something Like Philosophy because Brandon has been vital in my pursuit of becoming a historian. I have been watching him since I was a freshman in high school and I am now a sophomore in college. Brandon's videos have been so influential on me and every day I think of the quote he said probably 2-3 years ago when he said, "History is not about the coat but the soldier who wears it." Brandon is one of the original people who sparked my interest in perusing academic history rather than just thinking the American War for Independence is cool lol. I cannot wait to read it and the perspective of those contributing to it.
Comments like this are always so surreal and sweet for me to see. The idea that my videos have helped to spark your interest in history is wonderful and the fact you’ve been watching so long makes me feel very old! I appreciate your support and thanks for the preorder! I am sure you’ll love the book- just got the first article draft in today and it’s looking amazing so far!
Your honesty about financial incentives for personal gains is very refreshing
I am glad you think so!
Just ordered mine, can’t wait. Thank you for your dedication to history.
I appreciate it, thank you very much!
Congratulations Brandon! I am really looking forward to buying it!
That's great to hear- thank you!
This sounds real interesting!
Thank you!
I wish you success.
Thank you!
This is a fascinating project Brandon! Very intriguing!
Thanks so much! Glad to hear you think so!
i hope this does well, you would deserve it
I appreciate it, thank you very much. Seems to be going well so far!
As a author, I congratulate you. I am eager to read this magnificent book already.
Thank you! So am I!
Looking forward to this.
Glad to hear it!
i love your super professional video with no issues regarding teleprompters whatsoever!
Of course everything I do is fully off-the-cuff with no need for such modern tech as a 'tele-prompter'!
Im so Happy for you
Thank you!
I’m buying it tonight!
I appreciate that, thank you!
This seems like an interesting book. I’ll have to check it out eventually.
I appreciate it, thank you!
Nice job, Is your colleague Chris the Red Coat a contributor?
Not for this first volume, his schedule didn't allow for it. But Chris may contribute in future! If you look at my community tab you'll see all the names that have been announced so far.
congrats on your book man, may it sell well
Thank you!
you're welcome@@BrandonF
I hope to be able to buy it one day, but i’m a minor plus money tight for me, but i wish you luck in this venture
It will always be there for when/if you want to pick it up! No rush!
I need it
This seems like it would be a super interesting book to read!
I appreciate it, thank you! I think so too.
Dude thats awesome news 😊
Thank you!
I would get this book, but I already have enough trauma after watching the beach landing scene from Saving Private Ryan lol.
That’s fair! The tone of the series is definitely not for everyone haha.
Hello Brandon, this sounds like an engrossing, informative, educational and valuable read. Would you in time make it available via Amazon, Barns & Noble etc.? No doubt that would increase sales considerably. Thanks, I enjoy your channel. 💂💂♂💂♀⚔
Thank you, I'm glad you think so! And yes, once the book is ready it will be published via Amazon and available for sale there.
Hope you don't mind me sharing it with my friends.
Not at all, please do!
@@BrandonF Thank you very much. So far people are liking the book idea.
On a slightly different topic, when you hear of people thinking of stuff like line formations or other military ideas asking why they did this or that, ask them how thyley would do it better and why they think it wasn't done in reality.
Exactly- there was a reason for it all!
Hello Brandon. Best wishes as always with this.
Note, I am one of those stuck in time, that have never bought anything via internet, but I hope that many less old fashioned viewers respond favorably to your "Superbowl advert".
I am curious to see how you fit all that on the tin.
I grew up listening to my father's tales of injuries and bodies, from his time in the Royal Navy as the equivalent of a medic and his time in the police, who realised he was used to this, but even he was shocked when he discovered the road casualty was a friend, decapitated by a split windscreen, after a minor bump. If only war casualties were stopped by something like the invention of toughened glass?
If only, indeed. Thanks Alan! Things seem to be going well with it so far!
Just dont quit til it's done, Brandon. Thats all that matters.
Certainly not! Things are progressing very nicely!
"War is war and hell is hell, and of the two. War is a lot worse." Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce
You know I never have seen that show…
@@BrandonF I really liked it. My grandfather who was a Korean War veteran watched it a lot. Though occasionally they do mix up the Korean War with the Vietnam War.
Also you should see the movie which the show is based on starring Donald Sutherland. Its a bit darker than the TV show.
Huh, I didn't know it was based off a film! That sounds like a better time commitment than a whole TV show, I will have to look into it.
as someone who has spent a bunch of time in the military
1- privation is not something most normal people understand, perhaps - SUFFERING
2- You might want to indicate the suffering in death - you do not always just die it can take months
3- You might want to also indicate the effect on the families of the soldiers and there communities ( and those they pass through )
sadly, I am lacking in funds ( not uncommon to those in the military )
Definitely all things that I am hoping future articles will discuss in depth, and I’m sure many will touch on as they relate to their themes, for sure!
Okay, i'm interested!
I hope it sells well, there isnt much good history being popular these days and it'd be good if something like this made it big
It seems to be doing so so far!
God I want to buy it. Alas, I'm pretty poor and going back to school soon.
It's going onto the Christmas list though! Someone will buy it for me. :D
I'm honoured it has a spot on the list! And hey, by that time, there may even be two books in the series!
@@BrandonF If that's the case then that'll be on the list too!
keep up the amazing work Brandon :)
By the way, is the cover inspired by the famous war painting titled "The Two-Thousand Yard Stare"?
Yes, 110%. It was originally commissoned by myself as a poster and I found something of a new life for it here.
Edit: Here is the original artist if you'd like to see more of his work, www.artstation.com/manu67
Hey, Brandon
Out of curiosity, is there a way for people to apply to be contributors to future volumes? I myself might not have much to say on the subject, but I know a handful of guys who are very knowledgeable on the South American wars of independence, and oftentimes write articles on local history magazines about stuff like this.
I don't have a way for people to apply right now because I want to make sure that the project will be able to fund itself before dedicating to another one. But when the time comes, absolutely, there will be a formal application process to write for future editions. I will make a video announcing the call for papers.
Hi is there going to be a audio varient for us that have a hard time reading
I cannot make any guarantees right now, but I am hoping to get an audio book version eventually. It largely depends on the sales figures but it’s looking good so far.
If I could I would pre-order it right now; alas I cannot. This series, "something like Philosophy", is actually one of the most interesting ideas I've ever heard. I do think the title might be too pretentious (can't find the word), though. Symposium and Privation aren't too common words in a person's vocabulary, so, as a suggesting from a viewer, maybe consider changing the title somewhat to appeal to the broader public.
That’s fine, the series will always be there for you when you’re able to pick it up! Thank you. And, maybe worth considering for the title, but I do like the sound of it myself.
Looks like the kind of book I'm interested in checking out ASAP. BTW, are you going to do an autograph for anyone who pre-ordered your book earlier?
Glad to hear it! And, I haven't quite worked out how I'll be able to do such, but I am hoping to be able to offer such yes. But don't go buying anything with that being the intent, in case it doesn't work out!
@@BrandonF Autograph or not, I'll still buy it. Because why not.
Hello! Great work on this project. I'm really interested. Can I ask: is there oging to be an audiobook version? This would be reallyv aluable for me because I have to spend all day chasing after kids or travelling to work, and listening is a really good option for me, compared to reading.
By the way, I've always loved your work. I've gone ahead and pre-ordered. Can't wait for it to come out, but take your time, don't kill yourself just to get it out to us! :)
I appreciate it, thank you very much! As to an audio book, it is something that I would definitely love to put together assuming that the sales figures are good enough to justify it. I would want to hire a professional voice actor/reader for it is the main reason.
Brandon F do you have plans to buy The Last King Of America and read it sometime this year?
Not specifically, no. There's an awful long reading list!
Sadly I cant buy it😢
That’s fine- I appreciate your being here all the same!
i havent been around for awhile but what happened to your Asssassins creed videos?
I took them off the main channel because I didn't think they were thematically that appropriate, but the VODs are now on my Patreon as a bonus there.
The pricetag on this wealth of historical knowledge on a broad range of topics which directly supports independent contributers is only the the same price as the ticket on just one succulent chinese meal? Seems absolutely worth it to me.
You shouldnt feel bad about shilling a high quality passtion project B)
I see you know your judo well.
And also your complimentary words, which are much appreciated. I'm glad you think it's a fair price! Though the final product will likely end up around 19 dollars via Amazon's self publishing programme.
@@BrandonF
$19 is one meal out plus good tip nowadays, and most books on the shelf of the same quality are $40 or more. The pricing would be beyond reasonable even if it reached $25+
If this book is a really big success, and I have the funding to make the next one much bigger with more contributors, it's possible the price will get up to around that range. But I definitely want to keep it as accessible as possible.
why did you leave the 54th?
I moved away from the area that they operate in, as well as a few professional differences in how I would have preferred to see the organisation run.
@@BrandonF Oh okay so you mean organisation was better before or has it always been that way, and what was wrong with the organisation, anyways thanks for actually replying (like most youtubers dont) You can always trust Brandon
It is the sort of discussion that I don't feel the need to get into. I haven't been a part of the organisation for a few years now and so I can't speak to how things are currently or whether things have changed.@@TheAdmiral8799
@@BrandonF Okay that's fine thanks for replying so quick
@@BrandonF oh yea and one more thing, are you in any reenactment group currently or are you going to join one or have you quit reenacting as a whole?
Don't be so self-critical of yourself making money on this and other projects. You can't fault a man for making a living. The channels that I watch and follow I expect the person or people running them to be making money.
I don’t see a problem with making money, it’s more just talking so openly about it I suppose!
