It takes a lot for a dr to have to admit to a family that he messed up. This family took it wonderfully and knows that Dr’s are humans and make mistakes. No one is perfect and it’s really good for people to see and know that aren’t either. They do their best and that’s all any of us can ask for💖💖💖💖
are you kidding me??? The surgeon hooked up the wrong 'tubes'. That's like amputating a leg on someone who needs an appendectomy!!! There's no telling what those days on the ventilator/ bypass machine will do to the baby's ability to thrive. "Drs are humans and make mistakes"? That's what malpractice insurance is for. This doctor needs to be on review and all the baby's medical bills need to be paid by the hospital. and he should NOT have been allowed to do the second operation. He's a liability.
Those parents were so understanding and nice about the mistake Dr. Meyers made. I would like to think I would be as nice when it came to my baby having to suffer more because of it. We are all human though...and THANK GOD there ARE such gifted and courageous doctors/surgeons out there willing to learn how to do these things and then perform it. I cannot imagine the stress they are under!!!!
He was a little to confident. Thank God everything turned out ok, and maybe it was enough to humble him a little. I'm sure it was very difficult to admit his error and the family appreciated that
My grandson was born with a heart defect called truncus arteriosus. He a a long surgery at 6 days. He swelled pretty much after surgery so he had to have his incision open a a big tegaderm. We could look in his chest and see his heart beat. He had a 2nd open heart surgery at 3 years and received so fast. Last check was good. Thank you Drs for all you do for the delicate babies. My grandson was operated on at St Francis in Peoria Illinois.
It isn't unusual to pack the chest open after such a big heart surgery. It makes it easier and safer to intervene if needed. You also don't want to keep opening and closing because of the formation of scar tissue each time. Scar tissue can make surgery more difficult.
To be fair, a newborn heart is the size of a chicken heart. They are tiny, as are the vessels. Moving two vessels that small in such a miniscule area is impressive. It would be easy to not get it right. Michael would not have lived without the surgery
Michaels parents behaved how everyone should in those circumstances. Everyone does make mistakes. Their attitude gave him the ability to fix it without any more stress than he already felt.
Ummm... No. This is a Cardiac Surgeon... this is what he DOES. He should have known when the blood was circulating back from what SHOULD have been the lungs was DARK, that something wasn't right. If he'd have been paying attention, he would have seen that HE connected it wrongly to the pulmonary **artery** instead of the pulmonary **vein**. Then, after discovering his mistake, he shrugs it off and says "Well things just weren't the way we wanted them".... YEAH because HE connected them wrong! Because of his mistake, the child went through days of suffering and could have died. Yes, everyone makes mistakes - even doctors. But when you make a mistake there are consequences. I would have sued him to remind him there are consequences for not paying attention. He screwed up MUCH more than this show indicated.

The first 2 episodes I watched were really good. It was All Medical. Now it’s cruise ships, Queer Relationships and nurses who should never even date because life is all about them. Nurses are kinda like Cops and Firemen. They are married to their professions. I know this is Real Life but thankfully - “I don’t have to watch it anymore.”
Poor Jeff his wife is soooooooo annoying and pathetic .....hey Jeff run and run fast and very far away I fell sorry for Jeff u might be able to do a lot better
Remember when they were still in the O.R. at the end of the first surgery, and someone said "The blood coming into the aorta is dark" ? Well: The blood is supposed to circulate from the right side of the heart to the lungs, where it is oxygenated, then to the left side of the heart. From there it is pumped out to the rest of the body, via the aorta, and supplies oxygen to all the tissues of the body. So, the blood coming into the aorta should be bright red because it has just been freshly supplied with oxygen after going throughout the lungs. That was a sign something was wrong early on, even before they transferred Michael out to the NICU, and that's why they had to keep him on the heart/lung bypass machine. The machine was oxygenating Michael's lungs, so he did OK while on it, but every time they tried to wean him off of it he tanked. Finally they took him to the heart catheterization lab, and at 24:43 you hear Dr. De Moor say "Looks like the left atrium is connected to the main pulmonary artery" - that's when they knew what went wrong. Any plumber can make errors, even pediatric cardiologists, and I'm glad the parents were gracious enough to forgive Dr. Clark. That gave me some faith in humanity, that not everyone just flares up and wants to sue at the first indication ! Dr. Clark felt bad enough already...He IS only human, just like all of us. So the take-home is that the left atrium was connected directly to the main pulmonary ARTERY, instead of the pulmonary VEIN......so it was not going throughout the lungs and picking up oxygen. I was so relieved to see that Michael did recover well after the second surgery.
what does that even mean??😂 she made it clear she wants to be the best doctor possible for her patients and you think shes too ‘in love with herself’??
@@what_do_you_want898 thank you so much because I am a Dr emergency theatre and I’m sorry but if I was on the other end of the knife I don’t want someone that thinks close enough is good enough. You want that person that has that one goal and that’s nothing less than perfection. And yes everything and everyone else has to accept that. The same as all people in the emergency services those around them understand the long hrs and the job.
Uuummmm I don’t know what you are expecting but this is it. It’s not clean and scripted like Hollywood, this is my craft what I do and love. Working in emergency medicine may look like chaos but it’s a very controlled environment in the team where everyone knows their job and know communication is essential in every situation. So really disappointed.
Yeah. I mean Patrick Coleman had one of the most difficult trauma cases right there- retro peritoneal bleed with liver lac and pelvis fracture. Idk how he survived tbh. Probably because they were quick to get him to OR without doing scans and doing great job with transfusion work
Dr. Coen is your typical i know it all dr. I understand wanting them to get it right but he just wants to be a peacock. This behavior causes alot of good drs to give up medicine. Its like being in highschool getting bullied every day.
A little bit about Dr. Cohn. Did his education at Berkeley, Stanford, UCSF, and Harvard. Was in the medical honor society- AOA. Trained under Dr. Norm Shumway, who did the first heart transplant in the US. And he pioneered mitral valve replacement while a professor at Harvard for over 40 years. Definitely a character- a Boston doctor told me a story about how he clashed with Dr Cohn over a pt’s treatment plan. But without a doubt a great surgeon despite some impersonal traits. He died a few years ago
I’m in med school right now. I look up to Dr. Cohn as a role model. Though I acknowledge he was a tad rough around the edges. I think it’s important for docs to be more empathetic in our era- seems there might have been too much tough love back in the day.
many of them do now. It has been shown that people are much more willing to forgive when someone owns up to their error, instead of finding out by some other route. I know that I feel doubly pissed when I find out that someone wronged me AND then lied to me about it. If a person owns it and then makes it right, people feel differently about it.Malpractice suits are usually more about relationships than about mistakes. If a doc has been arrogant or disrespectful, or just hasn't communicated well with the patient and family, they feel wronged and want retribution, so money will do - even though it can't undo the harm that was done. Even more amazing that these parents were forgiving, because we are mother and father bears with our children and want to make sure no harm comes to them. The fact that Michael recovered was a huge factor I'm sure.

Understandable concerns after this case. Problem is can an error like that happen in surgery as a legit complication? If so, then you can’t sue for misfeasance. However, it two weeks to ID the mistake. That could be grounds for tort.
DO YOU HAVE A MEDICAL DEGREE ??? FOR THAT DECISION SHOULD BE LEFT UP TO THE PARENTS TO DECIDE FOR WHAT IS IN THERE CHILD BEST INTEREST AND NOT FOR YOU TO SAY WHAT THAT BABY NEEDS OR DOESN'T NEED PLUS YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW THE BABY WHOLE ENTIRE MEDICAL BACKROUND

As a matter of fact, MGH ended their pedi cardiothoracic program in 2009 due to not getting enough cases. So in Boston only Children’s is doing pedi cardiothoracic surgery. Understandable why.
