  • In this video Geoff Calver takes us thru the Black Magic of Coal firing. In this case it is a LMS Garratt Gauge 1 built by Barrett engineering. Geoff shows us all the tricks of how to do it and he being a driver on the real engines himself, knows a lot about coal firing. Many thanks for sharing all this knowledge with us.You did a great job Geoff.

Gauge 1 is such a small section of an already small hobby. It's hard to find educational gauge 1 videos. Thank you for posting this.

I am glad that this was of any use to you. There is much more on my channel, just have a look around, more than 700 video`s.

Marvelous locomotive and excellent instructional video. Also as I have said many times that the social aspect of this hobby is part of the enjoyment of running trains.
Thank you for sharing this video.

Many thanks Peter for your kind words, and yes it is a great engine. We had a small gathering of four people with the right distance and it was great to be together again. Kind Regards, Bram

Yes Graham, I can tell you that coal firing is great and Geoff Calver is very experienced with it, so we all are lucky that he did this master class in front of the camera. We all can learn a lot from him.

As the LMS said in an old video. "Little and Often." Thanks for the share. That was a great little engine. He should be proud of it.

    Bonjour Bram,
Thank you and thanks to Geoff for this great video. What a locomotive as support , that helps :+)
Feeding the fire box is not obvious, this huge locomotive is small in fact and needs a lot of coa added permanently. But coal is the Graal for the steam passionate I am, even if the launch procedure requires a lot of patience. To my opinion, the best moment of this ride is at the end of the video when the train starts slowly, it sounds fully realistic.
Who said you were a lucky man :+) ?
    Amicaement, Raphaël
