How quickly do you mail out seed orders? I live very near you, is it possible to pick up an order?
Since learning them a few years ago, my 'go to' raised bed/container mix has been and continues to be your recipe from a few years ago containing manure, peat, topsoil & granular fertilizer & a touch of garden lime. I also rely on your sterilized seed starting mix recipe containing sterilized peat, vermiculite, & then adding worm castings. I like the sound of todays new recipe it's nice to have alternative 'options' using whatever is available nowadays. Your recipes work wonderfully & thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge & making gardening more affordable and accessible! 🍄🌶🧄🧄🥒🥕🧅🍇🍅🍆🥔🌿
They are tried and true. And I agree options are good because I am aware not everybody has access to what is in my area. Affordability is really my goal, as the bagged 'premium' stuff is really not as good as what I just made.

I just purchased 2 bags of peat moss at Menards for $14.99 each bag of 2.2 CF same brand. Plus I get 10% off rebate. We just cut down a huge tree last fall and the guys shredded it and left a huge pile next to my garden so that's free stuff. I added the leaves and greens from mowing the lawn in the fall. My husband just added a truck load of cow manure from a local organic dairy farm. Plus he throws the ashes from our wood burning stove over the garden all winter long and tills all that stuff into the garden. I almost forgot the worm castings. We are just using the wood chips in the walking paths between the rows to suppress weeds.
Great video, I’m sure but I just wanna take a second for gratitude. I am so thankful I have acres of fabulous organic, nature-created soil for my new gardens. I just want to thank the trees, the elements and the organisms that created my beautiful garden soil.
Cool.

$13 to $24 wow that's a huge jump in price. I do agree making your own potting soil is better. (It is also fun. Who doesn't like playing in dirt)

I was glad I had most of a bag of peat moss from last year when I saw the prices increase, my county recycling center offers free compost and mulch and it's been integral in making this mix on a small budget. Last year I mixed worm castings in with your recipe for seed starting mix after cooling - seedlings did great but this year I decided to save the worm castings for the planting hole with some leftover granular and simply start my seeds later/plant them out sooner - most won't need weeks of fertilizer indoors. This is such a great all purpose mix that can be tweaked for individual needs, the one thing I change is my beds/containers for carrots and other root vegetables is less compost, and more pearlite right along the rows (like a "this seems silly" amount of pearlite, but it finally was the change that got me success with carrots last year!).
Excellent on county products. That is a great source. An thats a great mix. Please subscribe

Can't find Leafgro in my area but a 2.2 cu ft bag of peat is still around $15-16. Lose some, win some. :) I mix my own soil as well - I use a big kiddy pool. BTW - your "soil recipe" basics saved my raised beds last year when I got less than stellar stuff from a local supplier. You can take any of these basic components and amend planting mediums for better results. I am proof. Thanks Gary!
Glad to help. Kiddie pool is a great idea.
If you have access to leaves, you can make your own “Leaf Mold”. You can find lots of videos on it. For mine, I used a lawn mower to shred the leaves, placed them in heavy duty black contractor plastic bags, poked a few holes in the bottom and then saturated the leaves with water. Over the year, I periodically made sure all the leaves were damp. Eventually, the leaves all broke down into hummus.
@@kaylakitty3814 I definitely make use of available leaves from my yard for "Leaf mold" - have been doing it for a couple of years. I fill a 4'x4'x4' bin every year. It just doesn't make as much as I would like and I don't have enough space or leaves to make more.
@@ceecee-thetransplantedgardener I understand. Isn’t it crazy how much the leaf volume changes from the start of the process to the end!
I would agree perlite isn't always necessary, but my succulents love it and in colder climates it buys us time at the end of the growing season where the roots would often rot out in heavier soil.
Yea better for succulents for sure

I just realized it was your videos i watched when i was setting up my first raised bed 2 years ago and didn't want to buy the $$$ bagged stuff. Learned alot of valuable info from your videos. I'd since been using your technique of mixing your own. Too bad about the peat moss price increase though. 😢

Gary, thanks for all you do to inspire us newbies to jump into gardening. I have a couple of questions. Considering peat moss is compressed, should I use the expanded volume in mix recipes? Also I started a large shredded leaf mould pile in the fall which is starting to break down but has a way to go. Could I use this in the mix if using for raised beds or will it consume nitrogen as it continues to break down? Thanks.
Great ideas .. thank you 👍
Thanks

You can use any compost such as bulk, it doesn't really matter what brand, they all come from various sources that contained their own unique composition of npk and micronutients. I usually buy the cheapest compost or even cow manure because they all are just fillers, if you think about it like hydroponics only think of a soiless component that used to hold the plant and roots in a container full of water but you add nutrients to the reservoir which is the same as soil containing the same ingredients. Sometimes the compost may be lacking so npk ingredients are added such as bonemeal and etc.
Thanks

I'm watching your channel and learning for my first veggie garden. Thank you! I bought some bagged garden soil to mix with peat for my base mix. How do I know how much to adjust the amount of peat I mix in if the garden soil also contains peat?
Welcome and congrats on getting started. You dont have to be too specific. If it is garden soil not quite potting mix. You can go with like 2/3 garden soil and 1/3 peat. Some gardens oil are heavy and it's okay to do 50-50.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you so much. I appreciate the encouragement. I will check out the seed and garden shop and other affiliations. Thanks again!
I have some hardwood (mostly oak) shreds left from sawing seasoned (1yr) firewood last Oct that I bagged up and stored. I had hoped to use them as a filler in the bottom of a raised bed. I worried about the nitrogen issue so I have not used them yet. They are still light colored and there is only a small amount of dust. Could I use this as the hardwood mulch for this mix with my mushroom compost and sphagnum peat moss??? I am so excited to announce that after peeking into your garden, I have installed my first cattle panel trellis!!! Thank you so much for sharing your ideas and all of the helpful advice and information!! You are the bomb, lol!
I would water the sawdust in with a water soluble fertilizer to give it extra nitrogen. Maybe let the mix sit a week before using if its a lot of sawdust. And enjoy the cattle panel!

My only additive would be, Alfalfa pellets/cubes, I use fresh ones, as well as have a compost bin full of the Alfalfa waste from making a tea all summer long for watering, or for those that live where Alfalfa hay is baled it works in the tea barrel too, then composted.
Nice addition and use of alfalfa. Please subscribe,

Hi Gary - I already have pretty good soil in my raised beds and my usual spring routine is to mix a similar mixture into the existing soil. This year I'm thinking of just making this and putting it directly on top of the existing soil at a depth of 3-4 inches. Will this help with weed control?
Any weed seeds could grow through it. Mulch would work better.

Hi Gary, I have Miracle-Gro "Garden Soil for Vegetables & Herbs" (the label says with compost added) - Do I need to add peat moss, compost and fertilizer? Thank you so much.
That can be used as is but there isn't much compost in there. We are basically making a better version of that that is more premium. I would add compost and peat to it for containers but for the ground, just use it.

I do. Actually a several older videos. Search Fertilizers. Lots of what does NPK mean etc with specific to percentages.

Have you used the black cow compost? Can't find leaf mold or grow in my area I will have a nice pile next fall from what i made last fall
From $12 to $24... yea that's an insane price increase. Just checked local big box, and my god you are sadly correct.
Yeah they are probably annoyed we were buying and making it better and cheaper than their big bagged stuff.

I have so many questions for you! I’m trying to start my garden in my backyard. I have a large rectangular shaped plot of soil that is pretty moist most of the year (I live in BC Canada). I want to grow a mix of flowers, veggies, and herbs but I don’t know where to start! I work at a barn so I can get manure for fertilizer easily but I’m worried it won’t be good to put in? I’ve began weeding, most of the weeds are just patches of grass where as last year there was a lot of horse tail and what not. I’m planning on renting a roter tiller and using that once it’s all weeded and clean but I want to add some soil. I’m just so overwhelmed will all the information! You don’t have to answer this! Just sharing my scrambled thoughts.
I would keep it simple. I have lots of videos on building raised beds, metal beds, or just plan earth beds. If your manure is aged passed a year you can use it. I would just turn you soil with a shovel, weeds and all. Drop compost across the top. Let all sit a couple weeks, then break up the clumps and just plant. It's a great start. Weeding will be ongoing. Just pull them as they appear. You can make a mix like this and put it across the top too.

Gary, I’d be interested in your thoughts and feedback on the product PiitMoss. As an alternative to peat or coco. And does AgroThrive clog up the holes of your watering can? I always have that problem with diluted fish emulsion.
No Agrothrive is very well processed and it good to go.

Pittmoss is shredded paper. I have tested it. I was a big fan as it decomposes way to quickly. Peat and core stay intact and it allows you to use the same mix for several years. Just add fert.
Consider coir as a peat moss substitute.
My recipe last year was 3cf peat, 2 reg bags of aged sheep compost, 4 bags of cheap as I could find top soil or garden soil can't remember what it was called. Are those ratios ok? My grapes did well in a 20 gal grow bag but melons and cukes did not but I think it was my watering during those heat waves?
Yeah thats a good mix.

As for direct mulch in paths yes. If it is big chunks, you dont want that to get into the beds top several inches of soil. Just keep it on the surface.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks for the quick response Gary!! Would it be okay to put at the bottom of a raised planter box?
At what point do you recommend hydrating the mixture? It seems like adding water to the peat moss before mixing it the soil and compost would be the best time but that's not what I see in your videos. If I wait until the mix is complete, I fear that the amendments will be washed out of the mix. Help!
Before mixing the peat is best so you have less dust.

Can I use mulch that I got for free from chip drop instead of bagged hardwood mulch? If so will that Rob nitrogen from the plants as the wood decomposes?
This bagged stuff is older and finely shredded. Chip drop most likely is to fresh and bigger chunks, so no. It would rob nitrogen. The stuff I show in videos is safer cause of the shreds.

Bagged soil + Peat (or similar) makes a fine potting mix,

Can you still use your receipt for garden soil or is there a different receipt for seedlings
You also need to be careful about fungi in a product that composted outside. The seedlings might succumb to damp off. It would be better for it to be sterile to get the seedlings going. They don’t need a lot of food to start off.
Can I use compost in place of leaf grow?

what is the PH of this mix? I thought Sphagnam peat moss had a really low PH ~4?
I dont know but it's not that low. I have never had issues. I feel like it's like 5.5 or so. But you can add garden lime if you are worried.

how many bags of bought soil would be equal to your DIY pile?
This was 8 cubic feet all together I think. So check the bagged product amount and divide out.
What’s everyone’s thoughts on Mel’s Mix? 1/3 vermiculite 1/3 peat moss 1/3 compost?
I saw that recipe and once I priced out the vermiculite it was a no can do for me.
Not only has vermiculite gone way up in price, but you may have a hard time finding the extra/super coarse grade vermiculite that works best in Mel's mix. The mix itself does work great as long as you're not growing acid loving perennials in it. In my experience it's near impossible to lower soil PH if you have a lot of vermiculite mixed in.
@@keyphabenyisrael3219 Oh good point about the pH.
Too weak for supporting plants in my opinion. And it is expensive vermiculite wise.

I'm gonna guess corporations reaping record profits under the guise of inflation has something to do with it.
I actually think it is possible that many people are prepping now and maybe more are buying peat moss and manure as a result, but that is just a theory.
Ny doesn’t have leaf mound unfortunately 😢
Maybe something organic compost wise that can be swapped.

Your prices are way off...the Leafgro alone costs $ 24.40 for 1.5 cubic ft. not counting the peatmoss, and the other two bags you mention.
Not in his area. It's made somewhat locally near him in Maryland. The Mill of Bel Aire sells 1.5 cu ft for $5.25 a bag. Merrifield Garden Center advertises 1.5 cu ft online for $6.99 a bag. Patuxant Nursery advertises 1.5 cu ft online for $6.25 a bag. It's also offered for $33+ a cubic yard at other places. Google it. If someone is charging more for a 1.5 cu ft bag, it's price gauging.
They arent way off as I just paid exactly what I stated. Maryland Home Depot. Peat moss cost $24 Leaf Grow $5.99 Hardwood Mulch $3.98
Please somebody please make an announcement to not use DYED mulch. You want natural mulch Not DYED. The dyed has known carcinogens
"look for the MSC Certification Logo on the packaging. MSC stands for Mulch and Soil Council, whose responsibility is to certify that a mulch or soil product is free of CCA-treated wood."
Yea I would use dyed stuff.

It's so difficult to find decent soil nowdays, every bag of soil and potting mix sold at the stores is full of wood chips.

Please do not use peat moss. It's a precious resource and better serves the planet leaving it in place. Consider using coir as a sustainable replacement.
Coir is really not sustainable and high energy input. Canadian peat is managed well. If you can make compost that is the best solution but not everyone can.

What if we want to make it for free? What if we arnt as rich as you and need to save money?!
