- This is part of a Palo ceremony for Má Lango, also known as Yemaja, at a beach in Santiago de Cuba. She is the goddess of water and fertility and is also known as the Virgin of Regla, the patroness of Havana harbor.
Palo is rooted in the Congo basin of central Africa, from where large numbers of African slaves were brought to Cuba. The main principles of Palo are the reverence of the spirits of the ancestors and the belief in natural power of the earth.
