Oh wow, this was Sia's early days, long before she started covering her face with the wig. Sia and Florence Welch are far and away my favorite female artists. Their voices, visuals, and stage presence are out of this world!
My favorite version of this song is when Sia sang it on KCRW in 2007 (which is also here on UA-cam). She gave the song so much of her heart in that session , and the very end where she wails out showcased her voice so well ! You could really tell she was reliving the emotions that caused her to write the song in the first place.
I was introduced to this song (and Sia) during the series finale of Six Feet Under. This song perfectly captures the heartbreak and sadness of that final episode and will forever be tied to that show for me. My wife loves Sia and still can't listen to this song all these years later.
Best final TV scene and maybe the best 6 minutes of TV ever. Cried my way right through it, plus two hours crying and pondering after, and her song has a lot to do with it. My first conscious hearing of Sia ever (I later found out that she did the vocals on Somersault by Zero 7).
I like how she ended the show with a song asking “Be my friend…”, saying “I hurt myself today.” “Hold me”, “Wrap me up”, “I am small… and needy”. It was a master stroke of vulnerability in my opinion.
Sia has a super bubbly, friendly, quirky and magnetic personality... and all her best songs are about alcoholism, drug addiction and suicidal tendencies
I swear I am not being “that” person when I say this. I somehow discovered Sia in 2007 on UA-cam. I was absolutely blown away by what I saw. I created a playlist of anything and everything I could find from her and listened to it often. Didn’t really hear about her much then or for years. Then all the sudden (to me) there was this explosion of popularity, well deserved, and the surprising addition of concealing her face and everything. But this song just reminds me of when I first heard her. Her voice just moved me SOOO much.
I just found Sia less than 2 yrs ago and my mind is blown. Yes, thank you, textures and she's not afraid of ugly sounds is added to my endless list things of why Sia Is Amazing!!! You don't have to react to it, but for yourself watch her sing Many Rivers To Cross live at Shining a Light concert. Less than 20 thousand views... a real hidden jem
The way she sings this song is like an oil painting. With these beautiful layers of texture that when brought together make something absolutely gorgeous. This is by far my favorite Sia song because it reminds me of myself. Sadly it doesn’t remind me of the greatest parts of me. But I have my flaws and I’m okay with that. But I absolutely love hearing Breathe Me live because she changes it up vocally just a bit every time she performs it and it’s like getting a new version every time I hear it sung live.
Sia kills me. As an older rock/metal musician, vocals are a strange thing. For me its about the vocal instrument vs. the Lyrics. I almost never care about the words but how they are emoted and how interesting the " instrument" is used. Sia is an enigma to me, it all matters. Her words and her instrument kill me in the best of ways. Something about her tone and inflections touch me so deeply, I can only describe it as Heavy.
@@tjerkkorving every musician does their best on KEXP and NPR Tiny Desk. I always point listeners to those performances of whoever I want them to listen to.
I've been following Sia's career for around 16 yrs now. Her "Color the Small One" album is still my favorite. She had such a playful side to her but I've seen it deem over the years. Her "Some People have Real Problems" shows her playful side to a tee. Her videos at that time portrayed her wonderfully. Now I still love listening to her voice but I've sadden over all the trama she has gone through and how commerical she has became. She will still be one of my favorite artist, always
I always think of her as her own instrument. Lyrics are great, but I want to ride the wave of her voice and just jam it in my soul. My fav thing is when my brain finally processes the lyric after the millionth listen and I get this fun little ah ha moment.
I think she is in complete control and sung it this way for emotion. Analys some of her other stuff. She is amazing. Her vocals on other tracks are unbelievable. A true vocal artist who adapts... a chamelian. She belts when required. After all, she writes her own songs for her own delivery. As you said, she is she.
This song touches me unlike any other song. I’m not super emotional but this song uncorks my feelings and they pour out. I think I get emotional in a good way. I feel like it’s mostly joy knowing that in her time of need she had a friend who was able to comfort her and be her friend. It could also be sadness that many people don’t have a friend who they can turn to.
breathe me is the song that made me fall in love with her as a kid, randomly ran across the kcrw performance on youtube when i was like 12 and was obsessed ever since… was so happy when she finally broke out into her imperial era in the mid 10’s, she ruled 2014 to 2016. whenever i think of that time i think of sia (chandelier, elastic heart, the greatest, cheap thrills, the coachella performance, etc)
I completely agree - I want the feel of the song first. Then I will pay attention to the lyrics later. Often they add to the feel of the song for me and sometimes they don’t, or even detract. Sia uses her voice as a complex musical instrument and is more evocative than almost any singer I know of. She’s beyond brilliant.
I enjoyed your reaction, thank you for adding education to the enjoyment. Sia is still a down-to-earth Aussie who battles the challenges in her life to bring her gift to the world.
There is an amazing version of this song everyone needs to listen to. Its in the KWRC or KCWR sessions, or something like that. She really goes wild in the end, its such an amazing session.
OMg, you reacted again, to Sia, but to the wrong version :)) I mean this version is so sleek and great but the ones with the high notes and craziness in the end are the gratest, like Breathe me live at KCRW 2007 or 2008!
Feel is king. Great music communicates its central message to you regardless of language or even if there are lyrics in the first place. Amazing lyricism obviously adds to the experience and can elevate the music even higher.
Great diction is what speaking is for. I think singing is primarily to transmit an emotion. It's easy to understand an intended emotion in a song that's not in your native language. Some of the Brazilian and Mexican artists you've featured in the past illustrate this beautifully!
She is nice and I knew her when she was a simple Aussie singer at local bars and clubs. It took me a while to put the sia I knew along with the sia who released chandelier lol. She’s amazing!
Sia’s stripped down version of Chandelier on Saturday Night Live was one of the best lives performances I’ve ever seen. Would love to hear you react to it
you should react to other versions of breathe me live, where at the end sia makes an impressive high note. I must say that sia's voice is one of the most beautiful things I've heard in my life, full of so much feeling and so much love, she is amazing, please keep reacting more to her she is amazing an amazing woman.
The melody in some of Sia's songs (such as "Chandelier" and "Elastic Heart") reminds me of German classic and folk vibes from Schubert's "Die Forelle", "Auf dem wasser zu singen" (closer - by Barbara Bonney performance), but with more tragedy. But this is my view since I listen to classics a lot. This one seems more relaxed, but still have some sadness in it's emotional landscape.
About this song I have one thing to say: Six Feet Under Tv Show, final episode. I cry every single time I hear this. Years ago I went to a Sarah Brightman show and I had no idea she would be singing this piece. Although it was a slightly different take, with the Earth revolving on the panel and all, I cried even harder. Well, it was a Sarah Brightman's show, you know. I was excited. I gotta say, you're reaction videos are always the best and being Brazilian, I love those you make about Ana Carolina and other Brazilian singers. Thank you!!
I heard that song watching "six feet under" and it really shook me up inside! I must admit that she sings it a bit more clearer in the studio version but still she manages here to make you feel something deep inside! loved the end part! I really like lyrics but if I can't have access to them right away I go straight for melodies, sounds and details of a song! thanks for this one too! 🙂
This song is hard to listen to so incredibly deep and depressing but it’s a beautiful song she has so much talent she can sing so soft and low then belt and go very high it’s insane
I hadn't been introduced to Sia until recently and Breathe Me even more recently. But I did follow Six Feet Under almost in real time (as the DVDs were released) years ago and to this day have felt strongly that the finale of this amazing show was the best series closer of all time - by a wide margin. No serious competitors in all these years. So when Breathe Me played behind the final shots of the show it added almost nothing to the emotional wallop of the content (for me, at that time). Now that I'm a Sia fan and this comment section has alerted me to the use of her song in that show and in that way, I'm almost relieved that I knew nothing of Sia at the time. I just now pulled up and watched the SFU final episode on Netflix and have to say that, had I known Breathe Me at the time the way I now do, those last minutes of the show would have destroyed me like nothing else I've ever seen on TV. I think I might have had to take some bereavement time off work... or something. Getting on with normal life the next morning just wouldn't have been an option. That show and Sia's song combined to produce art at the highest level.

I think that for live performances that vocals change it's beautiful!!! fans already know the lyrics so no need to have perfect diction, maybe not for the record itself but live performance is all about feeling the moment... so yeah!! I love the vocals ❤ I mean I love Eddie Vedder too!!
Thank you so much for doing this - she is a wonderful vocalist. Interesting at the end of other live versions of this song she does break into a belted note after the scatting (sp?) - check out her Live in Sydney version for comparison.
Great artist, great song, great reaction. I like songs to be clear, but live shows to be more raw/emotional. I can understand why some people don't like (the use of) her voice, but I love it. And amazed by the amount of great lyrics she has written. Sia breaks my heart and comforts me at the same time.
Please react to her performance of her song "Distractions" Live @ KCRW 2007 as well as her performance of Breathe Me Live @ KCRW 2007 they're both so incredible and her performance of Breathe Me in that one is by far her most emotional one.
THANK YOU!! BUT please, please please Beth! Don't let other years pass and please react to her best performance in my opinion: SOMERSAULT live at KCRW 2008!! SO powerful, so emotional, you'll see another Sia, with different vocal emissions, whith her voice used like an instrument, with high notes and.... you wouldn't belive - with an incredible diction!! The emotion got me in the heart and then I had to seek out the lyrics, which made the emotion more intense. I have listened to this song in many forms thousands of times & it still hurts. The versions with her cry singing at the end are especially poignant. After 1st recording this she made a serious suicide attempt.
Hey Beth, really like watching you dissect voices on your channel. Van Morrison's voice when he was much younger was incredible. Could you possibly take a look at him singing Into The Mystic, back in the day.
When ever Sia come on in the car my wife always asks me why I like her music so much I tell her she probably wrote all your favorite artists songs and she can sing better then them too.
She does that in 3 of them KCRW 2006, 2007, and 2008 But most people like the 2007 one the best. (Me too I guess) but the 2008 version has a really long held note at the end - which is very cool
I'm not a musician or a singer.. But I recognize that Sia does a lot of things that most singers are taught to NOT do. I get the impression she starts with the emotional content, at least of this song, then does what is needed, regardless of what a singer is supposed to. And it works. At least for me. She does things which, when I hear it from other singers, just sounds self-indulgent and annoys me. But from Sia I am emersed in the mood she generates. Lovely. Oh, and I don't mind her diction (or lack of it) in this song. I just get the emotion and the word-noise communicates even if its not clear.
I think perfect diction is for speaking (and Gilbert and Sullivan!) Singing is better suited for conveying an emotion, even when it's not in your native language. several of the French, Brazilian and Mexican artists you've introduced me to have demonstrated this beautifully! And Dimash. He's really his own thing!
Where is the final vocal refrain?? This is the only performance of this song where the silent pause isn't followed by a transcendent VOCAL GUT PUNCH! that tears any house down that collapses to the marimba and cello scat. You've been robbed of an emotional HBOMB!
You should go back to some more of her 90s stuff (like this one.) At some point she decided to go modern plastic style, but in the 90s she was incredibly organic. Check out "The Church of What's Happening Now" for an incredible example.
I can't begrudge her becoming "pop" we all need to earn a living and in the end it allows a lot more people to be exposed to her earlier far more interesting work! At least with her pop she still retained some of her quirkiness and it was more interesting than most of the guff out there.

Took me a minute to warm up to it. I'm used to her 'bigger' sound. First half was kinda Billie Eilish... ish. Still not my favorite style. But me already being familiar with Sia, and me watching your "What Makes X Great" video on Billie Eilish a while back, at least helps me see and appreciate this as a stylistic choice. (I'm growing musically!!!!!🎉) I was going to ask when she stopped hiding her face, but I see from other comments that this is actually an early recording from even before she started the hiding thing. She could almost be Aurora's sister!! I liked her head movements towards the end with the 'Dun Dun Dun's. Reminded me of a conductors baton. 🤔🤔🤔💡 ...Marimba!!! That was cute!😉
Beth could your PLEASE check out “Alison Krauss & Union Station - Ghost In This House (Live)” she’s wearing a black sweater and it’s got around 3 million views. It’s the only song I’ll ever request from you, nearly brings me to tears every time. By far my favorite vocal performance.
Hi there. You really need to react to Tommy Johansson. An amazing zinger from sweden and I would recomment the 1 octave challenge one. I can't wait to hear what you have to say about him :)
Oh wow, this was Sia's early days, long before she started covering her face with the wig. Sia and Florence Welch are far and away my favorite female artists. Their voices, visuals, and stage presence are out of this world!
This song blowing up is what made her retreat and eventually decide to hide her face. Fame for her was "very destabilizing."
My favorite version of this song is when Sia sang it on KCRW in 2007 (which is also here on UA-cam). She gave the song so much of her heart in that session , and the very end where she wails out showcased her voice so well ! Possibly the best way I’ve seen to wrap a tv show. Brings tears all these years after I saw the finale
My favorite song!! I prefer emotion in the song vs lyrics if I had to choose. 100%

How come? Chandelier? Elastic heart? Unstoppable? She is a worldwide superstar since 2014!
In her really old recordings like Little Man, her diction is clearer. She developed this trademark slurry diction over time.
Amo a sia ❤😍
Her best song by far.
Love sia love u ❤️😎👍🇦🇺🏅
You think this is sad? Hear it at the end of the Six Feet Under series finale. It will destroy you. 😭
omg yessss finallyyyy
Where is the final vocal refrain?? This is the only performance of this song where the silent pause isn't followed by a transcendent VOCAL GUT PUNCH! that tears any house down that collapses to the marimba and cello scat. You've been robbed of an emotional HBOMB!

Beautifully accurate description!!
you need to check out sia soon we'll be found on david letterman. Amazing Performance!!
@@mnewm21 Actually she didn't really need to even sing to earn an living. You'd be surprised how many huge selling songs by other artists she wrote.
2:05 😂
I’ve said this so many times
Be cool if you did a couple more sia performances. David Letterman performance is great.

See these two musics to get acquainted with the amazing Iranian
Good video. However, this is not her first time on the channel. You reacted to "SIA Best Live Vocals" and "Sia - Distractions (Live)".
(I'm growing musically!!!!!🎉)
I was going to ask when she stopped hiding her face, but I see from other comments that this is actually an early recording from even before she started the hiding thing. She could almost be Aurora's sister!!
I liked her head movements towards the end with the 'Dun Dun Dun's. Reminded me of a conductors baton.
🤔🤔🤔💡 ...Marimba!!! That was cute!😉
In terms of diction she kinda sounds to me like thom yorke. Both amazing singers
"beautiful pain" with the goat, Eminem. 🖤
♥ I'm sure you'll like this Breathe Me performance of hers even more: ua-cam.com/video/MFtuoHCaNG4/v-deo.html

Beth could your PLEASE check out “Alison Krauss & Union Station - Ghost In This House (Live)” she’s wearing a black sweater and it’s got around 3 million views.
It’s the only song I’ll ever request from you, nearly brings me to tears every time. By far my favorite vocal performance.
anything by Alison (esp. with Union Station) is great.
Hi there. You really need to react to Tommy Johansson. An amazing zinger from sweden and I would recomment the 1 octave challenge one. I can't wait to hear what you have to say about him :)
I can understand the lyrics, but I'm an Aussie
