  • Many readers have asked for more information on how to cover RC models with Stits Lite and using Poly Tak adhesive. So during a recent snow storm I setup the video camera and did this "Talking Hand" How To video to show the process. Part 2 is also coming soon. I had to break into two parts because of a memory issue with my laptop.

I think part of the reason for this type of adhesive is that polyester fabric does not stick to dope as well as silk and other natural fibers do. This is also the reason for the poly product to fill the weave: paint might not stick well without this intermediate coating. This stuff will never sag in our model usage. The harsh chemicals are sure a step backward, it seems to me. There has to be a water based product that is good enough for models. Ahh, the price of progress.

You are correct. Nitrate dope will appear to bond polyester Ceconite to the airframe and itself but the bond is temporary. Nitrate dope develops tiny plastic "rivets" where it seeps through the weave of the Ceconite but it does not actually adhere to the polyester fibers like it does to linen, cotton and silk. Poly-Tak actually adhered to the polyester. Over time the tendrils of the nitrate dope "rivets" break and the bond is lost. I have slid my hand between the Ceconite and the dope of a full size airplane where this has happened so it's not Internet theoretical BS. I re-covered the airplane with 100% STITS products. In response to another comment, MEK is the correct solvent for Poly-Tak. Isopropyl alcohol won't touch it. Don't sniff it, keep it off of your hands, use it in a well ventilated area, wear splash resistant safety glasses. In other words, use the same precautions as for acetone and lacquer thinner which has MEK in it. It's available at paint stores and home improvement stores. It is more work than Monokote. It is more expensive than Monokote. It will last far longer and is much stronger than any plastic film covering. I've been covering flying models with silkspan and fabric since the early 1970s and have covered or repaired several full scale fabric planes including full covering jobs on a Citabria and a Stearman.

Hey Gerry, Im building a 1/3 PUP, what do you use to simulate stitching on top or under the pinking tape?

Hi Daniel. Sorry for late reply. This is the first time I have been here. For my Triplane, I used hair dressing tape, but did not add rib stitching. I can't see the stitiching on the full size so none on the model. I have also used athletic tape, but the adhesive started to come loose after a couple of years. Hair dressing tape or Scale Stits tapes are the best
