I think he is hitching the back of the ball and pulling down to throw no-spin, whereas with heavy spin he is touching more on the bottom of the ball and going forward. It's more apparent when you compare the motion of no-spin chop to his heavy spin chop. It's been a while since I've used long pips so I can't comment on the actual contact, but it's similar to how you vary spin with short pip chopping (though with less pronounced effect)

How you get the no spin chop looking like a fully backspin chop . Do you hit in vertical to the pips and lift the ball upwards?
