As someone who has recently started travelling on the M1 a lot more frequently all of this what you're saying is totally correct. The amount of drivers that drive in lane 2,3 or 4 when they are going 20mph under the speed limit and causing a hazard to people is just ridiculous

If you don't have such a car you are very lucky if you can get above 40 mph on an open NSL road with good sightlines given the roads are so crowded, as there also seems to be a local rule that you are not allowed to stay at home for more than ten minutes. It’s called the fast lane because lane 1 where you have lots of HGVs with lower speed limits, the speed of the traffic can be slower by default. Lane 2 and above, however, generally everyone drives to 70. Does that make sense?

@@TestGearJunkie. While that is true, you should absolutely never be doing less than 70 in lane 3. Either overtake, or don't. But don't sit beside the other vehicle for the next 5 miles and hold everyone up. Congestion causes accidents.

As a HGV drive I will obviously disagree but also agree. When on a dual carriageway and another truck starts to overtake, I drop my limiter down a couple of mph till they go past. There is plenty of K**bs that don't which annoys us too. However when you have a car that keeps slowing down to the point we have to slow down, then we go to overtake because the idiot is finishing their text, and realise that a truck is overtaking them, so speed right up, so we pull back in, for them to do it again 2 miles down the road.

Oh look a hgv driver that actually knows the law. Don't think these HGVs that spend (I had one take 10 mile to overtake another on the M42) realise that they are both are risking getting a driving without due care put up against them.
I'm also absolutely staggerd how many car drivers cannot join from a slip road without causeing disruption to friendly and safe HGV drivers.
They either try to beat you before the end of the slip road. Or if you move over to the 2nd lane to let them join. They will sit at 56mph wanting to go faster. But woant undertake you because 'that's illegal' - its not. Or I don't know. Let go of the go peddle to drop back to let the safe and Curtious hgv driver back into lane 1.
If I have a curtious hgv driver. I drop into lane 1. Scrub off speed to let the HGV get ahead of me. I indicate and move in behind curtious HGV driver in lane 2. So curtious HGV driver can move safely into lane 1. Really really easy but sadly intelligence is lost on the average car driver.

So verdant too, and the wild flowers; to die for! Then, on to North Berwick. Gorgeous little sea-side town. Has this public park and gardens right in the middle, completely open and free. But most unexpectedly, it housed a small aviary with a wonderful menagerie of birds. Then we went down and sat in the seabird centre with a cuppa and a nice bun. Would have done none of it if we just steamed straight up the motorways.

Its amazing how many times I will pass the same car when I never change my speed!

On HGVs, I understand that not all limiters are calibrated to 56. Some are set to 52 or 50 (and some are set higher, whether they should be is a different matter). And then you have HGVs that are 44T to those barely laden with additional weight (due to load types or maybe not carrying any load whatsoever). HGVs deliver our livelihoods (food and goods etc) so restricting them to one lane delaying them is not a good idea. It slows everyone down, and may lead to rejected loads etc.
HGV drivers deliver food, clothes, fuels (and countless other essential and non-essential goods). If one has to overtake another, we as car drivers need to be patient. However, if that HGV being passed doesnt let off the accelerator to make that pass finish quicker.... Well, they are a knob

It wasn't often it happened in the Mondeo but now I'm in the Audi I will have somebody tailgating me constantly on the motorway no matter which lane I'm in. It baffles me. Is it some sort of stigma attached to Audis that makes other drivers react a certain way?

I have found this too. Cruising along, pull into lane 2 or 3 to overtake a lorry (or other...) and they sit up your ass. Or... because you've got an Audi which is capable of going quick, everyone else in a BMW (and other Audi's) automatically thinks you want to engage in some sort of big German car street race shootout, and pulls along side, or sits behind flashing then races past and slows down to goad you. even worse being a young lad, so automatically assumed to be dumb enough to engage in such fun and games alongside a middle aged corporate management type trying to prove his evenly matched bog standard Audi or Beemer is better in his hands.
Another thing about BMW and Audi saloon and estate drivers is they think they are automatically an interceptor themselves and use flashing headlights, alternating indicators and hazard lights to try and get you to move over... Bit difficult mate, I'm beside a group of 3 lorries overtaking and I'm doing 75 already! (because I'm an Audi driver and I can't possibly stop my cruise control at 70🤭😂)
My god both are nice cars, but they turn the drivers into arrogant pr!ck5... Myself included... I could just back off and pull back in behind in lane 1, but I'm too stubborn.

Trucks- The reason for trucks overtaking is it's often a guy from one of the big companies overtaking a one-man band. The guy in the Stobart/Tesco/etc will lead as he's not paying for his fuel while the little man can sneak into his slipstream and save himself a few £££'s

If a truck is taking a while to overtake me in my truck, i lower the cruise control off the limiter.
The no overtaking idea could work if all trucks were limited to the exact same speed (or as close as). Some trucks are limited to 50mph. If the speed difference is only 1 or 2 mph, I won't bother overtaking anyway. A good trick is to wait for the truck your following to get to a hill, if he starts to slow but your still pulling, then that's a great opportunity for a speedy overtake.

  • @PhillipParr
    @PhillipParr 2 місяці тому

I drive an Audi but I'm one of those knobbers that cruises at the speed limit with the cruise control on, feet prepared for action, and always in the leftmost lane that's appropriate. When Audi used to dish out courtesy cars and gave me an A3, I did notice people being much more aggressive in my presence, like they thought I wanted a race. In my experience it's always BMWs that come up quickly from behind, usually those ones that look the business in the front but as it passes you realise it's just a chav in an old 3 door 1 series.
Biggest bug bear is definitely people cruising in the wrong lane. I often drive from family in Kent back to Bedford at around midnight, and the number of people just randomly doing 55 in lane 2 or 3 is really mind boggling.
Have been rear ended on the smart motorway before, in lane 3. Crossed barrier and called police immediately due to the danger and helped them push the car that hit me into a refuge area. They even waited with us for a while until a car burst into flames 100 yards further up the road... needless to day I wasn't recovered for many hours! I can't see the capacity being much more when all lanes are open and the top speed becomes 60, so why bother making them? Would've been better spending the money on improving the junctions that cause the tailbacks in the first place.

I actually kind of enjoy motorway driving. It feels safe, aside from when changing lanes. My mantra for multiple carriageway Road driving is "every lane change is a risk".
Motorway driving is easiest when there are either hardly any vehicles about, or when there are so many vehicles that you just match the speed of the other traffic.
Residential roads on the other hand - there are all kinds of vehicles and people milling about, pulling out of blind junctions, driving too slow, driving too fast, failing to indicate appropriately, birds, cats, dogs, stupidly parked cars... It probably doesn't help matters that I drive a large Iveco Daily, so I need a smidge more space and a lot more distance to speed up or slow down than a Golf does.

    Hoiya from East Suffolk.
I'm an ex HGV driver & biker. Whilst I can understand why an HGV driver wants to keep a vehicle moving, it is very frustrating for others stuck behind them for miles. On one part of the A14 in Northamptonshire, there is actually a timed weight limit ( 7.5 ton ) in lane 2 which unfortunately gets ignored cos of stupidity and/or ignorance.
Talking of the A14 which is a D2 road, I was travelling by taxi for a hospital appointment a few years ago. As we got onto the A14, the driver got straight into the outside lane with not a lot in lane 1.......police car coming from behind with lights on so taxi pulls over, lets police car past then promptly pulls back out into lane 2. I asked the driver why he was in lane 2 when there was no reason to be. His answer ( which must be correct as he's a taxi driver...... ) was that we're in the fast lane! My reply was the lane is actually for overtaking and the only thing thats being overtaken is fresh air.....get over into lane 1, the speed limit of 70 applies to both lanes. He then got pulled up again by me for lane discipline again on the way back because he was not watching the road signs. Ironically, I had not long had part of my left leg removed after being hit on my bike due to someone not paying attention hence the hospital appointment. Suffice to say I had quite a few words with him. Wonder if his name was Richard Cranium......
Gave up driving heavies several years ago now thankfully. Much prefer staying off main roads when I go out on a jaunt nowadays as there's less eejit's and get some pleasant views as well. Less stress too.
Stay safe all and blessed be
    Hagar 🙂

Sir, another great video but can I say with all due respect to the law that the 70 mph speed limit came out in the early 1960’s, that’s SIXTY YEARS AGO, the days of cross ply tyres, drum brakes and leaf springs, the average mid sized car was near its limit in all respects in those days at 70 mph. Of course I don’t have to make the comparison to today’s cars and I know reaction times are always the same regardless of tech but even a modern city car is mechanically safe driven correctly at those speeds.
I think of Germany which I’ve driven through many times in my 33 years of driving and is it not true that they’re all not dying in droves with their unlimited speed motorways?
When arriving back home in the UK I feel for the first period the great distraction on my driving to overly scrutinise my speed and also search the vicinity for speed camera tech after driving in Europe where it’s great to focus solely on safely operating my vehicle and observing others completely.
I do believe and I safely hold a PCV licence for many years that I have a valid point on the 60 year old limit in this country and laws are sometimes wrong or misguided and good ideas we are told to adhere to eventually are changed or scrapped, the prime ministers recent ending of smart motorways for good example which seem frankly dangerous and where people don’t adhere at all to the established rules of motorway use and lane changing as everyones going along topping out just under the camera activation speed in all lanes at the same speed at the same time, and no hard shoulder.
You said yourself, it’s not 1967, it’s 2023, but we still got their ridiculous motorway speed limit... just my opinion here, Thanks.

I drive lane one 90% of the time, UNLESS there is a line of trucks ahead, in which case lane two until I pass them all, since weaving from lane to lane is the riskiest thing…and if done too frequently will get you police attention. I don’t like sustained high speed since it is wasteful, but I make a point of not holding up trucks, so sixty and a bit is my relaxed motorway cruise speed. You don’t HAVE to drive at 70…you save a lot of fuel by dropping back to sixty. Audis and BMWs of course can’t even get down to 70 😂
