      Hikaru can't serve two masters: candidates and streaming. This loss is a painful lesson. Which will he choose?

  • @Aetherius88
    @Aetherius88 2 місяці тому +169

    Didn't expect a 2790 playing in the Candidates to end the game without even moving the queenside knight and rook. Ironically the final position looks like a game against Morphy, who Hikaru often states wasn't that strong by today's standards. So I think it would be really fitting to award Vidit the Morphy Head for this! Maybe you could put out another short clip just awarding him the Morphy Head?

    • @MrSupernova111
      @MrSupernova111 2 місяці тому +39

      Brilliant! Modern players love to downplay players of the past. Its easy when today's players sit on the shoulders of the old masters and then regurgitate whatever their engine analysis comes up with.

    • @JuicersSuck
      @JuicersSuck 2 місяці тому

      If Morphy got in a time machine at the peak of his game and traveled to today, he'd get demolished by modern GMs and that has nothing to do with talent. It's because of the evolution of opening theory. Morphy would get into trouble early on and as you saw with this game, it's hard to play yourself out of a lost position at this level. Morphy's chess strength probably wouldn't be above 2500 due large in part to his opening theory knowledge. That's not to say his talent level is one of the best ever, which most would agree that it is. Now put him up against anyone at Fischer Random (chess 960), that's a different story.

      @@arghodas6254I have been following him for a couple of years and Vidit always does good initially in a tournament. He has reached Worldcup semi finals consecutively for 3 years and always loses due to his nerves. He took a break this time after World cup and worked on his nerves with his mentor on meditation and after he returned, he won Grand swiss. Then he can 2nd in some memorial tournament where hikaru was also playing. Then he was on highest point in World Rapid championship for 2 days and in second last round he lost in a +10 position. If he keeps his nerves on control, he can play as good as any player. Also if you vidit, his personality has changed alot after his break. He is much more confident.

    Well, what was hikaru thinking being a rook down and a knight down? (a1 rook and b1 knight didn't participate at all)

    Tombstones in a graveyard! So shocking to see a game where the queen-side pieces for white stand unused for the whole time with just the hapless bishop coming out into the fray at the end to meet its doom. Paul Morphy's bones are rattling in disapproval!

    This feels like Hikaru just walked into some crazy preparation. Probably not much he could have done.

    Ding’s rise to World Champion is surely proof that it’s better to be lucky than to be good in this life! A stunning demolition of Naka by an on fire Vidit!

    I thought Hikaru knew what to do after bxh7+ and hoping for Qe4 next. This variation will be exciting if Vidit response f5 then Hikaru Bxf5 sac the Bishop. Vidit force to Bxf5 then Hikaru Qh4+ follow up Bg6 pinned Vidit Knight and Queen and force his rook to help defense on his Knight. But Hikaru will have now Nd5 forking Vidit Rook and Bf5.

    Vidit surely did a lot of opening preparation (Bxh3) but he won because of his precision and being ruthless. Such a strong player.
