I so remember this. I have been here since 1989 and it has never been like this ever since. The freeze of 2021 was close to it, but the 1989 was the winner.
I'll have to disagree with you on that, 2021 freeze beats the 1989 freeze. I was 14 years old when this happened in December of 1989, so old enough to remember this event. I don't remember my family or anyone on my block losing power and suffering through cold temperatures like what happened in 2021. The 1989 freeze if memory serves, never went to the teens and single digits in the Houston area like the 2021 freeze. There was also not as much chaos with Ercot and senators skipping town for an early spring break vacation in Cancun. 2021 was just a mess. 1989 was cold, but not like 2021. One thing that appalls me looking back at 1989, is the amount of people on the roads during all that snow and ice in Houston. In recent years, you barely see anyone on the roads when something like this happens in Houston. I wasn't old enough to drive in 1989, but those people had guts.
I was 12 when this went on. I'm a tropical creature who's not made for this stuff, and as a young one, it felt like that cold frigidness was never gonna end, but seeing snow was such a wild and unusual thing. Somewhere is a couple of pics from 12/22 at my grandma's place in Galveston where even there was a good bit of the snowy stuff. Thanks Ch. 2 for keeping this post up where we could see and share it anytime we like. I sent a link to a buddy of mine up in Connecticut and he laughed pfffffffffffff!!!! They don't realize how tough this is when you don't have ANY winter equipment or materials they have for dealing with it. That's OK, though, folks whimper up there every time the temps get over 90. His GF is from Austin area and she gave him heck all summer mwahahahaha.
Me & my friends walked into a Metallica concert. And when we walked out everything was frozen our ice over. And we still drove back home to Victoria TX. Rock On!!! 🎸
There was still road rage but it was nothing like it is now. This was also the tipping point when Houston went from being a great place to live to a decline.
@@RageTVHTX Wish it hadn't happened. Worst 4 days of my life. No power, no water, no cell service, food+fresh water running out. Man, I love the snow and cold, but I def couldn't enjoy it b/c of the blackouts. NO way to get warm.
What a lifetime ago.. smoking in the store.. people not caring about the paint job someone else was walking around in (aka, the skin color). I'm a native, been here since late 60's early 70's, first memories are in the mid 70's... I miss the Houston I grew up in (SE/Eado, but back then, it was just East Houston). Slow down in Houston is what, posted speed limit rather than 20+ over? Around the 3:40 mark, the car with Cali plates.. lol. I do miss those Columbia Blue police cars, though
I grew up in the 80s and 90s, trust me people cared about skin color. Sure racism at that time wasn't what it was in the 1950s and 60s, and not as in your face as today, but it was still there, simmering under the surface. Digital technology from 2007 to present day has let everyone see what's going on.
We lived near the Medical Center when this blizzard occurred. I remember walking to the Safeway on OST to get some things for my ex who was at home cooking, which she did so well, and everything was covered with snow. Those are good memories. I wonder if she remembers those times. Probably not. I'm one of those strange people that doesn't forget people that were so important in my life, little things that made our lives interesting. Unfortunately, most people have just forgotten that I ever existed. What a heartless world it's become
this was right at Christmas time. I was living in Dallas, where the temp hit 0. I think 1983 was worse. In Dallas we had snow on the ground for 2 weeks, almost unheard of for the area.
If they didn't lose power back in 89, it would explain why they're so happy... Most of us today couldn't enjoy the snow b/c of the lack of electricity... No way to get warm.
Odd how the weather forcasters have no accurate record's in ft worth we had 20 days below zero highs only reached the teens I remember because I had to drive in this weather for a living March 1990 we had even more snow up to 14" but we never lost power like this in 2021
I was in high school and stranded with a flat tire, flat spare and keeping warm with my girlfriend until the morning when the sun came up.............I did marry her but not because of any babies made that night! hahahaha!

@John-ct9zs 1989 was 7 degrees vs 13 2021. Clear winner.

Back when you can peacefully ride somewhere without all the road rage
Sooo true

@@quitepossiblyluckyIt was the best first day and a half for me. But alas, it can also fit in the worst. It hit my area harder than Harvey did

February 15, 2021 snow day: electric boogaloo
I was 10 when this happened and it was amazing actually felt like Christmas this particular year that was some good times back then
seems like yesterday..freeways from Clearlake to Downtown were frozen ice but that didn't stop us from going to work
I was almost 2 when the happened. I will never forget this.
I remember i was at UH and my prof , like the lady @2:55 he was from NYC said to us “I moved here to escape this madness “
this is the day I was born :)
I was 7 months. We barely made it but we’re 80s babies
This was my born day too!! ❤️
We have this weather every year here in Dallas.
This cold "snap" went well into February.
And the one to hit the cone in the snowy stuff at 3:36 was revealed to be from California based on California plates shown at 3:38!
February 2021 blizzard check in
Ah the Christmas freeze. Remember it well.

"Spinning their hhh-wheels!"
Broke an all time low to this day 7°!
Funny we just had a blizzard weather this past week in Houston lol
what days in december 1989 was this?
Idk what more weird. A “blizzard” in Houston or my left ear bud only working.
I drove a 4 wheel drive blazer and still skidded on the flat streets. Overpasses were a mess.
Where are all the cowboy hats and pickup trucks? That is Houston, after all. 😂

It wasn’t much snow so… yes
I recall losing power but not like 2021.
It’s back again blizzard

I was born just 7 months prior.
Looks like the highways were even congested back them 😂. So how long have people been complaining about traffic 😂
yet they didnt upgrade the hydto equipment lol
Second
This was nowhere NEAR being anything close to a blizzard 🤣
Yes for houstonistans it was a blizzard
