Finally got one of these hori hori knives, and I don’t know why I didn’t get one sooner! So many uses! I would caution you to be careful while using it, though, it’s easy to think of it as a trowel digging up weeds while using your other hand to pull the weeds you’ve dug up but forget that it has pretty sharp knife edges on each side and you can get cut before you know it.

The hori hori is my #1 garden tool by far. I use it everyday. Mine is by another manufacturer but I've had it for 5 years and there is no rust (stainless steel). Japanese garden tools are well built and very useful.

This knife is great for gardening and diving.
Harvesting seaweed is a easy task with a Hori. !!

I was first motivated to get a hori hori when I had the need to divide really tough clumps of perennials...I just saw through them with the serrated edge. But then once you have the thing you realize how many other uses it has! Gets much more use in my garden than a trowel. And generally allows you to plant small plant starts with less disruption to the soil.

I have a high-carbon steel hori hori that I got from Barebones Living and love it for all the reasons you've outlined...especially getting under those bermuda grass roots. Thanks for a very detailed review of this tool.

Its funny, but I have transplanting trowel from Spear and Jackson that I used a sharpening grinder to grind one side into a single beveled blade. But it comes in very useful being able to just it as a trowel as well as a blade.
I was tempted to make the otherside a mini-saw but haven't found the right tools to do that yet. Also it was a pain trying to sharpen it in the first place as it was very hard! The steel is very thick so a lot to grind in the first place. I almost gave up halfway.

I used the GINZU knife sold on TV in 60s as one of 3 tools to turn my backyard into a paradise. used aluminum sewing scissors to control blackberry bushes with no gloves needed. 3rd tool was a spade. could also use GINZU knife for car repair. too many tools eat your profits n production yields

I just clicked on this video, and I agree the hori-hori is awesome! I just planted 18 pepper transplants this morning using it. but! I have a tool I use even more, that nobody else (okay maybe a few gardeners know of it) knows about! I'd love for you to be able to do a video on it/them!
Seriously, Klein electrical scissors/snips are my most used garden tool ever! They can cut drip line, prune small branches on trees, cut thin metal strapping, cut peppers off plants, harvest heads of lettuce, singe stem the larger suckers off plants, cut burlap, cut plastic tarps, open heat shrunk packages, cut out paper for oragami, trim EYEBROW hair!, (I sometimes clip my nose hair with them too!), cut aluminum cans, cut string, they're so good, they'll cut a quarter in half if you've got the strength! They come with a really nice pouch (which I'd recommend getting with the scissors). If you buy the lineman kit, it comes with a tool that would be perfect for grafting cuts (even though it's made to strip jackets off cable).
It's less than $20 for a pair without the case. They can be found in the electrician's tools in the electrical dept. of HD, or Lowes or probably any hardware store. They're American made, super high quality all steel construction, and as you can read, I can not say enough good things about them!
Amazon link if you want to see, and read the reviews of them.

I want to carry this in an open-carry boot sheath or ankle sheath, nothing complicated, just something on my calf that stays put. Can anyone please link me to such a solution? I am not any kind of sheath expert and I just want an existing answer from someone else who has already figured out how to make/accomplish this, I don't feel like INVENTING this myself, and it seems like I shouldn't have to, but googling it is providing no good answers. Can I use a soccer shin guard somehow and a Velcro strap kit???

    Not bending at all?
Im looking for this exact kinda knife cuz ya many uses
I found a digging stick at times works better than a shovel i laughed while i watched Australian women dig faster with a stick than people with a shovel i had to try it and wow yes perfect
But a stick don't cut roots but i would rather buy quality than give up my stick for garbage
Buy it once and you don't have to buy it again unless you loose it or give it away lol

Machete, hedge shears, shovel, and gardening shade are more important for me. I don't have barren land like you any more. I have grass and weed everywhere. I have worms and wild mushrooms everywhere too because of the organic matter in the soil. Your soil doesn't look good. You need to let everything grow to accumulate more organic matter so that beneficial microorganisms, worms, and beneficial insects, like spiders, can grow.

Their marketing department didn't do themselves a favour giving it a name of "Sensei". it is exactly the same as the dolts who make Japanese style kitchen knives, name them something stupid like "SWORDMASTER" and then miss all the traditional geometry, as long as the Western yuppie buys it, it doesn't matter if it is just a highly polished turd, as for the design it would have been better just with a traditional exposed tang, high carbon steel, and wooden handles, so you could be assured of the strength.

I’m sorry, but as a professional, I find soil knives only useful for the ocd gardener who wants to stay on their knees and is too lazy to use proper soil working tools. If you don’t prep your soil and maintain moisture you can’t pull weeds. But a stirrup hoe will turn weeding into a short task. And if you don’t know proper planting depth, measure your hands one day. My thumb is two inches. Soil knife is overall a useless shortcut. It’s like all the people who love felco pruners, they’re garbage. Get a pair of Okatsune.
