Engaging with people affected by conflict and violence

  • Over the last decade, important progress has been made in setting up more systematic, predictable, and evidence-based two-way communication initiatives to better engage with, and be accountable to, people affected by natural disasters. However, the implications and opportunities around engaging with people in armed conflicts and other situations violence are not as well-known or documented.
To contribute towards filling this gap, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) published a joint discussion paper: "Engaging with people affected by armed conflicts and other situations of violence: Recommendations for humanitarian organizations and donors in the digital era".
The report was published online on 28 March 2018: www.icrc.org/en/document/enga...

While watching this video, I ended up thinking of two things in my nation's history: the hidden radios and secret newspapers during WW2, and how we didn't dare contact anyone who might possibly be (or were definitely) on Utøya during the attack against the summer camp there, for fear of endangering them.

Wow, people knew to not call loved ones on the island? That would've been so hard to have that restraint

This is just unbeliveable we still have to go through such horrors despite of all that technology and wisdom we have...

More technology does not mean more wisdom. The problem is we have too much technology and too little wisdom.

We are so attached to our phones, it's really sad. Back in the day, people talk face to face instead of using Instagram and Facebook. We are so disconnected from people, we need to understand that there are people around us to talk to. Ashamed of this world smh...

Dear Grant. We did indeed commissioned Kurzgasagt to help us to make understand the complexity of communicating and engaging with people in conflict zones. It is also to support our new publication on this topic. Hope you like it.
