A natural pesticide in books is pseudoscorpions, also called book scorpions. They’re little arachnids that hang out in tiny spaces and hunt the kinds of larvae that would damage a book. I don’t think people intentionally put them in their books, but when they were discovered and studied, they were found to be beneficial in that way.
Dude neither did I until finding a recent interview she was given this week while speaking about her atheism. Just her choice of words, the specifics in not only why she's an atheist but also the justice behind becoming one is so accurate to where even I am with religion do I even hope we see more of her again.
6:02 fun fact: in spanish we say "página" for the numbered page and "hoja" (leaf) for a sheet of paper, or as Hank defined it, the physical thing when you wiggle it around. i love the etymology section of each episode and comparing english to my own language lol
Spoken Spanish my whole life and was today years old when I realised there was a difference between hoja and pájina. I’m sure I could have figured it out if asked but it never came up
I can definitely relate to Ceri's answer but I'll raise one of those super refreshing early summer rains. When it's just warm enough that it doesn't really get cold but not warm enough that the rain makes the air all humid. But I do love the feeling of running through a sprinkler/hoses 😁
Every single episdoe of tangents does NOT have enough veiws. This has been great to listen to while i am grooming dogs. Not ro heavy not to boring. You guys are wonderful
Could we get an episode on capsaicin? I've been wanting to ask for a while now but the UA-cam versions have finally given me the place to ask. Thanks for the visual podcasts!
Who knew book milk was a thing? I now believe maybe I was weaned on it. Been a voracious reader my whole life. SciShow Tangents is infotainment at its most awesome
Spoilers? Due to just having watched Kaz Rowe’s video on Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, I have to wonder if that book from the Queen Anne’s Revenge was from the small library that Bonnet kept on Blackbeard’s ship before Blackbeard dumped him (ashore, that is). I don’t remember hearing that Bonnet’s library was dumped with him.
The drinkable book was a thing. The paper was coated with silver and copper nano particles and was presented in a plastic case that acted as a filter cup. The books were meant for distribution to third world countries and other places where clean water was almost nonexistent. It did have shortcomings though and I’m not sure if it still exists.
Wasn't the filter book they were talking about like a book on how to filter water in case of an apocalypse level disaster? Like the whole book was instructions on filtering water but you could use the "leaves" to filter water
If you like the overly sarcastic productions channel, they also have a podcast, which has a running gag of making a time heist movie in which they save the library of Alexandria from being burned. In this running gag, one of their cats knocks out a candle which causes the fire. One of their fans made a trailer of this supposed movie, if you wanna watch it, it’s in UA-cam.
Many, many pirates were not 'pretty heteronormative', they were hella gay. I'm guessing they got STIs in the regular way and then made up the story about catching it second hand from a fleshlight. Because, yeah, I think Hank is right that it would make more sense to take care of that in the normal way. Two bros sharing a fleshlight because they're not gay.
if anyone is interested in the hidden messages in the chemical makeup of books: read The People of the Book! it’s an incredible novel about a Jewish historical text, its centuries of history, and the woman who analyzes it after its discovery in the modern day.
I doubt that it was common for people in the past to lick books. I think that it was very common in the past for people to lick their fingers to turn pages in books.
So, I know that this is only lightly competitive and I'm not coming down on anyone but I think it's interesting that males do better on multiple choice than females. This isn't because they know more of the answers; subjects also have to answer questions without the answers being supplied alongside false ones and males and females are equal in that task. Anyway, while Sam is smashing it using only his instincts, and Ceri (so?) is floundering while using sound reasoning I often think of this. Perhaps though, Sam and Hank (or whoever writes the questions) might just be more similar in their thinking
Thanks Sam for keeping the Hook hands in.
The world deserved to hear it
Indeed. Indeed indeed indeed.
I'm so happy we got to see Ceri's cat do a beeeg stretch in the after-credits!!
Same!
THE BEST tangent, ever. Pirate hook hands and a fleshlight. 😂
Also, can you please do an episode about ships/boats/etc.? (Has that been done?)
can't believe Ed used Stede's books to fix his canons
I LOVE when you have a guest because I miss the four-people-format!

I wasn't ready for the pirates segment, gosh I want to go back to the time before I'm made known of this information omg
Thank you sam for keeping the pirate bit in there! I needed that good laugh

I was so glad I wasn't drinking something when Ceri said that. My monitor would have been covered in it.
I didn't know who Vanessa Zoltan was until today and now I'm obsessed with her LOL she's so fun and cool

I'm 22 minutes in, and what I've learned so far is that you should always wash your fleshlight before giving it to your double-hook-handed friends.
we're the most educational show on UA-cam!
Quotes Hank doesn't want taken out of context: "I just want to get rubbed!"
6:02 fun fact: in spanish we say "página" for the numbered page and "hoja" (leaf) for a sheet of paper, or as Hank defined it, the physical thing when you wiggle it around.

I love that part too! But I guess I'm the weird one for already knowing the the distinction between leafs and pages and that they were not synonymous.
Spoken Spanish my whole life and was today years old when I realised there was a difference between hoja and pájina. I’m sure I could have figured it out if asked but it never came up
In German a sheet of paper is called a Blatt Papier (literally: leaf (of) paper) and a page is a Seite (literally: side).
i’ve been studying spanish for almost five years and i didn’t know this, thanks for being a scishow friend and teaching me something new!
@@kieran163 happy to help!! :)
I totally cried over that book poem! 😭 it’s so beautiful !
17:34 Hank invents the portmanteau “Bilk” as a combination of Book and Milk 😂
Thank you for leaving the pirate bit in 🤣😂
I can definitely relate to Ceri's answer but I'll raise one of those super refreshing early summer rains. When it's just warm enough that it doesn't really get cold but not warm enough that the rain makes the air all humid.
But I do love the feeling of running through a sprinkler/hoses 😁
Sam is my favorite, it's official. Always cracking me up 😂
Sam, I also liked your joke about the hook hands. This was the funniest thing that I've heard in a long time. Thank you for keeping it in.
What I got out of this episode is that by the end of Our Flag Means Death Ed got emotional chlamydia

Oooh! Good one!
Not gonna lie, the pirate fleshlight is the best tangent this show has ever had, hands down 😂
I'm glad the pirate part was left in

Where is the petition to have this replace Ask Me Another on NPR?
OH how I miss that show!
Ceri is right Our Flag Means Death is wonderful. I love media that is both dark and wholesome

You guys are fantastic.
Guess I’ll have to do my own googling to answer my science question… what a hardship! 😂
Wasn't the filter book they were talking about like a book on how to filter water in case of an apocalypse level disaster? Like the whole book was instructions on filtering water but you could use the "leaves" to filter water
Thank you for making my day
Vanessa is hilarious!
thanks for brightening my day!
absolutely cannot relate to the idea of being pleased that it’s still daytime outside at 9:00 pm while i’m trying to wind down for bed
Pirates hooking up lol
Sam YOU are smart!
Ceri! You watched Our Flag Means Death but didn't blink at the mention of BLACK BEARD.
Steve Bonnet and Blackbeard existed!

Book shoots are going to be the new bars to save book stores. You take a shot off a book? You also have to buy it. $40 plz

And remember: that's just a theory. A BOOK THEORY!

Someone needs to re read or watch The Name Of The Rose.

If i put chocolate sauce on the book do i still get the knowledge?
What about taking turns in the barrel?
I doubt that it was common for people in the past to lick books.
I think that it was very common in the past for people to lick their fingers to turn pages in books.
I have licked more than one book.
One of the worst stories I know.... is about pirate porn
The bonus fact took me out
