Enjoy your channel. For what its worth, I used to have to clean lots of Dungeness. If your familiar with Edmonds Marina, you might remember Buds Bait. I used to work there as a kid in the 80's. We had live crabs and sometimes had to clean them. Ripping the back off before killing them you risk losing a grip and getting pinched. We used a screwdriver and pierced the underside just under the bottom flap and twist. More humane if that matters and safer for whoever cleans them. Side note. One time we got a shipment of Live King Crab at Buds. Someone dumped them in the pens with the Dungeness. Dungeness eat King Crab. The next morning all the King Crab were torn apart. Bud lost about a thousand bucks worth. He was not happy.

Great video! Thanks! Crabbing reminds me of trips our grandsons have taken with us. They loved crabbing but mostly they loved eating crab. We'd fix an alfredo sauce and pour it over the crab and noodles topped with fresh grated parmesan. Now that's good eating...

A hint. We cruised the SE in the early 90's on our 49 DeFever. When cleaning crab I killed before cleaning. If you hit the belly just in front of the flap( I used the back side of a 8" crescent) it puts them out of their misery and keeps you from pinching. Also makes halving them easier. Enjoy reliving the SE through your videos.
Yup..never understood why any one would want guts , piss , poop ,ECT in their boil pot. Try steaming your crab for. 7. 5 minutes..steaming will give you a more tender crab and better favor... Cheers from P.O.W... southeast Alaska.

Tim, We did consider it recently when we added the bulbous bow, but decided not to add it. We know of two other boats with them, and both had them damaged when hit by debris. It seemed to help them when entering an anchorage at very slow speed. It allowed them to see the bottom contour about 100' ahead of the boat. The cost is around $10K for the unit, plus installation. If we have been uncertain about an anchorage we have launched the tender to check it out, since the tender has a navigation system and depth sounder in it. Thanks for watching, Jim

Hi, We use the tides and currents built into our TimeZero navigation system. It then shows up right on the computer screen, adjust time to go based on expected currents, and helps us calculate the best time to go. Thanks for watching, Jim

I love dungeness crab too, however.... without boiling them alive &/or 😨ripping their shell off their insides😨... it there a more humane way of killing them first? ... I can see now on a prior comment, someone has recommending a thump in front of the bottom flap, using their 8" crescent. Let us know how it turns out of you give it a try because ahhhh heck, if someday Crab rule the world and they are looking for us... it could be messy! There's gotta be a way, they taste so yummy!
really enjoy your vids, one small question, you mentioned you anchored in 65ft water in one of the bays, what length anchor rode do you have and the scope you normally work too?.... cheers.
Thanks. We have 400' of 1/2" chain. We usually shoot for a 3:1 scope, based on the high tide depth. So in Deep Bay, if it's 65' at low tide, it will be as high as 85' at high tide. If it's not going to be stormy we may just do a 2.5:1 scope. In Alaska, with the depths, and often how close you are to shore, I think a 3:1 is realistic and common. Hope that helps. If it's just a crab or two we cook them in the galley. If it's more, we have a 5 gallon stainless steel pot with a stand with a propane burner in it. They are sold as both crab cookers and turkey cookers. We set it up on the upper deck. It cooks them really fast and keeps all the steam out of the boat. Thanks for watching, Jim
We have 400' of 1/2 chain. I have not run across any boats up here with more. Usually up here your looking for a 3 to 1 scope. Given the depths and closeness to shore, that is usually what you can do. If it's deeper, then a shore tie is in order. Thanks for watching. I’ve recently gotten into my first diesel boat (Doral 360 with twin yanmars from 2011) after owning four other gas engines boats. Do you know any good marine diesel books that I should study to really familiarize myself with diesels and how to maintain them?
Jordan, Instead of relying on some generic diesel engine books, I would look for books, Facebook Groups, UA-cam or other sources specific to your Yanmar's. Yanmar's are great engines and they should be trouble free for you. Compared in gas engines, the best thing for diesels is 1) use them and 2) don't fiddle with them. They should give you years of good service. Sea Venture's engines now have 10,000 hours and 70,000 NM of travel and they are going strong. Thanks for watching. Jim
I’ve watched you and many other boating UA-cam video channels from their beginnings. I’ve noticed some channels have no advertisements and yours has almost a dozen annoying ads. I can see why some of the UA-cam channels have two or three advertisements, because they’re obviously very poor and cannot provide the videos otherwise. Here’s to “Wishing you no winds, and flat seas.” Thanks for a great 3 years, however I’m done.
Sorry Gregory, We have no control over the ads. They are controlled by UA-cam directly, who has recently changed their policies regarding ads. Apparently the number of ads is different for different viewers, channels, demographics, locations, etc. Personally, we watch 100% of UA-cam with no ads. We have a UA-cam Premium Membership, which I think cost $12 per month - then you never see any ads on UA-cam. Wishing you all the best, Jim
Gregory, If possible, could you help me out a little. I just watched todays video in the "Windows Incognito" view, so UA-cam did not know who was watching, and got to see some ads as a result. Several of those banner ads popped up. They were all for Health Insurance In Alaska - must be because they know the computer watching is in Alaska, and there was one Geico Insurance Ad that was about 12 seconds long during the video. What type of ads were you seeing? Were they the full ads that interrupt the video, those annoying banner ads or something else? I am curious so I can learn more. I also went back and checked UA-cam's recent policy change. It took effect on November 22, 2020 - UA-cam now places ads in all videos, if longer than 8 minutes, whether the channel is monetized or not, as they see fit. It was a good experience for me since, as I said, I am not used to seeing any ads. Thanks, Jim

How much rode do you have to anchor is the depths.. we have 300ft of chain just for Florida and the Bahamas
