The "No Kill Honey Bee Vacuum" is a custom built vac for professional honey bee rescue services. This is an investment that will pay for it's self many times over in very short order. Please contact Jon Nelson for pricing and details at bbnelsonapiaries@gmail.com
These vacs are all built by Jon at his shop in Rhode Island. There are no nails used in these custom builds. Total weight of the unit including the hose he includes with the vacuum is just under twenty pounds. Despite how careful I try to be with mine I have given it some pretty serious bumps and it has proven to be incredibly durable.
Much like myself Jon runs a professional honey bee rescue service. He operates under the name B. B. Nelson Apiaries. They service all of southern New England, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. He also runs a honey bee breeding program with the use of northern acclimated varroa resistant stock.

Spoke with John today. Such a nice guy and really informative. I can tell he definitely knows bees and cares a ton. So awesome to mist them to make sure they dont dehydrate and so theyre more comfortable.
Always nice to see a company that takes pride in their work.
Quality is hard to find these days.
It’s a great feeling when I get notified of a new video from The Dirt Rooster
That is beautiful!! The craftsmanship is fantastic. You don't see things made like this anymore. It is a work of art.
Beautiful bit of kit - you can see the quality workmanship put into it.
A very nice unit. Throwback to the days when things were made from metal and wood by the hands of a craftsman. I remember my grandmother having this old top loading washing machine, must have been 50-60 years old. Shit doesn't last like that anymore. In fact I'm pretty sure it's built NOT to last, more money to be had if you need to buy another every 3-5 years.
I've used my original vacuum for 21 years now, banging it up time it's used.
Dropped it once from 12 feet with 10 pounds of bees to asphalt, broke in 7 places.
Bees couldn't get out but there was no more suction till I pumped glue into the breaks and clamped it together.
Awesome Video , what I love about it . ..is your love and caring about Bees . You mention to give the Bees some water.
Hello there DirtRooster. I'd noticed that classy bee vacuum. Thank you for telling us all about it. Enjoy your weekend now and see you soon.
This vac really looks good. Thanks for the info on this . I enjoy all your video’s . You know it is BAD when other people thinks they know what you are thinking better then you . Keep up the great work. THANKS
If you or Mr. Ed says it, I BELIEVE it unless it's something unbelievable! Thanks, Pal and that bis a NICE rig! I believe in cords and have very few battery things here. I don't need a vac at the moment and unless I take leave of my only two remaining brain cells, I won't ever but IF I ever do, that one by Jon is IT! So go get a bacon sammich and Hi to your Sweetie, Pop & Tommy!
It really looks like the quality and craftsmanship is top-end for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Another excellent video! Thanks for sharing the impressive vac so glad it works so well! I luv the caring way you take care ❤️ ❤️ of bees! Stay blessed 🙏 thru 2020...& Forever good buddy!
Looks like the cat wanted to be in the video too lol! 😂 😂
He likes to hang out with me.
Very nice!! That's pretty nice having the vac and the bee cage in the same unit. God bless!!
Very nicely made. Thanks for the video.
you can buff most of those out, the deeper ones lightly sand and restain, even scratched up this thing is beautiful.
Great review on the prettiest bee vac around 👍😊
Thanks for the good information! Keep up the good work, Solomon Honey.
Still the prettiest vac I've ever seen. Great looking wood and stain.
That is a beautiful vac for sure. I use the style that mounts directly to a hive body with frames inside. Makes it easier to reunite the bees to the cutout comb. It sure is heavy though. I have a pretty long hose on mine so it can be kept on the ground. Though my hose has a slick inside to help prevent the issues you mentioned.
Be safe and GOD BLESS you and your family brother Amen 🙏
Thank you for posting this. I’ve been very curious about your “fancy” bee vac!
I would buy one just because it is beautiful. I don’t handle bees in anyway whatsoever!
i don't handle bees either. my suit does though. i dress like a damn astronaut when my gf asks for help with her bees. speaking of an astronaut suit, i wish nasa would make them affordable so i could buy one just to be able to enjoy the built in AC while working the bees
As always thank you for your time and teaching others how to make and keep the bees! I have thought about getting a few hives but I am disabled from my service in the United States Navy.
My mom had several hives of bees. Those things hated me or loved my hair so much they always was ended up in it and I got stung 9 times out of 10. I truly do wish I was able to get a few hives but with my back pain and neck the way they are there is just no way...
NoMerc Mate I've been in a wheelchair for years so I use a top bar hive so I don't have to pick up boxes.
The scars are patina.....the best expression of regard for a gift given to you
A tool with no "patina" has not been used or loved. Just saying. Great video Rooster, i love it!
That is sooo nice. Wow. I wouldt want to scratch it either. How creative
Great review Dirtrooster! Yes, beautiful woodwork worthy of collecting! Might buy an extra just to look at. Great ideas about keeping bees hydrated and fed. Very considerate and life extending. Can't wait to try out your suggestions. Greg Crenshaw Muscle Shoals, AL
Thanks a bunch Greg
Great looking craftsmanship... got to start with good lumber to end up with something that nice... has to work if it’s keeping up with you though.
Those are badges of a life well lived.
Put together better than mine, but it’s well glued n screwed , only difference is I use a clear pvc tube for my hose - no edges for the bees to hit like you mentioned with the corrugated hose 👌love your work cheers 🍻
Good vid, neat vac
Nicely put😀
I'm still waiting to buy the other vac lol need it for places with no power! This vacuum in video looks amazing!
Yeah I don't have the money for those. But I am building a corded bee vac. I am one of those people. I can build it and I will. I am looking for a cordless vac that I can dismantle for parts but I want it cheap. I am a tightwad.
Thank you for sharing as always very nice and would really use it hard
Love your videos, new UA-cam account been watching for about 2 years
Very handsome piece of equipment. Dirt Rooster treats the little ladies well -- even during removals.
(BTW, cats seem to be natural camera hogs.)
Well done. Now I want one and I don't even have bees!
Been waiting for this video
aww the kitty at the end 💕💕😌
If i was a bee i hope i be saved by this guy 😅
That is nice for sure.
Used is its purpose
But still dam good quality built
That man knows his wood working skill
Great work on that looks to good to get dirty. 👍
While that does look like a very nice and well made Bee-Vac, I still think y'all had a better design with your DiY Bucket based vacuums, with those removable replaceable mesh baskets.
Beautiful shop vac! You gave me two ideas (strap for hanging, suction adjustment hole) to modify my own, much uglier bee vac. If I can pass along a tip to you, getting a hose without the ridges will also make the journey into the box smoother, literally.
The main difference between my vacuum and ALL others is the vertical position of the capture box, and a 2 1/2" hose.
Disturbed bees always move up, hanging in cluster to start new comb .When the number of bees is large enough they cover the screened roof of the capture box suffocating most of the bees.
I propolize the roof, back and side walls of the box which allows grip for the bees.
A vertical box with a screen on one entire side let's the air flow as if on the side of a tree or structure.
The exhaust from the vac pumps out propolis fragrance which calms the bees.
@@bbnelsonbeekeepingbees60 What puzzles me with your BeeVac is that you have the inlet on the top rather than the end. I would think the bees would get blasted down to the bottom. Other than that, I think your device is amazing, a piece of art.
Listening to your intro, I never knew you were part French. However, I did know that the bees could use some hydrating while they were in the bee vac box, for me, sometimes up to 6 hours, but I was reluctant to spray them. Now, I'm going to put a spray bottle in the van and dose the girls as soon as I load them up. Great point on that one. God's peace brother.
No Frenchmen here. Straight Irish ☘️. I’ve even sprayed them with Coke before. They took it just fine. After all, who doesn’t like a nice cold Coca Cola?
I think it’d be neat to see a new channel of just you & your Family. Like your meal times at home and just every day stuff we ALL go through regularly........
Your Welcome for the idea‼️🙃
You KNOW you’ve thought about it❗️☺️
Haha! They already get tired enough of me having a camera everywhere we go.
That is awesome
Been on a cutout with him using this beevac, even brought the bees home that night & every word he spoke about it is the truth!!!
Got the video to prove it. :)
I got pre-roll ad for a cordless vacuum on this video.
:D
LOL
That guy knows how to make stuff now.
I thought that on a Video the other day, was How Nice that Vac is
Randy, you have certainly spoiled me for other beewranglers. I love the way you care, as humanely as possible, for the bees. I found some "other guy" doing videos and found him to be rough and CARE-LESS with his bees. . I found myself yelling at my phone (as if he could hear me lol!) you dungshite, you need to go watch Randy and learn how to Care for our lil furry pollinators! Great review on a beautifully handcrafted piece of equipment.
Nice vac! It's like a new motorcycle helmet and that first scratch. lol Hey John, send me one!! lol I'm always a lot happier after I get spritzed. Thanks for the info 125 Dirt Rooster.
Me too. I'll send you a spray bottle. :)
Great video! Seems like you could build your own if you have a small hose vaccum, which I do. Home Depot has a 12 volt shop vac looks like it would work well off your truck accessory plugs if you were away from power.
That wood vac you have is the Cadillac of Bee Vacs. And when you have more money than time, you spend money. However I am one of the ones that has more time than money, so I spend time making the tools I need. Yours is a great design for the box, I will use that idea if I ever start doing Cut Outs, which is more than I plan, too old. Just want a few hives in my yard to play with. But that vac is a work of art. 🙂👍
I used 1/2" clear pine same OD as regular hive body, wrapping the grain around the box, bark out.
Plug 1" vacuum entrance on motor.
Mount half a coupler for a 21/2"hose in the roof of the capture box for a tight fit
Bolt all draw catches through the box, boxes and screen glued and clamped-no nails
Fully hydrate the bees AFTER vacuuming is finished.
I've run my 21 year old model for 8 hours straight in full sun, 4-6 hours is average with no losses of bees.
Better review (what you did) is when you use it on camera before reviewing. You're a smart bubba and I certainly take you at your word. I don't even keep bees!
For MY thinking, your buddy Jeff has the best bee vac design on the net and its ease of bee transfer to a new hive is the safest and easy way of transfer. But to each his own thats a good lookin bee vac you have.
I’ve used both and I can tell you this one is easier.
1,111th! ok, so what? LOL Anyway! Really a well made machine! I’m honestly impressed - the craftsmanship is impeccable!
Not sure if he makes a bigger model or not, but if he makes bigger sizes, he should call them "The Half-Nelson" and "The Full Nelson".
LOL. Yes he should.
I like videos with good information. This is one of them. Having said that I enjoy your videos anyway because I love bees. This year will be my first year as a beekeeper. I have a new homemade top bar hive made by my father-in-law and I'm as excited as can be. I know there's a wild hive nearby as me and my son spent all last summer feeding them sugar water. Here's hoping they find my hive and like to move in.
I hope you have some swarm traps built. If not you've got time.
@@628DirtRooster last year my in-laws who built my hive had two small swarms just move in by themselves. I was hoping for the same but now you mentioned it I'll look into this. Thanks.
@@628DirtRooster btw I'm from across the pond. UK. Our bees wear leg warmers 😉
What was the noise a water bottle makes? Lol. Love your videos. Hit the like and share folks. Lets blow this channel up with numbers.
that's a great vac
Says a man who's used it. :)
@@628DirtRooster they say familiarity breeds contempt.. in this case, contempt because I don't have that one hahahahaha
looks really well made.. box-joint joinery, and some serious care in tolerances. Would you be able to set the thing right next to a hive nuc and just open the cap so they go right into the nuc when they leave the box?
Yes you could, just watch for the queen.
I been making soap lately would love to have soap molds made by him. Only issue is shipping costs
Hehe yea I kinda did, if it wasn't for the thumbnail. I'm overhere in crowley la... keep up that great beezness:)
I look for your sessions thanks from Canada
Was wondering...would a vinyl hose, like a pool suction hose, be easier on the little critters? Smooth on the inside so no ridges or speed bumps for them to bounce off of. Would also keep the vortex centered in the hose. You would lose some flexibility but a short 1' piece by your nozzle could fix that.
Thank you for the care you show them.
They actually fare pretty well in ridged hose as long as you aren’t blasting them through it. Larger diameter gone is better. Smooth bore hoses are heavy and a pain to use on long jobs.
The ridges on the walls of the hose create a cushion of air centering the bees for a smooth ride.
With only 1 1/2" of the of the hose tip being 1 " diameter the bees are sucked in quickly into a 2 1/2 "hose where the rest of the ride is slower and gentle.
There's the reason I can call it a NO-KILL vacuum.
I've never done a cut out, but wouldn't the cold water trick work on a established hive so you can grab the majority of the bees without a vacuum? If they al collect to one big ball, maybe you can cut out the ball, and put them in a bee box.
Looks like a space suitcase
Very nice! I want one, LOL
BUT, I gotta get that Everything Bee Vac first... So frustrating not having power when your out deep in the palmettos with no generator. :) Thanks for this video review...
True.
Have some in my broiler attic. Built one of these to suck them up but it takes forever. Even got stung. Trying to safe there life but they're pissing me off. I'm about to get a larger vac and just suck them up.
I'm curious why vacs are made with vacuum regulator holes instead of power dimmer switches to control suction.
Not all motors can be slowed down without burning up
Hey Randy, how do you deal with over heating the bees on our sweet summer days. Dump ofteninto catch box?
As long as the vacuum is running, I've used it in full sun for 8 hours.
When the motor is turned off you'll need to spritz the bees and place in an airy spot. Give water till they settle completely.
Could you get a clear vacuum tube so we can see the bees coming in the box
Id say thats a great idea but then youd see the bees getting injured...note* no kill....not...no injury!!! Instant regret id think personally.idk maybe its just me
william tomblin he could just get a large tube
@@Piecoook that could in turn do more damage than good...more research is needed...think of yourself going thru something like that...idk give em tiny parachutes..im just kidding lmfao
That is a very nice box. Even did Dovetails which really makes it look hand made and not machined. Also I know you have that trash in the back so you can have product placement in your video. How much did Rigid pay you? :P
have you tried smooth bore hose as it has less turbulence ,?
Come on man, really, tell us what you really think! LOL. Couldn't resist. LOL
It's a secret.
@@628DirtRooster LOL
Hey Rooster 🐓
Where does the Hive store the food for more than one Queen, or do they allow more than one queen. Where is that food held or made? Are their specific bees that are designated to make the food & give it to the queen. I watch several channels on bee’s & video’s are great but I still know nothing on bee’s.
One queen per hive. All food is stored in the combs.
@Madmaxvtx0 If you're talking about what queen larvae are fed, they are fed the same things just in different proportions.
Can I ask what you use for a power supply and a rough estimate of what it consumes for power in watts per hour. Thank you!!
I'm not sure. It's a "bucket head" motor you can get from any large home improvement store. They may have the specs listed.
What about using a smooth hose? Those ridges hit the bees as they travel through. If you can find the right size hose that is like a large water hose, I would bet it would work better. Then you can use a longer hose.
Water would ripple so smooth is best.
The Same rippling acts as a buffer and centers the bees down the hose.
The only high velocity area is one and a half inches at the end of the hose.
How come you use the corrugated hose and not the smooth tubing that fits the Bucket Head Vacuum that can be bought at Home Depot? It is clear and fits tightly in the suck end of the vacuum. That is an incredibly crafted vacuum. The only thing I would like to see added to it is a window or 2 on it! Really no sense on improving on top shelf quality craftsmanship though. Window is really not necessary.
The inlet side of the bucket head is not used. Larger hose reduces kills.
Is that the executive version? That's not big enough some of your cut outs needs 55 gal drum.👍👍😎
Randy, when will you start selling nuc boxes this year and how can I contact you. Looked on your website and didn’t see an address or email

I will have that video out in the next couple of weeks.
@@628DirtRooster That is the review I have been waiting for (the Everything Bee Vac). This vac looks too pretty to throw in the back of my SUV. A plastic bucket vac, no problem.
That first vac is feeling a little less love after this. I'll trade you a dozen roosters for that cat if you think it makes too much noise.
Still loving old Yeller. That cat is a mouse killing machine.
got it was a typo thanks
Good deal
why doesnt he have a website.....?
Not sure. Email him and ask him. :)
Hey buddy, can't find it on Google. We would love to have one, can you drop some contact info sir???
Why not build that top part so that it mates up with a hive box with a base board and sealed entrance? Then at the end of the day, instead of trying to dump bees into a hive box, you unlatch the top motor assembly and just replace it with another box with frames and a roof or feeder cover. No more trying to dump disoriented bees into a hive box in the dark.
Then you lose your catch box and if you do removals back to back you'll need it.
@@628DirtRooster Other than being in better than average condition, what would make it have to be any different than any other box? I guess the key design change I'd see is that the vac hose inlet would be on the top powered section, but would have an elbow that turned down and would go through the screen. That way the box doesn't need any modification, just be able to seal halfway decent to the vac unit and base board.
Well, I guess nevermind. I see that Mr. Ed has a contraption that pretty much does what I was proposing, albeit in a different configuration. 😁
At the end of the day, it's whatever works the best for one's personal preferences.
@@radon360 Yep and Jeff loves his Colorado Vac. I've used one before and don't care much for that design.
