  • A rare (probably unique) recording of the AAA Time radio program from Radio Saipan from August of 1944.
    The featured groups are the AAA Downbeats and the Grenadiers. Both groups presumably assembled from Military personnel.
    This 16" instantaneous transcription disc contains the only known recording from the AAA Time program, as well as the only recordings of these two groups, which contained unknown personnel.
    If anyone has information regarding the artists involved, please contact me. Clearly these musicians were talented enough to have pursued music following the conclusion of the War.
    My (large) assumption is that this program aired on Wed, Aug 16th 1944. This is based on Reimer's reference to rain, and the fact that weather observations on Saipan reported significant rain every day from Sun the 13th through Wed the 16th.

    That was great, especially the AAA Downbeats stuff! Sounds like a great dance band! I'd *love* to hear all the AAA Downbeats selections from this ET in full.

    Hi Guy! I haven’t been around as much lately but I’m here now. And what a treat this video is! Please bear with Me for a minute. I believe in the phenomena of . reincarnation. My connection is with radio broadcasts and Morse code signals particularly from WW11. This video is significant to Me. Thank You. Keep Up Your Especially Great Work.

      Thank you for taking a few minutes to watch. I appreciate it.
      When I started doing these I convinced myself that if I could get 100 people to watch, it would be worth it. There just weren't enough 78rpm videos out there.
      Now there are over 800 subscribers and most videos have over 100 viewers in the first few hours. The whole process has been quite a surprise. Perhaps there will be more people join in after I have been around for a bit longer.
      The 78rpm channel appeared less than a year ago, so I am very pleased and surprised with the attention that it has received.

    Can you release the entire 15 minute recording? Too much important history to not let it be heard. 😊

    This is incredible! Is there any chance of you transferring the whole thing and putting it up somewhere? I'd love to listen to the whole program.

      Me too. I love Duke Ellington's music and I'd like to hear the whole performance of "Don't You Know I Care" as well as the two spirituals.

    This is unrelated but its enamored me since I found your channel.
    What song do you use for your introduction animation? Is it transferred from your own collection and if so, is it archived anywhere online? Thanks!

    I watch your videos since you are active again on youtube, all are really nice made and thank you for sharing it
    And a question: what needle do you use for recording? and do you publicate your transcriptions somewhere? Thanks Z (from Hungary)

      @MarkAtnip  11 місяців тому +2

      Hello! I use a Stanton 500 Gold Cartridge, which allows me to quickly change the needle depending on which size I need. For transcriptions, I start with a 1.5 mil and then compare it to a 1.75mil. Usually for transcriptions, one of those is the best option. I will sometimes try a 1.0 or a 2.0 if I am having trouble getting good sound out of the 1.5 or the 1.75.

    Since Saipan is west of the Mississippi shouldnt the station be called K-xld?

    • @MarkAtnip
      @MarkAtnip  7 місяців тому

      As far as I have been able to tell, all of the US Armed Forces stations in conquered pacific territory were christened with a "W" prefix as opposed to a "K", although some call letters were juggled later.
